Be a bit embarrassing ...

Excellent crowd.
Goes to show that if you create interest and enthusiasm with player signings or make pricing attractive, fans in Sheffield will still support their club.
On the other hand, you can sell your best players, put the prices up in the middle of a recession and plead with fans not to walk away/get npower to give 'em a ring.
(And it's always a good idea for your club to ensure it gets its fair share of opening day home fixtures rather than worrying about who's at home on St Leger Day)

It also helps when Radio Sheffield gives you a full weeks build up , with little mention of ours or other local games , this week they should have made a real fuss about Chesterfield , but the pigs play the investment card ,for the 20th time ,...........................................".. is it today dad"

Quite right, Tamus. RS and The Stir will always build the pigs up. Plus you can bet they had a fair few freebies, 'Quid a Pig' etc. offers in there.

It was always going to be a big crowd as it was wendy's cup final. You don't play teams like Dagenham and Redbridge every week. These games are once in a lifetime for fans of wendy.
The massive following from London would have amazed the s6 cnuts. :nono:

They already embarrassed us in terms of attendances last time they were in League One.

I've always thought that the difference between the pigs and us is that they see their glass as half full with another round on the way, however we see ours as more than half empty and the bar has just closed. They'll always turn out because they believe, rightly or wrongly, that today is the turning point, and that tomorrow they'll be Kings of Europe, where as we believe that today will be the same as yesterday and the day before and the day before... etc, therefore tomorrow will be the same as today and so will the day after and the day after....etc etc so why bother? Miserable set of feckers so we are.. :D

Remind me exactly they averaged more than us. Bring on HMRc to remind us what an excellently well run club/business they are. Your really are a clueless muppet aren't you. We are drawing away at the playoff losers with 10 men and they are scraping a win against a part time team who play infront of sub conference gates and all you can do is laud the bankrupt twats.

They'd rather turn out in League 1 to prove some sort of shit point they're clinging on to about their support. I had a mate text me yesterday saying we couldn't average over 20k in the 3rd division, probably true I said, but they couldn't even do it in the Championship!

Let em do what they want, we don't have to care about them for a year at least.

well said ,a pig once said to me that the difference between them and us is that they know they will be great again and we just think we will

After commenting on them the other day about the HMRC business, a pig asked me why the obsession. I compared it to living in a decent house with a decent standard of living and keeping an eye on the scrubbers who live next door.

Last years figures when we were both in the same division:
Lowest home attendance: Blades: 22,555 Pigs: 18329
Average home attendance: Blades: 25,120 Pigs: 23,179.
Would big league 1 attendances for them be something to do with them not getting outplayed and embarrassed every week?

You have got to be a Pig fan. Almost all your posts attempt to big them up. How about mentioning the fact that we have had bigger crowds than them in the last few seasons when in the same division? Or that we averaged over 30k in the Prem - something they couldn't do during their long stay in the top flight during the 80s & 90s?

yer all forget one thing.................. the pigs are MASSIVE.........division 3 or not :D

only two teams in sheffield to average over 30k in last 35 years ,sheffield united and sheffield united

We only averaged over 30,000 because we hadn't played in the Premier League for 12 years. Lots of people purchased tickets because they knew it was possibly a one off, rare opportunity to see Sheffield United play a Premier League season when we are traditionally a mediocre 2nd tier club.

Wednesday were an established 1st Division/Premier League club during the late 80s and for almost the entirety of the 90s so nobody was in a hurry to buy tickets just to see them play against Man Utd and Liverpool because it was normal for them. They were in the top flight from 1984 to 2000 with the exception of the one season in Division 2 when they were releagted in 1990 (we can only dream of a stay in the top division for this long).

When they were promoted back to Division 1 in 1991 they averaged 29,589 so they weren't far off.

You tell them Hirsty/Carlton/Sgt Wilko.:fishy:

They can only dream about a stay in the Championship for that long now. They are so massive they are like the Queen and dont have to pay taxes.

Yes we did have a 12 year absence, but in 1971-2 season we'd only been absent for 3 seasons, but still averaged over 33,000. And when Wednesday returned to the top flight for the 1984-5 season they had had a 14 year absence, but still didn't top 30,000.

Also, our attendances in the 3 seasons since relegation in 2006-7 season held up very well (only 5,000 down on the premier league season), suggesting that had we managed to stay in the top flight we would have continued to get averages of over 30,000.

Historically, we all know that Wednesday have usually averaged more than us, but the last few seasons have seen a bit of a change. Until 2007-8 season I think we'd only got a bigger average than them once since World War 2 when in the same division as them. But since the commencement of 2007-8 season we've done it 3 times running.

Far too early to be saying it's a long term shift in the balance of our respective support bases, but it is something that hasn't happened before.

As for 'dreaming' about staying in the top flight for as long as they did in the 1980s and 1990s, well we weren't too far behind in the 1960s and 1970s, managing 12 out of 15 seasons.

Thats the reason you need to get the plum games opening match of the season should always bring the biggest crowd of the season with no football for months plus a week of buiding the game up.
The Blades are overdue to have the opener,Boxing day and final game of the season the club shouls be making alot of noise about this loss.

I really dont get this line from anyone, Len and Peter in particular about how wonderful the pigs support is vs. ours in these set of condition or that. They may have had more success than us in living memory (not difficult, tbh), but the inescapable fact is that whatever spin you put on the support or success, they are pigs. We are better than them in every way, we have the best club, we play in the best colours, on the best pitch, in front of the best supporters (even allowing for the really miserable bastards). All statistics are bogus and un-necessary.

I dont normally say this to people moaning about how rubbish we are. Everyone has their frustrations, but seriously, if you think that Wednesday are the better club in any regard, even in a misguided sense of fairness, then you really need to reconsider your allegiences.

*end of discussion*

Are Len and peter season ticket holders? if not were they last year?

More pro-Wednesday drivel from our resident Pig. You are determined to look at everything from whatever angle puts them in a better light - however weak your argument. The fact is we've had better crowds recently. And we averaged over 30k in the Prem despite being relegated - they couldn't manage it even when they qualified for Europe. Enjoy life in League One, porker.

I did suspect there was a porker within the ranks and I'm definitely getting a whiff of bacon in this thread :)
