What sanctions were brought against us for the attacks on the Walsall players? I remember thinking at the time, "Oh shit, we're in bother here," but I have no recollection as to what happened to us afterwards.

I have an overriding memory that we got away with it to a certain extent, especially when you consider a similar thing happened with fans attacking opposition players at home to Leicester two years earlier.

It was awful GK had time to go for shit, shave and haircut and still save it, and yes we would have styed up with 3 for a win but hey ho.

Looking at it after, Relegation was probably the best thing to happen.
Would we have had a new owner, Edward's, Morris, would Peter's have kept is job if we had stayed up ?
Plus the 4th Division was one hell of a season, so many memories some that will never be allowed to happen at a football match again.

There are two football lessons to be learned here:

1. Don’t appoint people just because they were big names for England. The majority don’t make good managers.

2. Don’t appoint an Assistant Manager to a Manager’s job. It’s a completely different role requiring a much broader skill set and the majority aren’t up to the job.

It’s a good job we never repeated those mistakes again.

Like Gerrard and Lampard, top players for club and Country and top lads but why do people at the top presume they are going to be good managers! Not sure if it's true but someone once told me that had it been three points for a win that season we'd have stayed up. Of all of the lows at the Lane over the years that Givens penalty sure is the top of my own personal list.

We got the trifecta:

1. Would have stayed up the following year, when 3 points for a win was brought in.
2. Relegated with a positive goal difference.
3. Spent a grand total of 5 minutes of the entire season in the relegation zone. Unfortunately, it was the last 5 minutes.

Anyone who wasn't born that day should let this sink in - In just six years (SIX) we went from finishing a couple of points off a place in Europe, to dropping into the fourth division!

Around 1974 we were riding high and beating some of the best teams in English football, the pigs were bottom of the second division and relegated.

Enjoy these current times we have now because you never know when kick in the teeth is coming. But believe me it will come

I was one of those who ran on the pitch from the kop. I think a pitch invasion happened during the game as well as after the final whistle. I remember cops charging into us on police horses. Also someone launching a kung fu kick at one of their players. Saw lots of grown men in tears that day.

I haven't seen anybody say don't spend money EVER, but I have seen plenty say make sure we are well consolidated and in a secure position first. The whole point of the press clip was about the massive burden of debt for the time, as we slipped down the league.

Coco a lot of our debt came from SS as you know and when we just missed Europe all we could see was glory, so did the directors little did we know how it would spiral mate. I've not seen anyone say we shouldn't spend but the 70's was a time of reckless spending and, it took us years to get out of. I mean 500k nearly wiped us out yet today we'd clear it with a flick of the Mastercard so to speak. I would hate to see United end up like Bury, Bolton or the pigs who came close, I like to think United are careful & not tight.

Built a new stand on JS
Redeveloped the BLLT
Built a new stand in the JS corner
Built a new stand in the Westfield corner

But now we are in the premier league and are financially stable, you and your small minded Sheffielder cohorts are now suggesting it is appropriate to put any further ground redevelopment on hold until we are "well consolidated and in a secure position first", whatever the fucking hell that means. The ground has been upgraded progressively over the years, thankfully so or the ground would look like something out of the Scottish second division and the clowns like you would still be resisting any progress and change to it.

I too was stood on the kop, lower down just to the right of the goal as you look down. I remember being stood on there for what seemed like ages after the game. Seeing grown men I'd known for a good few years in tears was a shock to deal with. For most of that summer I recall thinking we were doomed and would go out of business.

Greenwich Blade I recall we got the smallest of fines as a result of the crowd trouble with a threat of ground closure if any future incidents occurred. As you say, we got off very lightly.

The JS came from Mike McDonald who sold Deane, Fjiortoft and Hutchinson when he wanted money out. Had he not, we would probably have got automatic promotion that season but we should be happy we got a stand instead.

The BLLT just involved removing concrete pillars and was done at the same time as the Westfield, for 2006/07 Premier Leauge football. Had we not spent that money on the ground and bought a decent striker, we may have stayed up. You are making my point for me.

Those plans were drawn up in 2007 for a World Cup bid that failed. Why would anybody want to go ahead with 12 year old plans rather than looking again at what could be done? As I've said several times now, the old Kop rump is outdated and not fit for purpose, so any sensible redevelopment must be of the whole stand rather than some Meccano bolt on.

Definately think we are now, Look how CW built the current team INC players who have now left to get us here, up and till we got promoted to the PL from the mo CW tookover he has spent wisely, not splashed out on journeyman players who were looking for an easy wage for doing ferk all, as some have done in the past. Made sure those players he did bring in would adapt to the system of play he and AK bought in, prob said to each player they wanted to bring in "if tha don't like it don't sign and ferkle off....but there is some peroni and moretti on the table there...."....Not too many did ferkle off, but he got us up on a prepared budgie of what we could spend each season starting in L1...nt done too bad the tow'd lads CW and AK...not bad at all.....1 of our signings cost ferk all and was written of by some of us and other supporters, but what a player and a heart of gold. That 80-81 season is my worse ever supporting United, think I only went to 2 matches all season.

I’d got a job as a paper boy and worked every Saturday late afternoon so could only attend evening matches.
Remember going to the 2-0 night game, when Terry Curran scored both goals....I think, against Huddersfield.
