This isn’t a thread to discuss our best two striker options. I think we’re pretty much all agreed on that being McGoldrick and Mousset right now.
Instead I thought it was worth discussing the best types of striker for our system. Much is made of our midfielders and how they work together, Egan’s role as a stopper, the marauding centre backs, etc etc. But we don’t talk an awful lot about what two types of striker work best in our system. There are probably a few reasons for this, but I think it’s mostly a combination of 1) Wilder making a specific point of wanting different options and 2) the team playing so well these past few years that as long as our strikers were good, they’d find a way.
But pretty quickly, McGoldrick’s play has told us how important it is to have a player of his ilk dropping deep when we don’t have a number ten. And Mousset makes us think we need to pair him with someone who can stretch the opposing defences and open up space and be an outlet.
Have we happened across the ideal pairing style-wise for our system or are we just thinking that because both are so good? Do we continue to look for good “options” or do we look for players who fit into these roles.
Anyway, the answer is important because it probably tells us who we should be looking at longer-term striker wise. And also whether we should be looking at McBurnie as the McGoldrick or whatever. Plus I’m sat waiting for a delayed flight and I’m bored and thought this might be interesting.
