1. Where does the info Jean is training with the First Team come from?
2. "Banging them in for U23s" implies he's a goalscorer - he's a Centre Half

I'll confess, I'm confused by this thread.

You're not the only one Phil, and if anyone should know about what happens at the varying levels of SUFC, it's you young man.

Given that the first mention of JLB began in began in mid-2017 why has this suddenly become newsworthy?
 
I can now confirm Jean has in fact NEVER scored for our U23s. Frenchman Simeon Oure was a regular scorer, but has been released. Frenchman Nickseon Gomis, another Centre Half is still with United.

I'm by no way big on development team news, only recently has it started crossing my path.

Given his knowledge, Ball_Sup (Phil) should be the man to answer our questions on this?
 
Stats are prior to the U23s v Hull on Saturday night.

Jean has started 7 of the 10 U23 games this season. We've basically used 5 Centre Backs interchangeably
Kean Bryan 2
Nickseon Gomis 2
Kyron Gordon 8
Ashton Hall 4 (+1 Sub)

Jean played 11 times (+1 Sub) for the U23s last season. He also played 14 times (+2 Sub) for the U18s last season. Scoring twice.

Putting Bryan to one side. Jean, Nickseon, Kyron & Ashton are all much of a muchness. All competent, organised & good footballers. Usual point. It is virtually impossible for an Academy player at a Premier League club like ours to break through into the first team. Consequently, Jean won't. He's not particularly a big strapping beast. But, he'll grow. I have noticed that Jean steps up his game when it gets a bit physical. I've seen him get into the ding dongs when he's up against a Big Lad. He's got a simple, all round game. Good positionally. Good on the ball. OK in the air. Committed when his gander is up. I haven't particularly noticed a turn of pace if I'm honest. But, he isn't one of those youngsters that you notice all the time & makes you look up

No. But I doubt it's anything more than "routine". I assume it's not unusual for a Young 'Un to have a run with the first team. Mixes things up a bit. Keeps things fresh. Boosts morale. They have to wear some kit. It's his turn to be 54 this week. Maybe they think he's got some characteristics like a particular Burnley player & he'll play "a role" in training. I don't know. But, I'd be amazed if there is much in it other than normal, week in week out "Development Opportunity".

Maybe him training with the first team has everything to do with Kean Bryan's paternity leave

So to summarise, and I'm sorry if this has been discussed before, a realistic explanation for the Academy's existence is to find that rarest of players who might shine amongst our first team (that's team, not squad), either going on to becoming a star player or to display his skills to such good effect that eventually we'll realise a transfer valuation that contributes towards the continuation of the Academy plus bring in previously (post-Prem) much needed income for the running of the club and additional money for new signings? Any truth in this? Or is there another reason that escapes me?
