I'm nearing my 50th year of watching the Blades in all four divisions. Some amazing highs and some very low lows. If you have supported Liverpool, Manure, Arsenal, Chelsea, Spurs, Everton and quite a few others over the same time period you don't know what lows are however listening to Arsenal fans you may think so.
Over the years there has been sporadic success, semi finals, play off finals, promotions etc. The passion we hear now and every match at the Lane now comes from a different feeling. We are in the Premier League and doing well. However the feeling all us Blades have isn't a feeling of aren't we doing well its a feeling of we are on an upward curve in the same way our Management and players are. Who would of thought 18 months ago that players like O'Connell, Stevens, Baldock, Basham, Lundstrom, Fleck and Norwood wood develop in the way they have and look so comfortable.
We were told out overlapping fullbacks would be able to do that in the Premier League, try telling that to Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool, Palace and Burnley fans.
I was blessed to be able to watch Woodward, Currie, Dearden, Reece, Salmons, Hockey and Hodginson play and have some awesome memories. There have been some other fantastic players along the way but none of the played in a team as good as the 70s team. They were expected to get results and often did. I have the same feeling about this present team as I did back then. That confidence is build on a rock solid defensive formation which starts with our front two and runs throughout the team. When we don't have the ball we hunt as a team to get it back as our forwards and midfield set traps to steal the ball back. When we do have it we like to protect the ball and are not afraid of letting our back three and goalkeeper have the ball to keep possession. We are an awful team to play against and our passionate fans know this.
I don't expect any team to really turn us over, its not the Sheffield United way these days, that's not to say it won't happen, but it won't happen often.
The only thing that worries me is injuries that could upset the balance so every point is priceless at the moment.
Could we win at Tottenham, yes why not. Will we win, probably not but I doubt we will get mullered with the most likely result a hard fort draw with Tottenham having an awful game against a United team that rode their luck (think Chelsea, Everton, West Ham, and most of our results this season)
I fully expect this team to be as good as the 1970s team at some point and then go on to be better. Thats how good it feels watching my beloved Blades at the moment.
