Is McGoldrick’s heir already at the club?

I never lost faith, took some pelters from people who frankly wanted him to fail for whatever reason and I’m being proved right.

For me it’s not been down to him, I just don’t think the service has been there. Even the goal yesterday wasn’t really laid on a plate for him, he did all the hard work. But he’s an ice cold finisher, up there with Billy no questions.

I think he looks a bit more confident in himself though. That goal against Man United will have done wonders.

In answer to your opening question no, neither of the players you mentioned can play the roll didzy plays, especially Mcburnie. Can you honestly see Mcburnie putting in the lung busting runs Mcgoldrick does after 70 minutes? Me neither. There's so much more to Mcgoldricks game than simply being termed a link man. I'd love to see the stats about the most tackles by a forward in the premier league, he's got to be up there. Still far too early to be so self congratulatory about Mcburnie imo. Merry Christmas.

I think Mcburnie and Mousset are our best front two, however due to dropping a Duffy player we need Mcgoldrick to compensate. We either need a Mcgoldrick who can score or a midfielder who has all the attributes of the current three plus a creative spark. The midfield option might be cheaper however either option would not be easy. Maybe Mousset could do it when he is of equal fitness to Mcgoldrick.

Heir not hair, that was long gone before he even signed for us.

Not suggesting any of our current bunch can do the job Didsy does right now, but does anyone think Mousset or McBurnie in particular have it in them? Hard to see it with Robinson.

He’s 32 and it’s not like I’m advocating blooding his replacement right now because he looks fitter than ever but he’s so vital to the way we play that we need to look to the future. Same goes for Bash at the same age. 31+ becomes a bit of a lottery, legs can go at any time and the body can become a lot more susceptible to injury.

Our whole play goes through McGoldrick, despite his complete inability to score goals we look a far better side with him in the team. But if he gets struck down with an ACL injury does our whole season come crashing to a halt or do we try and mould one of the current bunch to play that role?

I see similarities in both Mousset & McBurnie’s games that are ‘didsy-esque’. Mousset’s presence of mind and technical quality in that first assist against Burnley, that finish against Man United and general trickery. But he’s sometimes got a lead boot touch which you never see from McGoldrick. And he doesn’t drop deep half as much (probably due to instruction but still).

McBurnie also has a lot of similarities in that his link up is very good, he’s technically good, he does drop deep to collect at times and he wins most of his aerial battles. He could however improve in his hold up play, and he has a way to go yet in terms of game knowledge to match what Didsy can do. He knows where the lads are with his back to them. Didsy also trickier and more ‘silky’. Better positionally than both too hence why he’s had so many more chances.

But I do feel they both have the basis of what we’re looking for. They’re both good footballers with a lot of strings to their bow. Both are obviously good finishers but McBurnie’s much more than a ‘big lad’ and Mousset is much more than just ‘pace in behind’.

So question is, touch wood, if anything was to happen to McGoldrick between now and Christmas would you be straight in the market for a replacement on 1st of Jan or do we have the talent already here to replace him and the role he plays for us?

Absolutely no way McB can do any of the stuff that McG can. For a start, McG has a low centre of gravity which gives him the ability to make a quick turn and glide away. He has quick feet and a quick brain. He can pick a pass and deliver. He can sprint. McB is a completely different physical specimen with different advantages and disadvantages. One of those, (thank God) is that he has a reyt shot on him and knows where the goal is. All he needs now is to take his position more seriously, continue with the obvious physical conditioning he has done and continue with what he has done for the last three games which is to actually be less static and to make the centre backs move. It's almost a new McB and he needs to stay where he is.

Moose is too erratic, too panicky, wants to do things quickly. He's young and just wants to drive on and score. Maybe in another 5 years when he learns to position himself under a dropping ball with a Centre Back up his arse, take it on his chest, trap it and then turn and pass like McG he may be his heir.

So no. We will have to buy another one or clone him. Duff was close in the way he dropped and found space, but he was a link man. McG is more than that. There has to be someone somewhere, but I don't think it is McB and Moose. In fact, notwithstanding my misgivings about McB, I see it as a waste of what he does well if he attempts to be McG.

Weapon? Grow up. Your opinion isn't gospel. You're seeing in Mcburnie what you want to see. I've said over and over I hope he's a success in the long term. Fact is he's not yet.

Not yet. He's had a better start than Mcburnie but was constantly flat footed against Villa. Another that desperately needs work on his fitness. Doesn't gamble on Mcgoldricks flick ons either. Lot to learn to be the finished article.
