Full history Sheffield United v Manchester City

Almost twelve years have passed since we last met The Cityzens. Back then, City weren’t ‘all that’ but now both teams have reached pre-eminence in our home cities – and beyond. This last meeting was a 2-1 victory for the Blades in the 4th Round of the FA Cup against Sven Goran Eriksson’s City – or ‘Balloongate’ as it would be known.

Man. City’s ground back then was located in the Moss Side area – an extremely rough area. Some pubs had plastic windows and if you drove over, your car would be broken into. No ifs or buts.

Our last league meeting was on Boxing Day 2006 – a 0-1 home defeat in the Premier League:

November 1st, 1975 in the top flight. A 2-2 home draw in a season which would see us finish rock-bottom of Division One in front of the ‘new’ (South) Stand:

February 12th 1972 saw a thrilling 3-3 draw in the top flight at Bramall Lane (I don’t think we had the ‘Desso’ back then…):

The Manager:



Pep Guardiola joined Manchester City from Bayern Munich as manager at the start of the 2016-17 season. His managerial record – with Barcelona B, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Manchester City has yielded a Win % of 72.7.

For our match, Guardiola has written a sarcastic ‘Thank you’ note to the Premier League after City were asked to play twice in less than 48 hours. City kick off at Wolves at 19:45 on Friday 27th December – just 46 hours and 15 minutes before we kick off against them at The Etihad at 18:00 on Sunday 29th. The Blades have 75 hours from our kick-off v. Watford at 15:00 on Boxing Day to the City match.

Perhaps we should all bring balloons to tomorrow's game to commemorate that famous game. I'd love to see Pep's face if we scored from a goal deflected off a balloon (sadly VAR would probably now intervene.)

I’ve a couple of memories of Man City , but with a slightly different perspective
As most on here know , as I’ve mentioned it before during the eighties on various trips over by ferry / train
I bumped into Man City’s firm on my way to Sheffield, they were on there way to Forrest, every single one of em were sound and we had a good laugh , with no hassle between us ( there was another blade with me )
Then walking my dog in the Phoenix park , I had my Blades hat on and bumped into a couple of Blades out with there kids , who lived in castleknock we had a chat , then went our separate ways , it was the cup game with the ballon incident
I won’t mention the hassle before games at the lane but that’s a different memory of Man City

That January 22 game we didn’t lose, we won 1-0. A worldy from brown just before half time.

I went to that too. Aged 14, just decided on a whim to go with a couple of lads from youth club. Bus and a train. Absolutely no idea where the ground was, I think we just presumed we’d see it as we got off the train or something. Afterwards we were aimlessly wandering around moss side wondering how to get back to the station.

Seen 2 games at Maine Road, both 0-0. Stood on the Kippax with a City supporting mate in our 0-0 draw in the 1994 relegation season, and saw Man City play a friendly v Jamaica in the lead up to the 1998 World Cup in my second visit.

Mid 80s first visit losing 2-0 early doors if memory serves, away fans in a corner next to kippax who at this point did stop throwing golf balls at us but somehow we turned it around to win 3-2 bedlam in away end but the golf balls did make a reappearance....

How fortunes have changed, in 1962 we had both won the league once but we’d won the cup one more time than them. I can’t even be bothered to compare honours today.

My funniest memory of Maine road was my mate getting thrown out for laughing , we were on the kippax right at the side of the dividing line of coppers between the fans when this boiling hot pie came flying over from the city side and hit this copper full in the face , my mate was proper pissing himself when said copper and one of his mates decided to escort my mate from the premises ....... 10 minutes later he was on their end next to the line of coppers on there side still pissing himself
