To a point, yes. I’ve seen how quickly things can turn around before, under Bassett. As a club, we weren’t awful, we got quite a lot of things right, decent enough stadium, good academy that produced players fairly regularly, it was just the first team (the important bit) that we kept getting wrong. If you’d said when Adkins came in that he’d take us up two divisions, like he did at Southampton, and we’d finish mid-table, I wouldn’t have said you were insane.

But, it’s the hope that keeps you going. If I’d been in a pessimistic mood I could have written a long list of reasons why it would be really difficult.

These things happen in football but most of the time, not to us. This is the season I was hoping for after 92/3, then we sold Deano so I’ve had to wait a few years.

Yes, I should definitely have added that to the list. The fact that 3 of that abysmal shower that were booed back then in their walk of shame under Adkins, are now Premier League players with us and that 2 figure regularly in the team/match day squad is unbelievable.

Regarding Bassett, he obviously couldn’t keep us when he came but I still remember our first game of the next season when he’d brought in his own players. I was absolutely blown away with how we played that game and the power and pace we played at, fast direct wingers like Roberts and every player giving 100%. Some said it that wasn't good to football but I thought it was like a breath of fresh air compared with what had gone before even under Porterfield. Just because there wasn’t much intricate passing didn't make it any less exciting to watch for me, but the big difference between this team and Bassett‘s is that it can adapt. It can battle and go long when needed, but then can also play as football as we’ve arguably seen since the early 70’s. Pundits talk about our style of play and our overlapping centre backs, but I think that our real strength under Wilder is in games like yesterday where we dug in and battled.
