The edge.
Hi all, depending on blackwells low key attack on the transfer market coming up,if you think like me and believe that the strikers weve got(inc billy)will probably be potent enough if we can keep injuries at bay,if so,what would be our best pairing,or three-some?Id like to see cressy, billy, camara up front with cressy just pulling of the front 2.???

cresswell playing behind Evans and Sharp! go for the jugular every game with attractive free flowing passing.....wait....is this a serious thread? meh - i prefer my delusions!

i would like to see evans and cressy up front with wardy on the right/pushing up to make 3 up front

that with camera on the bench to add something as a super sub and occasionally starting if a team has a particularly slow defence.

I just can't see us keeping Camara given his fitness problems coupled with his doubtless high wages.

I definately agree that Cressy and Evans is a solid foundation; a nippy striker from the lower leagues (if we are going with Wardy from the wings predominantly) and Boggy from the tykes would be more then enough in my opinion.

That would also leave us clear to raise around £3 million (optimistic?) from the sales of Sharp and Hendo.

KM talked about discussing a possible change of style recently but despite that, you can't see KB changing much in his approach next season re the strikers. I hope for the sake of style Hendo leaves as IMO, we play better football without him and in Evans and Cresswell, we have youth and experience and a potentially decent partnership. With Wardy around to fill in up front or play on the right and Yeates on the left, we have a decent attacking four to start with.

Unless KB can sort out his issues with Billy, I presume he'll be moving on which means we'll still need two more as I can't see us re-signing Camara. I would like to have seen us go for Hooper from Scunny although it seems his stock is rising at the moment and Celtic are apparently looking at him. Maybe Keogh from Wolves could be an option as he seems to have fallen out of favour (who knows, re-kindle the partnership with Billy ?).

Two key issues with all this, Hendo's operation and the situation with Billy, two areas which could hinder any moves.

I don't really care who plays up front as long as we play like we did at Ipswich. Best all round display i've seen in ages. Great performance obviously dulled by events at the sty.

I'd be happy with any of the following combos:

Sharp Evans
Evans Ward
Ward Sharp
Creswell Evans
Cresswell Sharp
Cresswell Ward

I think it is unlikely that Camara will stay. I think Henri is electric at times. However he is undoubtadely on high wages and you have to question whether it is worth it (in terms of his fitness record). He might have put himslef back in the shop windonw this season (and might further with the World Cup) and even if we do offer a new deal I think he'll go. I'm resigned to him leaving. I do think that I'd actually prefer us to shell out big wageds on a quality CB or CM instead of him. I'd also like to see us sell Henderson. He's a decent player, but he discourages to play decent (on the deck) football. He has many strong attributes (strenght, finishing and arial ability) but I think he is detrimental to the team. He gives away a lot of fouls, is ill displined, struggles with fitness and (most importantly) encourages hoof ball (although no fault of his own). However there is fat chance of this with KB in charge.

The 4 above would be enough for me. Ward could play on the right if necessary and we'd still have an asset on the bench.

If we're assuming a 4-4-2 formation I would go initially with Cresswell and Evans. The alternative to this would be Cresswell and Sharp. I think the attack should be built around those 3 next season though I dont see an Evans/Sharp partnership working. Cresswell has to be the constant for whoever plays alongside.

Hendo will probably go for a fee and I really dont see United offering the expensive/injury prone Camara a new deal.

My preference; Cresswell, Evans and Sharp with a young lad (Foster?) and a new signing for competition (Bogdanovic perhaps?).

We could build a good side that looks something like;

GK: Kenny
RB: Lowton
CB: Morgan
CB: Bartley (on a season-long loan)
LB: Naysmith
RW: Ward
CM: Williamson / Stop-Gap (new signing)
CM: Montgomery
LW: Yeates
ST: Cresswell
ST: Evans / Sharp

Subs: Aksalu, Taylor, Quinn, Reid, Foster and anyone else I havent thought of or who he might sign

Sorted :D

I'd put money on Henderson starting more games than not next season. I would like Cresswell and Evans, but knowing KB it will be Henderson and Cresswell ALL season! "get it lumped up, lads"

I doubt that. Senegal haven't qualified. But I do agree with you on Camara; he is entertaining at times but just isnt worth the investment. If he had scored 9 or 10 goals since we signed him I would have said yes lets take a chance but a combination of injuries and mixed displays make me think its probably one we shouldn't pursue.

Egg on my face. Never thought to check. Just presumed they were there.

I agree with you though. For his wages I would prefer someone to come in CM or CB and someone will pla more often than not.

Jim makes a couple of good points. 1st one is that Sharp will probably not play whilst KB is here. Also do we want him to play for Blackwell? His game clearly doesn't suit our style of play and expect more hoof next year.

