Blades Up Pigs down, what a day that was !!!!

It was the best day of my life, wedding apart if Mrs Treeton is reading this!!

The only thing that irked me that day was Luton didn't let away fans in, so I was facing ending a long run of consequitive games the following season.
Ironically 30 years on, I'm facing the same prospect.

I did get in at Kenilworth rd in the end!

Tried to make up some story about being left some tickets at Lutons ground-nowt to come so sat on a bridge near the ground so I could hear cheers if we scored-which we did Deano.
Then got in the home end with 10 mins to go; bit bizarre.

The date is etched in my memory forever, the best day for me following United, lots of great days following United since 1970/71, but this was my best.

I remember going to Spurs a few weeks before the Luton game and our bus stopped off for a drink in Luton, loads were going up to the ground to join their membership (obviously to get a ticket for our game against them). I'd have done the same, if I hadn't had my leg in a pot at that time.

Was in skeggy on holiday that week, went to the north seafront carpark, could just pick up hallam FM to listen to the match......

Girlfriend weren't right happy, left her in caravan...with her daughter ......

Greatest day ever absolutely bonkers in the away end. I took a friend of mine who always sat on the fence between the blades and that in S6. Never sat on the fence again, his sons a season ticket holder now. (Work purposes stop him from going regularly).

Spent the night in the Turf with red and white tape wrapped round our heads when we got back home. I only know that because I woke up with it still there the next day.

Wednesday faced the possibility of going down IF they lost at home to Forest AND Luton won at Derby. At half-time at Leicester it was announced that Wednesday were 1-0 down at home to Forest. There were no mobile phones in those days. At full-time we were celebrating our promotion but then all went quiet as the announcer went through the division one scores. He announced "Derby 2 Luton 3" to a large cheer, continued going through the results in alphabetical order until he got to "Sheffield Wednesday 0...". We didn't hear Forest's score (3),as there was absolute pandemonium. After playing second diddle in Sheffield since the Boxing Day Massacre, we were top dogs again. United fans were wearing T-shirts saying "The Blades are going up" on the front and "Wednesday here we come" on the back. One bloke with me has covered the latter up with 'CANCELLED'. In his autobiography, Dave Bassett appeared annoyed that a section of our fans had appeared pleased with Wednesday's relegation. The section being around 95% if I recall correctly.

Being from Wimbledon and Landarn lad, it is hardly surprising that Bassett didn't have the same level of dislike that the vast majority of us had (and still have) for the blue n white shite. I suppose he may understand a little bit more now, but I don't think he really understands the rivalry here in Sheffield even now. I come from a family of Blades, grew up in the city before I left Sheffield to live down south and overseas through work, and had and still have a mixture of Blades / Owls mates. I love em all, but I despise the Piggies football club with a passion. Leicester was the dream day. Even the weather was glorious.

I was just telling my better half, who is from Lytham, of the day. She’s been to a few games now, her first being the Man Utd game and she absolutely loves it. Proper hooked.

I was telling her how we’d been behind Wednesday for a decade and basically just told her the same story as yourself. Unbelievably I told her of a guy that had climbed the railing who had wrote “CANCELLED” across his T shirt. Then 2 minutes later read your comments of the day.

it was a great moment and thank you for confirming it as drink and time had actually got my asking myself whether it actually happened!
