The BBC football daily Podcast is a Sheffield United special today, features interviews with O'Connell, McGoldrick & Wilder.

Not sure if that link will work or not.

I particularly enjoyed the O'Connell interview. Seems a very affable fella.

McGoldrick sounds desperate for his first goal & is beating himself up a bit about missing chances. Unlike Henderson, he definitely seems like one who probably responds better to an arm around the shoulder.

Simonsen
Westlake Higginbotham McGinty Williams
Hammond Lappin Woolford
Sammon Bent Paynter
I remember the first time I saw Woolford play, he slipped a beautiful pass through to Billy (away to Swindon Town) who made no mistake slotting home. I actually thought we had a decent player on our hands... saying that Connor Sammom looked handy in that game too.

And that is why you should never judge based on first impressions!

Edit: Replied to the wrong post!

Can't believe no one has mentioned Mark Bunn for worst goalkeeper ? virtually every shot from outside the area would creep in

Edit: haha just listening to the pod now :)

Baryford? No you can't. No case at all.
How many players have took a pay cut and dropped a division to join us? If you were at Preston away, the joy amongst the fans when that news dropped was immense. Guy was a legend and got injured, I'd not say he was the best but deserves a mention.

What influence has a pay cut and dropping a division have on his performances? None.

Legend? Please don't!

He played well for a limited period when on his initial loan. Upon his return he was at very best average.

They might not be the worst individuals (compared to others on this thread) or characters ever but Micheal Doyle and Neil Collins were ever present in a era of failure and humiliation making more than 360 league appearances between them. And to be frank I was ecstatic when both were no longer here.

Each to their own but Brayford to me was like the inverse of what I said about Barry Robson on the pod, about how he (Robson) is a player I just associate with falling out of love with United for a few years. Brayford was the first player in a while that actually acted like he cared about what the fans thought of him and went out of his way off the pitch to show it. It was also the first time I'd noticed a United player interacting with fans on social media (of course he wasn't literally the first - he was just the first one I properly noticed) and really throwing himself into being a Sheffield United player and acting like he was proud to be here.

You could cynically say it was all a charm offensive, and we do deride Warnock for basically doing the same thing ("best set of lads I've ever had" etc), but I really appreciated it at the time. "Legend" is pushing it but he was genuinely excellent for us in that loan spell and I do reckon you could make the case for him being our second-best RB/RWB of the decade. I'd personally shade Freeman just above him but it is up for debate IMO.

Where do you start with the worst XI?! I've gone for a 4-4-2 formation as that's what all outdated, underperforming sides seem to use; the eagle eyed among you will spot that there are 5 midfielders but one of them is the invisible Dean Hammond so I figure we'd get away with it.

GK: Mark Howard. The most mediocre goalkeeper of a fairly poor selection: we didn't actually have any horrendous goalkeepers through the 10s but then neither did we have any good ones until Henderson joined in 2018.

RB: Darryl Westlake. Another in a line of players we signed from Walsall with high expectations and low reality. Sank quickly, last seen at Stourbridge in 2016.
DC: Neill Collins. The fact that we sank from the Championship into the quagmire of League One and couldn't get out was because our spine was poor - nowhere near as good as they thought they were. Collins' ability to deflect the blame onto his younger colleagues was impressive, his series of sub-par performances less so.
DC: Danny Higginbotham. Should have retired six months before he pitched up at the Lane; played like he already had
LB: Marcus Williams. It wasn't his fault he was shit but it was a fact. Incapable of a five yard pass; specialised in shanking clearances into touch 5 yards up the line

RM: Fabien Brandy. Dead from the neck up as evidenced by those two red cards.
MC: Michael Doyle. This will be controversial but the fact remains that while Doyle was at the Lane, we were awful.
MC: Dean Hammond. Parasite. Did lots of unseen work; so busy doing that that he did fuck all visible work...except giving away a ludicrous penalty in the 93rd minute at Old Trafford
MC: Florent Cuvelier. Promised so much, delivered so little. Permanently injured
LM: Kieran Wallace. It wasn't his fault we plucked him from non-league and dumped him into the third tier but a basic football ability would have been nice. Foxy has a video somewhere of a fantastic free-kick Wallace took.

ST: Daniel Bogdanovic. Barnsley fans were gutted when we signed him. He was shite.
ST: James Beattie. See Fabien Brandy.

Manager: "Alehouse" Micky Adams. Shades Weir for me because of the lasting damage his reign did to the club. Awful signings, alienation of our better players, the last United manager to get us relegated. A terrible legacy.