Secondly (a point covered by blader below) is Henderson. Jim is right to say that we play better without him, but he is KB's signing and sums up everything about KB's style of play and management. He will stay. Linked to that is the Cresswell Evans partnership. I thought they played very well together for a stage last season (around January time). Evans was struggling to score (but playing very well) and Creswell was firing them in. I remember thinking that the 2 of them could fire us into the play offs (Ched just needed a goal and then looked like he could have gone on and got another 10) and Creswell was on fire. Unfortunately (and very predictably) Blackwell brought back Henderson after he recovered from injury. He broke up the Evans/Cressy partnership for the Bolton game and look what happened.

I'd put money on Henderson starting more games than not next season. I would like Cresswell and Evans, but knowing KB it will be Henderson and Cresswell ALL season! "get it lumped up, lads"

I feat this is true. Whilst ever Blackwell is in charge then Hendo will stay. He'll be his usual mixture of joy through the odd great goal, some good link up play and holding the ball up and then pain through ill discipline resulting in suspension and giving away numersous and also getting injured.

Expect more hoof ball next year and epxect to see Hendersons name on the team sheet (if fit).

So all in all, realistically we have:

Henderson
Cresswell
Evans
Ward (if you can count him as KB likes him out wide right)

That means we need another one or maybe 2 strikers. One with pace would be ideal as Cressy and Hendo are similar and have none. I'd like to see us bring in Bogdanovic from the Dingles. I fear that realistically we might end up with someone like Stern John!?

Yeh sorry wasn't being a clever twat, its just not often I get to correct others :D

Its funny though I made the same mistake about 3 weeks ago. I was having a conversation about the WC and said that I thought some of the African sides like Senegal and Ghana could do well. I then checked the groups and realised Senegal hadn't qualified which surprised me but there you go.

Does Camara still play for them? I know he's getting on but they can't have many better surely?

Midfield is the area we should be looking at with Harper going and never fit Williamson out again until october after his latest op.

Thats ok mate. You quite rightly pointed out my error. I know you weren't being patronising.

Think he is still playing for them. He's in the current squad and played in the world cup qualifiers.

They were unlcuky not to qualify actually. However they've not been in the WC for the last 2 times and even failed to make the african nations cup the last time around. I guess we just think of them after they stuffed the French (defending champions who had a brilliant team) in 2002.

our midfield could be our achiles heel next season.sorry monty fans but he is plainly not good enough.quinn fans, sorry, cos he,s not good enough either, coupled with that, harper doesnt seem like he wants to stay a blade(so piss off then)and williamson, who i think can do a job(but cant stay fit) seems a crock. So maybe we need to recruit a brand new central mid field.Nicky butt and Lee carsley would fit there nicely as i here they are both been hoofed by there clubs.Maybe if Kevin Mcabe surgically removes his chequebook from the inner depths of his anus, then we could have a chance next season.UTB

>our midfield could be our achiles heel next season
could?.. will.. always is..
ooh monty.. tries a lot.. everyone else wants to buy him.. ooh quinny.. been here since a foetus.. yadda yadda

I'm not happy at all with our forwards and think we badly need to add movement, pace and flair. I hope there will be a few ins and outs this summer as I can't see our playing style developing much with the current bunch.

Lowton plays one full game and you have him as your first-choice full-back for 2010/11.
Do you know something that I don't?

Broomhill, Its just a speculated lineup. Its not what I would necessarily go for; I'm simply projecting the kind of team we might have.

Lou, I think disagreed on something a while ago, but no need to let that ruin future football debates.

Chill Bergen. It was a tongue in cheek comment about our historical inability to attract quality players. It wasnt sarcaistic in the sense you would probably think.

If I'm honest I cant remember what our disagreement was, or if we had one at all. I agree with you that it would be nice to have some more flair and movement up front but I dont see us attracting much better players. I was therefore having a little joke. Nothing personal bud.

Quite right. How dare anyone suggest we haven't got the finest bunch of forwards in this clubs history. Shame on you Bergen for thinking we might want to improve on this seasons goal fest!

This is getting silly now. My comment was sarcaistic but it wasnt aimed at anyone on here. As I said I was just being a little 'tongue in cheek' - I happen to think we have decent forwards but I have no problem with those who wish to see better.

Personally, I try not to get as wound up about a football club and bite at every bit of banter I see or hear. Apologies if my comments were mis-interpreted.

According to BBC, Bogdanovic is in talks with us, is this the end for Billy?

And Bogdanovic is crap, WE WANT BILLY

The same Bogdanovic that tore us apart at Oakwell earlier this season. He is clearly not crap.

I just can't understand all this huffing and puffing about Billy Sharp when Blackwell clearly won't play him. On the of chance that Sharp does play under Blackwell he'll look like a Sunday League player when the ball comes flying at him from above (with snow on it).

And just how many times were we not torn apart away from home this season? He isn't any better than what we already have, so why waste the money?

Something has to change ,same manager, same training staff, unless fit players are found it could be a repeat of last season, its up to McCabe if he really wants to go for it in a weaker league than last season.
If it stays the same with the club just out of the playoffs at Christmas, McCabe will finally give in to the fans and get in a manager with half the season wasted.
