We would be facing Oxford in the next round.

As utterly impressive as they were in their victory against West Ham... we should be beating them...

Then in the QUARTER FINALS it would be the winners of:

Crawley vs. Colchester
Everton vs. Watford
Villa vs. Wolves
---
Man City vs. Southampton
Chelsea vs. Man Utd
Liverpool vs. Arsenal
Burton vs. Leicester

---
The winners of the top three ties we'd have a good chance of beating, and would have 42.8% chance of facing them for a place in the SEMI-FINALS

As for the other ties listed below that... less so. However they would have been against a BIG side with good match-day revenue and possible TV coverage.

I suppose as a club we're bored of cup runs :D no-one should be happy or apathetic about tonight IMHO, it was utterly unnecessary defeat with a poor performance to go with it.

We're in football to win trophies, and apart from Birmingham in 2011 I can't think of any example where a League Cup run could be argued to have negatively effected a premier league survival campaign. And to be honest I'd be happy if we did have a Birmingham 2011 season.

We praise the club well when things go well... the same should be when it's the opposite. Not throwing toys out of pram of course, but really disappointed.

We should have learned after the Barnet game, and we were lucky to beat Blackburn.

I just can't understand why we don't take these games seriously.
 



this is league cup it adds to already congested 1st half of season. 26 games before fa cup 20 games afterwards. also nobody worth drawing either its a lower league side or watching our reserves play man utd youngsters. that game is far more important to sunderland than us. wouldve just been an irritant between west ham & burnley

if this in january yes id be furious FA Cup is only cup that matters. Barnet got more prize money & recognition for winning there fa cup 2nd round game than Chelsea did for making league cup final.

Thing is last season we played 46 league games (and could have been 49 if we missed out on promotion to Leeds). In the Premier League you play 38 games.

So that's four less games per half of the season. With a potential cup run replacing those... I think we could have coped.

Not picking on you or anyone but I genuinely can't think of an example where a team went down/suffered badly from taking the league cup seriously apart from Birmingham in 2011.
 
Premier league football that's all that matters to any football club that can achieve it , like doh !
 
We lost, and that's difficult to take from such an inept performance. However, we know from past performances that as good as the players are individually we struggle to produce when we make so many changes; yes I know Sunderland did too.

Overall, its the performance that hurts not so much the result for me but we always do well after a defeat, maybe this could be a blessing!

no worries but its still 3 games in a week & as i say you can go back to barnet. i was fuming but i was same on our eventual cup run v spurs. i didnt care if we won or lost until Southampton in quarters. but FA cup i cared from 1st round at Colchester

In the real world it’s all about the money. The men in suits have no real interest in the EFL cup.
The prize money is embarrassingly low, the winners earn £100,000 in prize money, the losing finalists earns £50,000 prize money.
Compare this to the F.A. Cup where the winners earn £2,000,000 (that’s 2 million) prize money.
Money from being in the PL massively beats any success in the cups.

I get that but why can't we have both?

(Wigan 2013 are another 'bad' example)
 



Unless Chris wilder is reading these forums or a very close personal friend, we will never truly know if has has thrown these cup games, I strongly suspect he has and I have absolutely no problem with it if he has.

It’s alright saying ‘ I really really wanted us to win tonight and have a run in the cups’ but reality sets in when you have say Norwich away on Saturday and Burnley at home the Saturday after, and you have to squeeze in a midweek tie against West Brom at home. Then it becomes a burden. Then the points become jeopardised because of a cup we don’t want to win anyway. We need to stay up this season and experience another two transfer windows where we can build a reserve team properly on a level with our first team. Think about the dilemma we have upfront. We need a similar dilemma in midfield and one at the back before we can contemplate a cup run and potentially European football.
 
When I saw the line up tonight, which I was expecting, I thought it might be a 1-0 win or narrow game that goes to penalties.

Come the end of the season I couldn't care less if we were knocked out of this or the FA Cup, so long as we stay up, though the FA Cup holds a bit more prestige.

I'm not upset by the result or performance tonight as I'm more bothered about Saturday. I'd be more upset if our team had 50%-60% of our main starting line up.

The way I see it is a lot of Premier League teams went out over the last two days. Brighton, Bournemouth, West Ham, Spurs and us. We put a reserve team.

Man Utd put out a team which included Wan-Bassika, Jones, Fred, Pogba, Lingard, James and Mata by the final whistle, and they needed a penalty shoot out to beat Rochdale! That's more embarrassing from my point of view. They're on far bigger wages than our players.

That's a common mistake to make. If we had won we would not have necessarily been playing Oxford in the next round. Anyhow, we didn't win, so it's rather irrelevant. It's a bit like the ghost of Jim Bowen this thread! ;)

This league cup malarkey needs removing from football
A quick glance at tonight's results shows the contempt it's held in
West ham . 4-0 at Oxford fielding a weak team
Man Utd needing penalties to get past Rochdale as they played the youth teams
Several other prem teams capitulating due to selection of strangers to first team football. The competition is a joke .
Attendances show the lack of interest from fans

It needs scrapping. Its seen as a total inconvenience

Wigan won the FA cup then went downhill. Very downhill. Portsmouth won the FA Cup then went downhill. Very downhill

As a fan of a club that hasn't won anything for nearly a century, I find it astonishing that anyone would wish to see our best chance of a trophy scrapped! Teams have played weakened teams and fans have stayed away in the early rounds for as long as I can remember, in both cups. If we'd got through last night it would have started to get interesting.

but that's the FA Cup different, I could tell you most things from that game, but I couldn't tell you who won the league cup last season

If we had won the League Cup it would be our first domestic trophy since 1925, with a place in the Europa League to go with it for the first time in our history. Hell, if we only made the final and had day out in Wembley it would be the first time since the 1930's.

I don't see how we can be so snobbish/apathetic about it considering our history. I'm not saying we really could have one it, only that we should have taken it seriously.

I'm yet to see a negative correlation between taking the league cup seriously and a relegation battle. Birmingham actually were well clear of the relegation zone after they won the cup in 2011 it was only after that they collapsed.

Trophies I want are the fa cup or. Any league title. The Dumbledore cup or milk cup or whatever it's called is not something I could get. Giddy over
