County cup match v Rotherham away was my first ever match taken by my Dad. I was just 4 years old in 1957 and don't remember much about the match really but all I knew was that I was now a fully-fledged Blades supporter for life. I was so proud that I had been to a real match and couldn't wait to go to another.

Its a bit like that now isn't it - can't wait for this nightmare to end so we can get back to normality and enjoy that Blades experience home and away .

Recently acquired Joe Mercer's Medal in respect of the 1956/57 County Cup Final between Rotherham United & SUFC on 6 May 1957 a copy of the medals & front page of the programme as shown.

United won 3-1 with goals from Hagan, Hawksworth & Howitt with an attendance of 9500.

Not always the most exciting Cup competition, but a 4-1 win at S6 provided a good finale to the 58-59 season. A crowd of over 18000, and Pat Laverty scored 2 goals - the only goals of his undistinguished time at the Lane. I was convinced that day that he was going to be a good player.

Been to a few County Cup games. Anyone remember beating Barnsley 9-0 at The Lane. John Tudor scored a tenth but got disallowed. Cannot Rember the year and hope someone else remembers the exact details .

I like the programme cover (of course I do, it centres on a goalkeeper). Do you know if it was based on a real keeper? It doesn't look right for Hodgy. On the sad day when Peter Bonetti's death has been announced, it prompts me to ask if you think it was based on him? I remember at the time thinking the picture reminded me of Bonetti and his way of moving. Trivial point on a sad day; at his best, he was an amazing keeper whose agility made standing behind the goal worth every penny of the cost of admission.

Yes and one of the best things about it was that teams always used their first team players! I Remember the 9-0 win over Barnsley at the Lane “we want 10 chant”

Germany has a good system like this, where all the regional cups act as qualifiers for their FA Cup proper and the majority are played out across one long day on national TV
