Was listening to Talksport very late last night. They had a Scottish journalist on taking about “the prospects of the 3 promoted teams”.

When discussing us he revealed that there is another team in Europe that play an almost identical style to us using overlapping centre backs.

United- said most pundits have Sheff Utd finishing in the bottom 3 but they are the most interesting of all the 3 promoted clubs and he can’t wait to see how they’ll play in the PL. He said he really rates Chris Wilder and they are famed for their overlapping centre back system. He said he’s recently spoken to the Preston manager Alex Neil about last years Championship and he told him the most difficult team they played against was Sheff United because they create overloads in the full back positions and it’s almost impossible to stop.

He said there’s another team that play a very similar system to Sheff United and that is the Italian club ATALANTA, said he watches loads of Italian football and they are his favourite team to watch how they play with 3 centre backs who take turns getting forward overlapping the full backs, he said they overload the flanks getting so many players forward and when out of possession they play a high press with the strikers chasing down players almost acting like defenders.

He said Atlanta is a truly remarkable story, low budget, no big named players but playing a very attacking exciting brand of football where they incredibly finished 3rd last season and qualified for the Champions league for the 1st time in their history.

His one reservation was...that Atalanta’s overlapping centre back system relies on them having plenty of possession and he said they also have an excellent target man to score from the crosses. So he’s really excited to see if Chris Wilder tries to play the same style with overlapping centre backs and whether it works at PL level. He said he suspects it will be difficult because he’s not sure whether SU can get plenty of possession like they did last season in the Championship so he’s doubts whether CW will be able to implement it to the same effect,

Prediction - said probably relegation but said that if our system can be implemented and works in the PL then he wouldn’t be surprised if we finish as high as comfortable mid table.

It bodes well that unfashionable low budget Atlanta can reach the Champions League playing our system....and it also makes me wonder if Wilder/ Knill are aware of the SU/ Atalanta tactical similarities. Going forward we could study their games to maybe tweak and improve our system.

Maybe we could also look at pinching a few of the Atalanta players... as they already know the playing system we use. We could be sister clubs and mutually benefit by swapping players.

Nowt but exciting today.

Or are we playing their system ?

Be interesting to see which club adopted it first.

History of the overlapping centre back system thread ?

Roy's view from Atlanta.

.

I don't see us going as gung ho this season, especially against the top 6. More likely we will use the system in home games against the teams in and around us. Let's see how brave we are.

The Atalanta coach Gianpiero Gasperini has always been a lower league manager, he’s in his 60’s and he joined Atlanta June 2016, he started badly (close to being sacked) then has been on an amazing run revolutionising traditionally defensive Italian football by being very attacking pushing defenders up field, fullbacks playing as wingers with one of the 3 centre backs occasionally overlapping the fullback. When out of possession they all (especially attackers) press hard to win the ball back as soon as possible. Their intense high pressing usually forces opposition defenders to play it long, so the opposition find it harder to keep possession.

Wilder has also always been a lower league manager, he joined United in May 2016, he’s in his 50’s, started badly for 4 games, then also gone on an amazing run since playing similar football to Atalanta.

I was being serious when I suggest that Wilder/ Knill study the Atalanta games/ tactics/ formations as it could offer further insight into our system and how we can treat/ evolve it. Would be interesting to know if Wilder/ Knill are already aware of the Atalanta similarities.

Looking at the time lines it looks like neither copied one another.....it’s just a coincidence as both managers started this style at roughly the same time.

Wilder and Knill invented it and the Atalanta coach was coincidentally at a Sheffield United game, saw it, liked it, copied it.

Probably.

Interesting article here about Ralph Hasenhüttl at Southampton and how he utilises a system he calls 'netting' (sounds like 'pressing' to me). But the young, bright managers (including CW) are constantly adapting and fine-tuning, yet dinosaurs like Bruce keep getting jobs.

I think they set up 343 and press high, but not sure they get the Centre Backs forward from what I've seen SS...more Midfielders and Wing Backs creating overloads with a wide forward...definate similarities though, and i would imagine CW/AK are aware of them

It helps that the front 3 are all different and they are individually and collectively their best players. Zapata is the target man, but he's also quite quick with a good touch but he's a beast. Ilicic is also tall but more of a false 9 mcgoldrick type but left footed and very skillful, great shot as well. Then gomez is the 10 and captain. Great player only like 5'5 or something, great balance, skill, speed and vision. I watch a lot of serie a football because one of my mates is a big inter milan fan. Incidently he's less than pleased with lukaku but that's another story. Atalanta are my favourite team to watch, they don't overlap the cbs as much as we do and they do press a lot higher and faster than us but there is a lot of similarities.

They are having another good season, hope we have an eye on a few players.

Your mate still annoyed about the lukaku signing?

Sunderland have copied our system and using overlapping CBs.

I watched their Champions League game (won 4-1) last night which was played at the San Siro, as did a couple of other posters on here, and can confirm that Atalanta do indeed play a very similar system to the Blades and line up as a
3-4-1-2
Scorer of two of their goals, Hateboer, is very much like Basham in style, their striker Ilcic, who scored one, is very similar to McBurnie!
Enjoyed the game and will keep a closer eye on their results from now!

They're a great side to watch
Goes to show, our style can conquer Europe. It's not just a pipe dream.

Can't wait for the 3-5-2 derby next season
