"SHEFFIELD United manager Kevin Blackwell says the club must focus on "quality rather than quantity" in the transfer market this summer"

I knew he's say it before summers out just like last summer.

The next statement will be "No-one out there better than what we've got" Followed by "Great bunch of lads"

Yadda yadda yadda

the transfer bullshit continues.

Can't help himself. The back-rod factory is in full steam. Soft sod.

Then Nyron appears.......on a loan. £2m in and nowt spent, don't blame Blackwell blame his boss old Kevaneezer McCabe

Is that meant to be a positive?

There aren't many teams these days who don't have at least 1 or 2 long term loans. I don't see why this has to be seen as a negative.

There's a world of difference between this and the 20 short term loan fiasco.

I agree - 2 maximum is fine for me.

Don't know about you but I didn't expect to watch a team containing 3 or 4 loanees next term (and I think Bob is referring to seasn loans), certainly having listened to McCabe and Birch.

Like it or not, I think it will become more and more the norm, particularly in the Chumpionship. Those who are not quite good enough for their current Premiership team are unlikely to want to drop down permanently, neither could teams afford them, so a season long loan is an ideal compromise. Similarly, the top Prem clubs will be sending more and more of their prospects down a level to give them experience.

As you say, 1 or 2 1st teamers is fine although I would have a problem if, for example, bringing Gilbert in from Arsenal knocks the likes of Brown and Lowton down the pecking order. Without checking, I think most of the promoted clubs in the last few years have contained a few long term loanees from the Prem.

If it's 3 will it be shoes off?

Disappointed Blackie's waited until just over two weeks before the start of the season to finally pull that one out.
Very slack.

I doubt whether KB has had any direct involvement since the end of last season.

He's just getting into full swing, warming up. What better way to start than with this?

Trevor and Kev are winding him up, making sure the strings are working properly after flying back from Malta and we'll soon be heading full tilt into excuse season - before we have actually played any games. But never mind, we can stay in the hotel for the cost of fry-up.

Define long term? Season long?

The only one that comes close is Barry Bannan for Blackpool who was there from November till season end, from the 3 teams promoted last season.

I did say without checking !

Maybe last season was a bad example but I remember the likes of Birmingham and WBA making good use of loans in their promotion seasons.

Last season WAS West Brom.

Birmingham started their promotion season against us the season before with NO loan signings in the 16 (we had Halford starting for us).
Wolves had none in their sixteen and Burnely had none against the pigs.

You may be right that they used the loan system well but they didn't start the campaign relying on them.

I think Nosworthy adds that fun factor to the back four so it should be good watching him for a full season (although Sunderland were wanting to sell so might want to off-load to someone in January).

Birmingham had a fair few short term loans, but only one season long loan (which was from AZ Alkmaar)

I assumre you mean WBA in their promotion 3 years ago for the other? But even then they only had one season long loan, and that was from hearts.

Loads of teams use loans to get promoted, but last season we used a mammoth 14 loan signings, which for me is obscene. Of which, none ended up as season long loans because of one recall, and we signed another.
I don't mind loan signings, but over a course of a season, you shouldn't really be making any more than 5 in total. Even then that's a high number for my liking,

I meant the WBA of 2008 when they had the likes of Ishmael Miller and Bednar, and the other one I was thinking of was Brum with Muamba, Bendtner and Larsson. Stoke used a few the year they went up, Shawcross springs to mind.

You can't forget the ever popular, although he has injected a new slant to it.
"The most important criteria we've got to employ when looking at those we're trying to bring in is calibre. They've got to be better than what we've already got or bring something to the table that isn't already on it.
Ya gotta love it.
