Mings/Keane vs O’Connell

Keane is nothing short of average - Burnley had Evertons pants down at £25m.

Mings - Eddie Howe didn't seem to think he was good enough so again B'moth had Villas pants down at £20 + £5m add ons. Same might apply about Mousset and Howe - did he see something that meant Mousset was never a regular at B'mouth.

JOC - has done nowt wrong - looks rock solid. Only question for me is pace - he'll never be Des Walker pace but appears to read the game well.

JOC is way better than the other two.

Personally I expect a bid in the summer for a few of our players - Spurs are rumoured to be interested and may test our resolve by doubling his wages.

UTB

PS: ..................but apparently JOC isn't good enough to get in the pigs team

Sorry mate. But did you just infer that JOC is short of pace? 🤣

That's fair enough, but can you name 4 English CB's that are currently better than JOC?

Maguire, Coady, Gomez, Walker, Dunk, Mings and Stones are all ahead of him I’d imagine. I’d say the first four are probably better than him currently.

Basham has also been better than JOC this year. It’s a very high bar and he’s still done well, but JOC has been our third best centre back so far. Appreciate Egan isn’t English.

I don't think it’s crazy to be talking about him for england, I just think he’s benefiting from a fairly poor selection of English centre halves at the moment.

Surely anyone can see that players get the benefit of the doubt if they're at bigger clubs. Take Stones as an example, there's been 5 or 6 English CBs that have outperformed him at club level for the last 2 years (week in, week out), but he still gets the nod for England (even though he's lucky to warm the bench at City).

Can anyone say that he'd be in the running if he performed like he has, but for Norwich?

I wouldn't even say he's pulled up any trees in an England shirt either......

Walker - Kyle walker is a better Centre half than JOC.

Seriously?!

Gomez is decent, but he couldn't get a sniff of a match for the first few months this season.

Walker is going to get the nod, whatever we think.

I think JOC is good don’t get me wrong, but I don’t teally see what all the hype is about. Egan is comfortably our best defender.

As a centre half...in a back 4....

Don't think so somehow.

Didn’t England play the Euros with a back three and Walker at centre half?

I’ll be honest I don’t watch England unless it’s a major tournament, but I highly doubt JOC has a chance of starting in a two next to Maguire.

Soon find out I guess.

Yep, was an experiment and it wasnt a good one. Caused a couple of goals. Hes not positionally good enough to play there, hence why hes not played there since.

I meant the World Cup sorry, not Euros. And we made the semis at least. But I accept we only played three decent teams (Belgium twice and Croatia) and lost all three.

I still enjoyed it more than watching Suarez and Cavani rip Jags and Cahill a new one in 2014.

For me, it's not so much JOC getting overlooked again as it is the baffling choices picked ahead of him. Other than reputation for his big potential, I can't for the life of me see what Mings has done this season to warrant selection.

What I suspect is that by picking the big names England managers protect themselves from getting sacked for a while longer because it gives them the get out excuse of "Well, those are the best names around, what can I do about it?". It'd take a really brave character to pick a different team to what most fans and the papers expect and if it went tits up the way England always do then the manager would be gone.

If you went on current form then you'd have to look at players like Coady, JOC, or even Basham. But can you imagine an England manager picking Bash? If he didn't play phenomenally well you'd be ridiculed for it, however much sense it might make.
And that "brave character" would be our Chris if the FA ever have the good sense to utilise his genius. Not yet mind😉 And it won't happen until the policy of employing "Yes men" is consigned to antiquity.

Think he'd re kindle alot of lost interest in our national side.

I may be wrong but he has never quantified his "picked on form" comments and they could quite as easily mean England form as much as club form.
Guys who never get selected for England will never show any form, it's alright a Man City reserve looking good against Tajikistan, Central African Republic or The Marshall Islands (yes i watch Pointless) but when they come up against Russia or Portugal their failings are obvious.

I agree totally 👍

I think it's part of the problem though. Nobody good enough to do the England job would either want or be picked for the England job. It's what you do when you're in between clubs for a tournament or two. That and I don't think international football is that good any more. The Champions League is better quality as a competition.

If Mings was managed by Wilder, he’d be an obvious England pick. He’s conducting a disaster at Villa.

Athleticio 2nd goal at Liverpool shows very clearly why Gomez isn’t all that.

I don't think Mings is a good player with the ball at his feet, or one on one, he's an alright defender, tall and athletic for getting to balls and clearing them when part of a defence, but said clearances aren't always that great, he often concedes throw ins and corners when it's not necessary.

If he played in our defence he'd be alright but I don't think I'd trust him. Sort of like CCV.
