Heir not hair, that was long gone before he even signed for us.

Not suggesting any of our current bunch can do the job Didsy does right now, but does anyone think Mousset or McBurnie in particular have it in them? Hard to see it with Robinson.

He’s 32 and it’s not like I’m advocating blooding his replacement right now because he looks fitter than ever but he’s so vital to the way we play that we need to look to the future. Same goes for Bash at the same age. 31+ becomes a bit of a lottery, legs can go at any time and the body can become a lot more susceptible to injury.

Our whole play goes through McGoldrick, despite his complete inability to score goals we look a far better side with him in the team. But if he gets struck down with an ACL injury does our whole season come crashing to a halt or do we try and mould one of the current bunch to play that role?

I see similarities in both Mousset & McBurnie’s games that are ‘didsy-esque’. Mousset’s presence of mind and technical quality in that first assist against Burnley, that finish against Man United and general trickery. But he’s sometimes got a lead boot touch which you never see from McGoldrick. And he doesn’t drop deep half as much (probably due to instruction but still).

McBurnie also has a lot of similarities in that his link up is very good, he’s technically good, he does drop deep to collect at times and he wins most of his aerial battles. He could however improve in his hold up play, and he has a way to go yet in terms of game knowledge to match what Didsy can do. He knows where the lads are with his back to them. Didsy also trickier and more ‘silky’. Better positionally than both too hence why he’s had so many more chances.

But I do feel they both have the basis of what we’re looking for. They’re both good footballers with a lot of strings to their bow. Both are obviously good finishers but McBurnie’s much more than a ‘big lad’ and Mousset is much more than just ‘pace in behind’.

So question is, touch wood, if anything was to happen to McGoldrick between now and Christmas would you be straight in the market for a replacement on 1st of Jan or do we have the talent already here to replace him and the role he plays for us?

You raise an interesting point, however I would say the Moose is more of an explosive player & would do far more damage at the top of the pitch. Oli maybe he could be molded into that player, he certainly is better when slightly deeper & running with the ball & has the added bonus of being a good finisher. However it wouldn't surprise me if CWAK are already planning for when Didzy is done & will look to subtly change the system with a completely different player, so we stay ahead of the curve before the top teams have a chance of working out a way to combat our current system.

What’s unique imo about Didsy is his a big unit but has skills of a nippy player. He can hold it up and move it around in tight spaces better than anyone At the club but can also provide killer passes for the likes of Lunny‘s runs.

So in answer to the OP I don’t think his replacement is with us yet. Maybe a certain Leeds player?

shame he can’t hit a barn door and is 5 years younger.

Wow.

McB or Moose doing the Dids role ?

Your levels of perception are more than interesting !!

Either that or last night was a humdinger 😉.

Do you think Dids was as effective doing this role at the age of 23...?
Look at what he was doing 9 years ago if you like. I think he was still struggling to get in the League One Forest side. This was before his loan move to League One Wednesday at the age of 25...

Bamford? Wilder wouldn’t look twice at him

McGoldrick was an excellent footballer all through his career.

An international footballer.

Has had a few “wilderness” years, mostly due to niggly injuries.

But he has always been a high technical level operator, and is currently proving to be highly effective in our PL side.

Moose doesn’t fit your perceived role at all.

McB ?

I can see where you are coming from in that he isn’t an out and out CF in the main. That said,THAT role as was 10 years ago just isn’t what it is today. You just don’t see Lineker type shitliners anymore. Forwards are expected to drop in, press high and generally move the defence with clever off the ball movement.

The Defensive midfielder??
Yep, Didsy is not a striker at this level he‘s a play maker imho. Use Philips higher up and 2 out and out strikers

Agreed.

His best role is the Duffy. I would love to see him behind a front two against some of the lesser sides and at home.

Compromise the 3 in midfield, get your noses in front early doors, shut up shop in last 20/30.

Neither could fulfill the role now. They haven't got the experience to handle the defensive side etc. But I do think that they could make up an effective partnership and between them fill a lot of the gaps Didzy does.

Also, Didzy is 100% in his prime now. Neither of those 2 are. Who knows what they could be?

I don't think there's a like for like with Didzy. With Norwood, he's what makes us tick. But it does now seem there's a clear pathway to something different, but good with those 2. Exciting times

That’s a strange shout, not seeing it myself. Norwood is the playmaker for us, Phillips would replace him if anyone.

Somebody on this forum has been pointing out that Mcburnie is not an archetypal nine and is more comfortable dropping in playing the link role or off a target man since he arrived at the club. Some expected the Scottish Shearer so it's no wonder they were shocked.😉

agreed to start a move but McG is the playmaker in the last 3rd with his linkup up play
But surely you sign another suitable forward then, not a defensive midfielder to replace a striker? 😂😂

I feel your pain...

Can't say I've seen a great deal of him in action, but I wonder if this is what the suggested interest in Ollie Watkins is all about? From the 'Style of play' section of his Wiki...

Watkins describes himself as "a number 10" and named Thierry Henry as his sporting idol, stating that "I try to base my game on his, by driving at defenders and looking to make something happen when I get the ball". He is also adept as an attacking midfielder or winger. He has also played as a centre forward.

Yep. I see a lot of McGoldrick in McBurnie. He’s always been better when I’ve seen him as a false 9 rather than as a big daft target man.

He absolutely dominated away at Swansea 2nd half last year. Now he's knuckled down a bit here's hoping we start to see some more link play from him.

I thought he was a brilliant signing. Lost a bit of faith back there but fingers crossed I was right the first time

I never lost faith, took some pelters from people who frankly wanted him to fail for whatever reason and I’m being proved right. :)

For me it’s not been down to him, I just don’t think the service has been there. Even the goal yesterday wasn’t really laid on a plate for him, he did all the hard work. But he’s an ice cold finisher, up there with Billy no questions.

I think he looks a bit more confident in himself though. That goal against Man United will have done wonders.

I just didn't see many glimpses of the ability he showed last year and coupled with him being a moron (still is 😂) it looked rough. Fair to all those who were 100% sure. I definitely had a little waiver 😁

But he isn't a target man. Up until Arsenal at home we were playing very direct. Since then, much more football which gives him a chance to shine.

Suppose I'll get pelters for this but I quite like Bannan. I've seen him a few times when I've watched Porkvision for a laugh and he very rarely gives the ball away, can find the killer ball and has a good shot. He's the only piggyplayer who has got owt about him.

Just what I was thinking. If we can't bring someone in to do the same/better job then I reckon CWAK could have a little tinker with the system.

Zlatan in January it is then ;)

I'm not sure there's a player like McGoldrick in the Premier League. If he had finished half his chances this season - we'd be comfortably in the top 4, he'd be carrying us & he would be being spoken of as a contender for overall Player of the Year in the Premier League so far. He's a ridiculous talent. A throwback to a different era - Bergkamp is the closest in style. But also Berbatov, Le Tissier, Zola etc.