Honourable mentions (>10 apps)
Goalkeepers: Steve Simonsen (that penalty); George Long (better than many gave him credit for but the 2016 version, confidence destroyed by a combination of Neill Collins and the Kop, was pretty awful); Iain Turner (can't actually recall any performances)
Right backs: Tony McMahon (shitbag); Johannes Ertl (harsh; but post knee-knack he was terrible)
Centre backs: Nyron Nosworthy (Notworthy); David Edgar (nondescript); Cameron Carter-Vickers (unbelievable ability to take his teammates out); Paddy McCarthy (too good to train with his teammates)
Left backs: Joe Mattock
Right mids: Barry Robson (we chased him for ages and he was godawful)
Centre mids: Samir Carruthers (so much promise, so little delivered)
Left mids: David Carney (the world's neshest Australian); Martyn Woolford (the best performance he gave was his middle finger to the Kop. At least he put some effort into that)
Strikers: John Cofie (Man U paid £1,000,000 for him when he was 14!); Marcus Bent (desperation signing); Jonathan Forte; David Kitson (another with an inflated belief in long-since-departed ability); Michael Higdon (Higgopotamus); Conor Sammon (the best striker in the world when it comes to missing open goals from 4 yards)

Swap Williams for Andy Taylor and I agree with you.

I toyed with that idea but my recollection of Taylor was that he wasn't as bad at the basics of football as Williams. Of course, that should be mitigated by the fact that we brought him on in the last minute of extra time against Huddersfield in the play off final specifically to take a penalty...which he missed. Fine margins and all that but we'd have gone 2-1 up after 4 penalties each had he scored.

Seeing your post I realised I'd not left any comments about Joe Mattock but somehow that seems apt.

Taylor is the poster boy for that era. Crap, frequently injured, on more money than he was worth, failed in his big moment.
It is a testament to how bad those years were that he didn’t make Beans and Roy’s teams.

the Barry Robson corner was in a 0-0 draw against Carlisle, which also featured shocking displays from Forte and Ironside and a typically gruesome foul from Tony McMahon. Bad days.

Robson got booked for dissent after the referee blew up for half time too. Summed up his time with us - taking an age then blaming someone else for his mistake. Twat.

bizarrely, Bunn tied the club record for consecutive clean sheets in home games in 2009-10 when he kept 7 in a row.

Cheers Tray! Yeah, I found this quite cathartic. I know we do the "look how far we've come" quite a lot but it is kind of shocking how many of these players were playing for us no more than 4-5 years ago.

A few people have mentioned Cofie to me. I only saw him a couple of times and he did score a brilliant goal in one of them (against Bournemouth maybe?). I had to go with the sustained misery of Sammon and Hidgon over him.

I must confess I quite liked Matt Hill, particularly at centre-half.

Forgot all about that Beattie red card at Charlton. He also got sent off in the first half at Exeter in the final game of the season, a game we needed to win to have any chance of catching Wednesday, and of course missed that absolute sitter at MK Dons a few weeks before. Ugh. Good job he'd had a much better spell with us beforehand (even though it WAS in the previous decade) otherwise he might well have cracked this team!
Any reason why there isn’t an interview with one of their podcaster fans? Are they harder to get hold of, when they are a big side as I noticed that there wasn’t one with Liverpool either?

I get your point, however when you say 'basics of football' that's exactly what Taylor gave us. He ran like Billy Casper on a cold day, had no strength, shrank by a foot when he jumped for a header and hoofed the ball long down the line with a terrible left foot more times than I care to remember.

The fact that he came on to take a penalty despite never showing the capability to be able to do so in his previous time with us and then missing with a pretty weak effort.

I think when he gets older he'll turn into a Montgomery Burns lookalike given his stature and poise.

Williams was shit but didn't get as much football as Taylor so I dislike him less.

I'm afraid I just didn't have time this week - got a lot going on and not much free time in which to do it! There was a Liverpool guest btw, Lizzie from the Anfield Wrap. So just coincidence rather than the big clubs not giving little old United the time of day ;)

That last line got me thinking so I had a quick look on Soccerbase and found that Williams actually made more appearances than Taylor, although the latter shades the league appearances on starts.

Need to check my stats in future. Maybe it just seemed longer to me because he was that bad!

Marcus Williams as a left winger though, I shudder at the thought.

Here we go again, Neil “the albatross” Collins should be In there. As others have said not only an ever present in our meteoric decline to league 1 but also tried to destroy George Longs career before it got started.

Taylor did that over 3 seasons. He was always injured.

That non-corner is probably the most angry I've ever been at a United player. The fact that we all knew what was coming (except Robson) made it so much worse. It felt like we were all screaming at him to get on with it for at least 30 seconds.

Beans Roygbiv

Best episode of Blades Pod for a while. Whilst my favourites one will be the ones that documented our promotion last season this one is also up there.

I listened to it on the long drive to work this morning at 4am and played along in the car, and I think every player I came up with you mentioned. Some of the names I actually shuddered at, and I had even managed to forget about Nyron Nosworthy until you mentioned his name.......

Really good pod. Made a midnight slog home from Gatwick very enjoyable. Cheers lads.

Seen a lot of John Cofie love here.

The highlight of his career was when he went for a shit in the pitchside portaloo at Brizzle Rovers.

Enough said.
