Pedant alert!

SUT was nothing to do with SUFC.

As a child, I was sure that SUT was part of the football club.

Mind you, brought up as I was on the edge of the Fens, I also asked my Dad to take me to see United away at Bury in the League Cup in 1962 as it was only up the road. At the age of 10, I was convinced that the small agricultural village was the home of The Shakers, unaware as I was of Lancashire mill towns. Sadly, they don’t have a home of any sort now, but at least they won that game 3-1.

The writing on the back of this photo says Blackpool 1970, I’ve had a look at the fixtures and the Blades played Blackpool on 30th Match 1970 losing 1-0 in division 2. I have no recollection of this match (I was 6) but my sister informs me that I took this photo in the Foxhall carpark Blackpool. I would be most grateful if any historians out their can confirm the location.

We played at Blackpool over the 2 Easter weekends of the 1968/69 & 1969/70 seasons. The first one was 1-1 draw and the second, as you say we lost 0-1.

My main recollection of that March 1970 game was having a burger from a burger van outside the ground. About 24 hours later the burger decided to make a re-appearance and I was sick for about 2 days.

Never been near one of those burger vans since.

Ive been on that bus in the late 60's,with my fishing tackle to many places like the Trent Dyke at Newark 1st stop, stay on and go to Tattershalls Bridge on the Witham next stop Chapel Hill (Witham) and then Langrick Bridge (Witham),you could stay on and go to Swineshead (40 foot) and then onto the Boston drains (Sibsey Trader).

My preferred venue was Newark it was the first stop so you got longer fishing and the coach ticket was cheaper, and i preffered stick float in flowing water rather than swing tip on the Witham or the drains.

Happy days of my youth.

I was at that game on the bus with my dear Dad 0-0 as I recall listening to BBC sports report an the bus radio in the Gigg lane car park after the game. .....My mistake it was the FA CUP THIRD ROUND...The replay was 2-2 at the Lane then a second replay at Swillsborough (United won toss for neutral venue only time that has ever happened playing there without the pigs) we won that one 2-0

As we spent every Easter in Blackpool until I was about 12 I think that confirms it, thanks for your input.

I can vaguely remember going to an away match in a converted old Ambulance with bench seats in the rear which lifted up when you wanted a beer. It also housed the Piss and sick buckets too.
IIRC on one away trip the wipers broke and they had to tie blue rope around them and had two blokes pulling the wipers back n forth so the driver could see where he was going.
Cant remember the year or the match tbh as I was a nipper but we definitely set off early and from Fannies ( Lord Nelson ). UTB

It is based in Rotherham Bus museum. Which is open on the second sunday of each month. It’s interesting. Worth a trip.
A couple of times a year Rotherham bus museum have ‘bus running days’ and run a free bus to and from flat street. You can also ride on a vintage bus around Greasbrough and Conisbrough castle, included in the entry price of about 6 quid. I wouldn’t go again because it’s not my thing, but as a one off, it’s a great day out.

The strippers we had on our away day coaches were no 10’s but we never had to make Any of them them wear a mask.....

Went to the Easter game in 1970 but not on the SUT bus. Went on one SUT bus to a Bolton Wanderers game at the old Burden Park ground and remember the windows getting put through with bricks and went to a game at Ipswich Town and took for ever to get there. On arrival the friendly police said “ yer get in there you’ll be OK”, only to find when the ground filled up it was in the middle of their Kop and for the whole 90 minutes sang Beans on Toast. God knows why but think we won 2-1.

Happy days of my youth.

Used to get a coach from Lowedges bus terminus in my youth that did the same sort of trip. Great excitement as a 14 year old as to who we would be sat next to and as to where we would get off. Anyway, one Sunday me and my pal decided to get off at Hubberts Bridge.

Nice sunny morning and as usual catching only bootlace eels. Got to lunchtime and we decided to see if we could get in a pub. Just left our tackle on the Bank and off we walked in the direction of Swineshead. Eventually got to a pub and in we went, up to the bar, bold as brass, two pints please. Couldn't believe it, we got served. After four pints each off we staggered back, got to our tackle and fell asleep/passed out on the bank. When the coach came to pick us up we got an almighty bollocking for being asleep and not been ready.

Crap fishing, but first time in a pub and first pint.

I remember being told that Sheffield United Tours were nothing to do with the football club. I think I must have phoned them up one day to ask them what the plans were for away travel and it was explained to me then. Lovely photo in the OP btw - the "Sutty" were a Sheffield institution back in the day and the source of memorable day trips to the seaside - and away travel to football matches - for many of us.

I like your story about the confusion over the local "Bury". Not easy to find your way around those fens either is it? Cromwell had to use Hereward the Wake to help him out.

I once remember phoning Directory Enquiries and when they answered and said, "for which town please?" I said, "Port Vale". I was wanting to phone them up to ask where their club was? I'd had my road atlas out looking through the index of place names, but I couldn't find anywhere in the country called "Port Vale". The bloke on the phone goes..."do you mean Port Vale Football Club - is that what you're after?" and I said "yes" and I explained I wanted to go to watch a game there but I'd no idea where in England it was. Turns out the bloke on Directory Enquiries was also a Blade and he put me reight! "Burslem lad! Potteries". I was very grateful to him. I can't remember whether it was the same game, but I remember Edwards lobbing their goalkeeper from about 25 yards at their ground back in the old 3rd division days.

I had a similar experience trying to find Port Vale in the atlas. Mine was for a slightly different purpose though. I was about nine and I had drawn Port Vale out of the hat in my Subbuteo FA Cup draw against someone or other and I wanted to know if the game was going to be a local derby. Baring in mind at the time I thought Oldham Athletic and Charlton Athletic was a local derby!
