The thing is though, you’re not analysing the situation to try and work out why Lundstram isn’t signing, you’re just constructing an argument as to why you think he should stay.
I’m a Blade, so if he asked me what to do, I’d say ‘sign a new contract with us’ but he’s not asking me so I’m looking at reasons why he hasn’t.

From Lunnys personal perspective you'd think it would go like this. I've finally made it to where I want to be. It's been achieved through a combination of my hard work and CWAKs patience and development. It's my home now, my mates are here. It's s club on the up, a club looking to the future.... Where do I sign?!!

Realistically are any of the top 6 gonna come in for him? That's a no. Will Everton, Newcastle, Southampton, Burnley et Al? Possibly but won't be a guaranteed starter.
In all honesty the lad could quite easily end up back in the Championship. A dip in form after that and he's sat on the bench in the Championship.

Let’s imagine Lunny is currently on £10K a week and we are offering him £20K plus appearance/ goals bonuses.....and Wilder thinks of him as a back up player.

His agent will be telling him that based on the recent 2 months where he performed really well....then £50K is more realistic when he’s out of contract.
He also might advise that the appearance bonuses mean nothing because he might be down the pecking order next year.

The big issue with Lunny is that no one seems to know his standard.
Last year he wasn’t even average Championship standard....this years he’s had 2 months when he’s been great.....looking a potential star at PL level.

Another factor to consider is that (like Duffy) I doubt Lundstram will have made much money in the game....so can you blame him if he wants to cash in.

You're absolutely spot on.

For me it was about earning as much as I could to feed the family, pay the mortgage, do the best for the kids that I could, have an annual holiday and watch the footy.

By the time I got to 48 the kids had left school, I hated the job, I hated living in Maidenhead and my priorities changed.

I chucked in my job, sold up and moved to Yorkshire with enough cash to buy a nice but much smaller house and started looking for a job when I got here.

Because I had no mortgage I could afford to get a job on the post paying about 20% of my previous earnings, but I absolutely loved it and did it for 12 yrs until an ankle fusion meant I was unable to carry on, at which point I retired thanks to the pensions from my previous life.

I now have a better life than I could ever have dreamed of as a council estate kid but the key to it was maximising my income potential at a young age and then having the scope to make lifestyle decisions in later life.

Lundstram would be daft to sign a contract with us IF he can earn substantially more elsewhere, whether he would play there or not because let's face it, he's not exactly guaranteed a place in our team at the moment.

All this talk about playing games is sentimental bollocks, like every footballer he needs to maximise his earnings whilst he can.

It's a short career, it could end tomorrow, and memories and medals don't pay the bills.

Other clubs pay people to assess people’s ability and they’re usually better at doing it than us. For established clubs, paying £50k a week isn’t a big deal and even if we exercise his extension (which we will) he’s still only got a year left so will go for a relatively small fee. There could be clubs who are prepared to gamble that amount of money in the hope that they’ll get the Lundstram we saw early in the season.

But his career could end with injury at any time and as it stands not only will he have achieved very little but he won't have a lot in the bank either.

If he takes the biggest contract he can he at least covers off half the equation to the best of his ability.

My perception of the situation could be blade tinted I suppose as we have such a good group of lads at the minute. A big part of our success is the team spirit we have. I guess a balance has to be found for each and every player when they're making their decision.

I can’t see us letting him go into the last year of his contract when he can walk away for nothing at the end of it. That’s bad for both business and football reasons.

My impression from listening to Wilder in the last month or so was that Contracts have been put on the table, but the discussions were not going to happen until after the JTW closed and as we've seen Fleck has signed his, Norwood has intimated that he wants to stay, but Lunny has said nothing and Wilder has said nothing directly about Lunny.

There was a statement from Wilder a few weeks back when asked by RS about Lunny, that Wilder also mentioned Fleck and amongst others and said if he was them he'd accept whats being offered.
