Europa League?

Sporting merit doesn't mean points per game unfortunately. It means UEFA coefficients. If they get their way we will miss out
 
Can't say I am excited about playing Braga in empty grounds. Would just be a money grab. And Europa League doesn't have much of that

Agreed.

The whole ethos behind "We're going abroad" is that a select few lucky Blades will finally get to travel to see us play in European competition on foreign soil. If travel bans are still in place, which is highly likely, we'd basically be watching us play the likes of BATE and Ludogorets on telly with tumbleweeds blowing through the stands.

That sounds shit.

I read that as UEFA coefficients would not come into it, as it clearly states domestic competitions - English League and Cups.

No FA Cup would mean Europa League is places 5th and 6th, and 7th as well as City won the League Cup.

No Man City in Europe next season would have 5th place as Champions League, with the Europa League places being 6th, 7th & 8th.

That's how I understand it anyway.
 
Well according to latest reports United would get the automatic qualifying spot over wolves.

That does read that way. I read different yesterday, but I can't remember where. Hope yours is right

Surely it has it be on the domestic league merits, because you could theoretically have a scenario for instance where all the clubs in a particular league currently sit in a Euro position that have never played in Europe previously and then what? That would just no be fair to hand qualification to all lower positioned clubs just because they qualified for Europe in previous seasons

You probably read that article in The Sun that basically said UEFA will be stating that qualification should be based on “sporting merit“ not coefficients (that the Spanish FA seem to be pushing)

That has now happened so it’s as clear as day that we should be rewarded with at least 6th place if matches can’t be played (based on points per game).

If the FA don’t do that, UEFA have said they can overrule them.

It will be disappointing if we don’t get to finish the season and aim for the Champions League. But still infinitely better than the season simply being voided as some people keep campaigning for (including some Blades fans).

Those who are saying we won’t get to travel into Europe for any matches seem to be assuming that we will get knocked out in the early stages. Why?

With Wilder and the current team, I would be confident of us still being in the competition in 2021. Hopefully the restrictions on travel and fans attending matches will have been eased by then?

If not I will settle for watching them play in Europe for the first time ever. I didn’t think it would even happen in my lifetime anyway.

Since it kicked off in march they said no vaccine for at least 12 to 18 months. That takes us into march 2021 at best.

According to Talksport, regarding UEFA's "strong recommendation" of how it would look if a sporting merit points, per game system was implemented, means we would lose out by the slimmest of margins for a Champions League spot to Man Utd, that is assuming Man City are banned.

'UEFA's decision would see Manchester United and Sheffield United take the Europa League places, while Arsenal and Tottenham would miss out on European football entirely if the current Premier League season is unable to be completed.

As it stands, the two north London sides sit eighth and ninth respectively in the top-flight table, but they would be flipped around on a points-per-game measure, with Arsenal having played one less game.

That means the Gunners, on UEFA's potential plan, would leapfrog Spurs and finish above them for the first time in four years.

Above them, meanwhile, the decision would be excellent news for Sheffield United amid their stunning first season back in the top flight.

They are below Wolves in the current Premier League standings, but having played a game less their points-per-game tally is slightly better, meaning they would move up to sixth and therefore secure a place in next season's Europa League.'

That's the problem, football and sport in general can't work with indefinite timescales and hope. It will get to the point where football will just be played anyway and I can't see that being more than a matter of months away.
 



If the league is concluded in line with what Europe want then would relegation and promotion still happen? As under this system Villa would be relegated as they won't reach 2 points. That is completely unfair on Villa who would be relegated despite not being able to play their game in hand which could have saved them. The only fair way to conclude the league is to complete it. However if this league is still going on but the Europa league has started then this is probably the only fair way to pick the the teams for the Europa league. Personally I would just extend everything to conclude it all. Then decide how to get it back on track after that.
