I doubt Brooks had any input on the Moose whatsoever......he appears to have taken zero interest in goings on at BDTBL since he left for the big time on the south coast.....which is absolutely fine by the way, there's no truth in all that "once a Blade always a Blade" bollocks....it's a job to most!

Not exactly true. I’ve seen him ‘like’ and ‘comment’ on plenty of things SUFC on Instagram since he left. That’s as good as it gets with modern footballers.

There seems to be a lot claiming player recommendations and character witnessing is commonplace. It might be from the championship below, but in the Premier league most clubs have DOF's, transfer committees and coaches. In these situations I highly down there's recommendations from players.

You are so right. Top 6 are in a different market, much to their disadvantage.Too many signings around £40-£60m completely fail.

Often the D.O.F. has a different culture/vision to the manager.


Supply and demand wirh loads of cash swishing around, making DOF's lazy - 'whats the odd £50m matter' when youre spending £150m plus annually.

We have striven to adopt the european model over the past couple of decades. Coaches and DOFs are the flavour of the month. I know in some cases it works, but it never ceases to amaze me how 'head coaches' get the blame for the failings of players they had no say in bringing in.

It works if you have a good DoF. It fails spectacularly if you don’t. Most foreign coaches are used to working under DoFs and if the top clubs want to attract top continental managers they have to have good DoFs.

Done correctly and in conjunction with a good head of recruitment, it works and, somewhere down the line, personal recommendations will come into it. Not necessarily from a current player but a top level recruiter is likely to have enough contacts to make a few enquiries about a player’s personality and character.

I’ve heard stories of using private detectives to investigate potential signings, even to the point of following players and seeing how they interact with supporters.

If a club isn’t doing this, they’re not doing the job properly.

And if a club isn’t discussing and agreeing their targets with their first team coach/manager, they’re not doing the job properly.

Clubs like Chelsea have just outspent most of their rivals so they’ve been able to win trophies despite being run badly. Same with Man U and Arsenal. They’ve got away with being inefficient simply because they’ve got more income than the majority of their rivals.
