Coming back from Hillsborough there was traffic everywhere and we were surrounded by Wednesday fans and Chris is hanging out the window and saying to the Wednesday fans 'Hiya mate, what was the score, do you know?' I thought Jamie had a falling out with Bassett, sure he said he'd cross over the street if he saw Dave walking towards him.
He certainly celebrated scoring against us for Burnley in this game in 94.

He did. A huge falling out which started when he played well at centre half and Bassett wanted him to continue playing there.

Maybe Bassett had a point then, as Jamie H was like the invisible man in midfield for us. Surpassed only by Paul the Ghost Thirlwell in never really being seen on the pitch at the Lane.

I do recall JH having a decent game v Man City one time at the Lane v Man City in the early 90s though (think he might scored a couple for us that day). Only time I was ever remotely impressed with him in our midfield. His old man Tommy was probably a much better player for us

I was going to say something similar. I never liked Hoyland as a player - I just thought he was very ineffective. I wasn't excited when we signed him and I was even less excited after seeing him play. I never saw his fatha play, but I remember him being landlord of the Sheldon pub. A place that I used to frequent before games, back in the day.

I agree. He looked like he had the makings of a cultured centre half. He saw himself as a CM though. No one else did.

I can’t believe he wouldn’t make the switch, if I was in the position of playing professional football, let alone playing for the club I supported, I wouldn’t have even questioned the decision to switch positions.

Bash too. I get why some centre-backs probably prefer to be in midfield, but it always seems odd that there’s a reluctance to settle there if the player performs better. I think despite Jagielka’s career he still says that midfield is his favourite position.

Are you confusing him with Mike Lake for the good game?

Yep you’re correct, he’d certainly suit our current system more than the traditional Bassett flat 4.

Aye, my Dad always said he looked the part as a sweeper.
