Wilder Unique Achievement?

Apologies if this has already been done before, maybe I missed it.

Was thinking the other day, there can't be many who have achieved promotions from the 3rd tier to the 1st tier both as a player AND as a manager AND with the same club. I can't think of any but if there are, Wilder must have achieved it in the shortest time (2 seasons as a player and 3 as a manager).

Anyone know of any other examples or even close ones? Anyone want to point me in the direction of the thread this was already covered in?

Eddie Howe did it for Bournemouth getting promoted from L1 to the Championship in 12/13 then getting promoted from the Championship in the 14/15 season. This was after he got Bournemouth promoted from L2 to L2 in the 09/10 season.

Still an amazing achievement for Wilder though.

Dave Bassett achieved back to back promotions for us too in 88/89 and 89/90 (albeit after seeing us relegated in 87/88). Taking us effectively from 2nd to 3rd to 2nd and to the 1st tiers of English football, what a ride.

You're right. But that wasn't what he was asking. He was asking if there were any folk that we were aware of who had done it as a player and a manager with the same club.

I can't think of any - although "John Toshack" and Swansea come to mind. Maybe?

John Toshack's record of 3 promotions in 4 years with Swansea is identical to Wilder's from a managing perspective, though he did it with one club, whereas Wilder came up from the fourth tier with Northampton of course:

1978 promoted from Div 4 (Toshack only in charge for the last 2 months)
1979 promoted from Div 3
1980 12th in Div 2
1981 promoted from Div 2

Swansea then finished 6th in Division 1 (and then were relegated 3 times in 4 years, but that's another story).

Toshack was player manager in all 4 seasons, playing 60 games and scoring 24 goals (mostly in the 3rd tier season, and only 3 games in 1981), so technically he has done what Wilder has done as a player and a manager, but at the same time.

That's some great stats Revolution . I do feel that Wilder's achievement is even more unique, purely because it was at two separate times, rather than being player/manager and it happening on one occasion.

I don't think Keegan ever played 3rd tier for Newcastle, but I think he was instrumental in getting them promoted from 2nd to 1st tier as a player.

I don't he is to straight for that job a bit like Clough he says what he thinks and he is right most of the time but straight talking is not liked in the ivory towers down London.He would be great for the job as Clough would have been but he like Clough would I feel put some noses out of joint.They always go for the safe option of a yes man.
