Hmmm, futuristic like The Jetsons or that Chaplin film, Metropolis more like

This was Reg Brealey's design for the Lane from the 1980's which got knocked back by the council. I'm so glad that it didn't get built. It looks more like an old Hungarian or Soviet eastern block stadium from the 1960's/70's or something out of Thunderbirds. Oiks!

I'm sure those pictures (some of them) were released at the time and we were all purring over it back then. A massive improvement on what we had. Architectural styles come and go in fashion, like anything else. I just want them to get on an extend the stadium and make it a world class venue. They can do it in a Neo-Baroque, Gothic, Renaissance or Byzantine style with turquoise turrets (to match the one down at Wolseley Road) for me. Just build it and they will come!

Also enough space to fill in corners and increase size of a couple of the stands. I was always open minded about this.

That kop design wouldn’t look bad at a cricket ground but not for football

It says about a accomadation complex being built? Is that still happening? I thought it was part of the kop plans and hoped it wouldn't be happening now.

This. At the time these proposals were really popular, and all the outrage was directed at a “”Piggy council” for to supporting them.

What were the reasons the council had for denying that? Whether you like it or not, there's no reason I can see for turning it down.

Dire, and i remember thinking that the first time i saw them pictures in The Star all them years ago.

That’s bad...no way should kop end curve and move further away from pitch like that.
Having said that, the brutalist Laver Stand architecture looks so much cooler when it’s exposed without the plastic cladding.

Looks a bit like Hashemi's 'athletics stadium dream' format to me.

Either end up, it looks like utter shitwipe.

The only creditable thing is making the current cap park into a multi level facility - problem being is that the local road infrastructure would lock up on a matchday.

pommpey

If I remember correctly, it was something to do with local impact. Traffic, local businesses, local residential properties etc. You get the idea

It looks an abomination now but what you have know is that in the early 80s Athletics was a boom sport in Europe and the UK capacity crowds were flocking in to see the likes of Coe and Ovett but no big stadium was available in the Uk to host the big events.

Brealey saw this as a way of making money from big multi sport events at the Lane.

I was about 16 years old when that plan appeared in The Star and my first thoughts were.....wow! It’s funny how it looks crap now but at the time that design was impressive ha.

You’re right....athletics was starting to boom in the early 80’s.....Coe..Ovett..Daly Thompson really caught the public imagination, so the plan was to make make BL a multi events international venue.

The irony is that a few years later Sheffield bid for the world student games and were forced to build the EIS at massive expense. If they had agreed Brealeys plan then they’d have had an athletics stadium for free.

The pigs on the council at the time (one of them being a certain Councillor Betts) turned it down as they thought they were hamstringing us.

In retrospect they inadvertently did us a massive favour.

The Sec of State supported the council's decision when Brearley appealed.

Imagine if that had been built! 4 stands all completely different.

Remarkably the John Street seems to be the same old stand which we knocked down in the 90's

That Kop is just something else

Anyone got any pics of the massive casino they were planning in the 90s/00s?

The EIS was built after the World Student Games. The arena, Don Valley Stadium and Ponds Forge were built for them though.

And the Hillsborough sports centre, and the hockey pitch (Abbeydale?) and the ski slope, I think. Any more?
