My dad and many older fans said Richardson was one our hardest players and I dont think he ever got sent off!

From the 1961-62 photo below (we finished 5th in the 1st division that season), only Shiels, Hodgson, Hoyland, Summers and Russell are still living

Hodgson looks a bit like our current Billy, just me?

Chilling thought SB, your second sentence, but that's life.

I do believe he was the 'asserter' of the team but not in a flamboyant, showy way, more 'a quiet word' or a forceful tackle.
Sad times, a sad day, RIP Brien Richardson, enjoyed watching you play for the Blades.
Anomaly in one of these photos which one?

When you look at those pictures you just think of the history of the club , all the players that have played for us , all the fans that have been in the ground , a bit before my time , all though i do remember the players running out of the John street stand ( i think ) not sure what year they moved the changing rooms to the south stand ? i bet there`s not many Blades left that`s seen him play now , RIP blade !

A part of an iconic half-back line, Richardson, Joe Shaw and Summers, brilliant tackler and never, ever, gave less than 100% commitment. A Sheffield man through and through, the club and the city have lost one of their own.

Thanks for the memories, Brian, R.I.P.

Part of the Blades team when I first started watching the Blades.

A couple of weeks ago I posted that I hoped our current 'back 5' would be remembered as fondly as the one that Brian was part of in the early 1960's.

The best tribute is Brian Richardson would be in a Chris Wilder squad any day of the week.

RIP.

Sad news. One of the names you just expected to be on the team-sheet every game, and who would do his job well, and give everything to the cause. Would have fitted into the Wilder ethos. Not as physical or dominant as Morgan, but shared his approach of 'could dish it out, but could take it as well'. An excellent foil to Joe Shaw's ball-playing centre-half.

RIP Brian only saw you in the twilight of your career as a youngster making his first tentative steps at first team games but remember very little got past you. The team lost a little of its bite in the few years after you stopped playing until a certain Mr Hockey came along.

One of my all time heroes. I would love to see a photo of him when he had Piss in Boots Bremner by the shirt collar. When you talk about hard players he was one of the best but not dirty. Best defence I M H O-- AH, CC, GS, Rock, JS, GS. Worked at same place as my mother, Englehards, and she could see the awe on my face when she first told me. Goodbye and RIP Mr Rock.

Hard as nails that lad. The enforcer of the team in a time when all clubs had an enforcer. He would sort out the ugly side of things and allow the skilful ball players to do their thing. RIP Brian Richardson.

I think he lived in the caretakers house at Hatfield House Lane junior school where i was a pupil around1958/59. R.IP. LAD.

That defence was brilliant. The names just rolled off the tongue and it was virtually the same team every week. Richardson was certainly the hard, strong man, as hard as nails, and a winner. As one or two have remarked Wilder would have loved him. I was only 12 in 1961 but that team is one that really stands out as one of the Blades best. Like this team, they really played for the shirt.

My abiding memory of Richardson was when he had been injured and did not automatically get his place back because of the form of Harry Orr - a young Irish player.
The headline in the local evening paper was, Richardson said "he would fight for his place back".
In a reserve game a few days later a spectator shouted to Richardson, as he retrieved the ball to take a throw-in - "come on then Richardson fight".
Richardson turned round smiled and shook his fist. He was soon back in the first team of course.

1981 ( pretty sure) when the South Stand dressing rooms were first used .

Sad news, a good friend of my Dad's, even though he kept him out of the first team!
I knew his daughter well when I lived in Sheffield.
RIP and condolences to his family.
You may be interested in a few of my pictures from the old scrapbooks. There are not many of him in action (his role was not photogenic), but the first one of him on the pitch with a dislocated elbow at Millmoor, playing on almost to the end, is typical. The second photo shows him 10 days later, just before the 6th round v Wednesday, prepared to go through the pain barrier. The others are all family photos - for some reason, he always seemed to be the one featuring in the build-up to big matches.
