McGoldrick’s absence

Yep - a lot of people have been talking about how playing without an AM is limiting our creativity, and they're right, but I think the extra defensive solidity of the flat 3 (so far) and Lundstram's strong performances have counterbalanced this to an extent.

However, this only works when one of our strikers is willing (and able) to drop a bit deeper, link up with the midfielders and create openings. McGoldrick does this excellently, and McBurnie/Robinson have yet to prove they can. Hopefully that will change, in time, but for now, it should be McGoldrick +1 up top.

I'd really like to see Mousset and McGoldrick start together soon. I think the combination of Mousset's willingness to use his pace to get in behind and McGoldrick's willingness to drift and drop deeper as a creative impetus could work brilliantly.

So we aren’t scoring many goals, our top scorer is OG, and we all keep discussing strike pairings as if it’s suddenly going to click us into scoring 4 a game. You’re wrong, it won’t. Be it Billy with Oli, Didsy with Moose or Billy with Robinson - we simply will not become a free scoring team and...

I thought Robinson was bought in as a backup/replacement for McGoldrick, to drop back and link with midfield or drift out wide and cut back in and generally cause problems in the holes. But Robinson hasn’t done that, except a great second half at Chelsea. I Can’t see any reason why McGoldrick won’t start again once fit, his performances have been excellent
 
Agree.....couldn’t care less if McGoldrick never scores again all season
...as long as his contribution is significant enough to help us win points.

We’ve played a few games and you can already so the patten.

Positives
Defensive we are superb and there’s a real link between defence and midfield. We don’t lump it forward but patiently play out from the back.

Negatives
We’re really missing Mark Duffy finding space between midfield and attack and making clever passes retaining possession.
Last season McGoldrick showed that he can to a degree also play that role, he drops deeper into midfield....great hold up play and clever lay-offs.
Agree that McGoldrick is really important to our system and we miss him.

An alternative which initially looked good in early games was playing Luke Freeman in that Duffy role.
He looked very good but for some reason hardly plays these days. Wonder why he’s out of favour?

Another alternative is to forget about our clever expansive football and do what we did away at Everton.
I get the impression that if we focus defensively we’re not going to concede many this season. Defensively we look so strong.
Then we could use Mousset and bring in some more sprinters and become a counter attacking side in future seasons.

I completely agree with this and I like him as a player but the problem I have is that he is neither scoring nor creating goals. On that basis he isn’t contributing, regardless of how much he does to link up play etc. Most of his best stuff goes backwards.

The goals conceded makes us seem solid at the back but not sure it shows the real picture and sadly I don't buy this we are great defensively argument. We have ceded 6 glorious chances in the last two games...mane x 2, Salah and the 3 yesterday. These were all sitters. A good defensive side does not get torn open for such easy one on one chances. The shape of the defence on the first 2 chances they created was Sunday league stuff with skme going out and some going back.

We have been very fortunate the last two weeks in the sense the opposition have created 6 clear chances. All were on a plate. We in contrast have barely created anything clear at all.

Going back to the op...Didzy has to start for me...I personally would play him and Freeman in front of Fleck and Norwood. Then toss up between Billy and Mousset. The other two have been completely ineffective the last 3 or 4 games.

He's injured.

I reckon that's the strongest argument for not having him in the team.
 
Hope he's back for arsenal I really fancy us to beat them

I was referring to the argument made by many people clamouring for him to be dropped for missing chances vs Southampton.

If you don’t realise that one of the most debated things this season has been our front two, you must be in the extreme minority.

Don't get me wrong I really rate him and can't wait for him to get back in the side
I just think it's interesting that he was the object of abuse for missing chances and now it's mcburnie and Robinson's for not having any

I think he could have made a difference yesterday but so could Freeman and he remained on the bench.

We’ll never know of course but roll on the Arsenal game because I think we’ll put it right against better opposition, as seems to be our way.
 
Ireland are missing him too. Same sort of issues as us. Huge gaps between midfield and attack, defenders come out, pass to a midfielder who's only a few yards in front, and the the attackers are 30 yards away with the opposition midfield between them and their teammates.

Agree big miss to-day for ROI but also Enda down the left as they lacked balance. Robinson gave another invisible performance and was hooked continuing his poor form. Egan played an assured game and hit the post.

Yeah, McG and Enda are the ball carriers for RoI, only ones that can really take a man on and make some space for themselves.

Egan was quality, bit of a mixup with Coleman toward the end but I think he recovered ok from Coleman leaving it.

"Cleared by Egan" was probably the most spoken line on comms.

Robinson was poor. I was pleased he was starting because game time, but it doesn't seem to be doing anything.

I think Connelly will take his spot going forward once McG is back.
 
Egan given Mom, Enda missed big time and Didsy too, Enda back for swiss game boy it was hard to watch
