I’ve seen Richard Keys going on about how there’s a fucking chip in the ball. He doesn’t even know how Hawkeye works. I think the media are partly to blame as well about this 100% correct thing. It’s never been 100% correct but there is a margin for error with it. but of course everyone has lapped all this up.

I can understand why the ref didn't give it. I can even understand why the assistant didn't give it with the defender on that side of the goal possibly obstructing his view. Rightly or wrongly, they expect the technology to be 100% reliable and there have been cases in games when balls have looked like they're over the line but the tech has shown that they weren't quite so they're opening themselves up to ridicule if they award a goal that looks over the line to them but the tech then shows didn't go over, it's just assumed now that the tech is right so they didn't question it. But I'll never understand why the VAR people didn't pull it back and overturn it.

I genuinely don’t think there’s much of a place for them now VAR is in place, certainly they aren’t needed for any big decisions anymore. Maybe for things such as whether the ball is in or out of play to stop really minor things going to VAR but other than that I think we will eventually see games without them.

The ref I assume doesn't, but presumably there's a Hawkeye team or something when it's checked prior to the match who are monitoring it somehow? Say a camera goes down, how soon does somebody know about it? Because it might go someway to making it clear how this happened. If this is just some freak event and the VAR team were just too trusting of the goal tech to properly look at it, then it's a warning for the future. Nothing can make this okay, we've been screwed, but it would at least make people a little less angry if we could understand what happened.

I'm glad that someone actually raised the point about 'occluded cameras'. In the Mark Clattenburg piece in the mail:

As for HawkEye, I find the Premier League explanation bizarre. They say the cameras were 'occluded by the goalkeeper, defender and goalpost'. But they weren't, we could clearly see the ball.

When HawkEye was first introduced we, as referees, were told it was fool-proof and that is saw through everything. We had concerns, for example, if the ball was buried beneath a scrum of players. So this explanation just does not add up, it should have detected the ball's position.

It's one thing to be screwed over, but then to come out and blatantly lie about how and why it happened is a piss take.

The issue is that the match officials had ample opportunity to review the incident. VAR initially the Linesman & the referee (who could have viewed the pitch side monitor) etc ; etc. The problem is spineless officials blaming technology when common sense should have prevented it.

I thought Hawkeye's statement was that the system was working fine but the cameras failed to pick up on the goal. That's what the BBC article said, anyway.
