Fans pathetic tonight

Maybe if players give the fans some thing to sing about they would have and using that as an excuse is pathetic also. The players didn't want it as simple as that. Nothing to do with the singing. I agree I think the kop should always be open but I wouldn't ever excuse a performance like that on fans not signing.

Looking for the South Stand Massive to provide atmosphere doesn't work, it is what it is, I'm not blaming people who sit on the South, but it's the moaning/shouting at the ref stand.

For unbridled get behind the lads support, it's the Kop and part of the reason the south is poor in that regard is because that has been the case forever.

And yeah, give us something to shout about.

I know the fans are meant to encourage the players but it's a two way street. Barring the odd moment from moose there was nothing to get excited about in that match. The loudest it got from us was getting on at that disgrace of a referee

Maybe it’s just nobody cares about the cup. It’s a glorified friendly. Squad rotation and all that shit.

To be fair though I saw a few people get asked to sit down on south stand today while they was singing the worlds greatest anthem. If your own fans ask you to sit for this why the fuck would you bother

that’s what u meant by chicken and egg (bit cryptic.. sorry)

Didnt hear one song sung, Sunderland fans certainly got to our players and you could see it.

I dont blame the fans fully, the club closing the Kop was partially to blame but that was poor tonight.

Don’t disagree but at the same time it’s our 2nd team in the second round of the whatever the fuck it’s called this year cup, against League One opposition. Not exactly going to be a cauldron is it?

It’s a joint effort....the players and the fans didn’t seem bothered tonight.
Agree..it’s very rare that I’ve been to a United match and sat in total silence, no songs, not even any jeers or boos.’

Don’t usually go to cup matches, so missed the Barnet game.
Think I’ve got to go back to when we lost 0-3 in the cup being totally outplayed by Swansea, when our fans were so quiet, with not even a boo.

Yeah I know mate my reply wasn't aimed at you pal. It was just in reply to the thread. Got to be one of the most lackluster performance we have had we could have still been playing now and wouldn't have scored.

Closure of the kop. Second eleven. Doesn’t make for an atmosphere, sadly.

If the kop is closed, it makes zero difference how we play, there won’t be any atmosphere.

No one comes out of tonight very well except the players not selected. For me the forwards get a pass as well because the back 8 were awful and the service provided was crap.

I could go through the team and slaughter many of them but can't really be arsed. I feel a little sorry for Ravel as well who at least was trying to think positively, but he didn't really show much either.

There are some night when they should just give the MOM a miss, and tonight was one of them.

Closing the kop is a mistake. My advice would be to close the JSS in future

Don’t know why we didn’t put out a decent side and go for a win in this to be honest, especially when so many Premier League teams are disinterested, meaning there’s a half decent chance of getting to the final?

We’ve got less league fixtures this season and there can’t be many more fixtures left to play in this cup?

Are we just too big time to bother with the League Cup now or what? 🤷‍♂️

I agree mate if you read the rest of the post I have basically said that. I am just saying I agree the kop should be open as I don't like it when we leave the kop shut it looks shocking to the away fans as well as it making the cup into even more of a joke. The club cant even be bothered with the cup never mind the players, staff or the fans. I think it sends out the wrong messing and makes us look like a tin pot club also.

It all makes you appreciate the value of a very together team who know their jobs inside out, and a big, supportive crowd who appreciate every good pass, tackle, and high energy play.
Sadly, none of that can happen at this stage of this competition against a team from a lower league, and the outcome is all too predictable.

Was never going to be one bit different.

No Kop = no proper game = no urgency.

More than a big enough attendance to justify opening it but it would only have helped the team so it's no wonder they didn't....

I'm emphatically right about closing it - it is cheap, pathetic and sends totally the wrong message.

It's an insult to the competition, it's an insult to our fans who want us to win and it's an insult (but a great help) to Sunderland.

100% about shutting the Kop. It should be the first part of the stadium opened in every game because that's where the drive comes from.

Start by opening the Kop then fill the rest as needs require. Opening the other stands before the Kop has proved to be a disaster. Let's not do that again?

'The club' obviously understand the square root of fuck all about football and the effects and the message of an empty Kop.

But Wilder knows. If he's bothered about the cup, the Kop would be open and that's it.

I agree about the South stand atmosphere in general (and that's where I sit now so am acutely aware) but I don't get that about tonight's game - are you saying there was no one who normally goes on the kop on there tonight?

Yeah there will have been, dotted around, but there are also more people who don't go at all/very rarely, so any benefit the Kop lot bring is impeded further.
