Garth Crooks

You could be right about a new intolerance for rubbish punditry. As per comments elsewhere on this thread about Benjamin Bloom, there's so much informed stuff out there from amateurs, these days, and so many platforms to publish it on, that you'd hope it would help raise the bar for those who are paid. Pundits shaming other pundits might be one end of this wedge.

I'll leave Robbie to you, though, Copes. Afraid I find him completely unlistenable. Shrill, rude, hectoring, up himself. Which is a shame, as I used to love 606. Haven't been able to stick it for more than 5-10 mins at a time, in the years since he took it over. Happy to accept that this might be my problem, rather than his!
I am amazed at the BBC employing both Savage and Sutton. Both have the most horrible radio voices that I have heard.

Dear old Garth is possibly no more laughably inept than the next ex-pro pundit. It's his pomposity which really gives him the edge. I find it hilarious.

It's an eternal mystery why some of these utterly useless twats get these gigs year after year, for example I couldn't understand why Andy Townsend was always wheeled out for big games on ITV - did anyone actually enjoy listing to him and Clive Tyldesley? But I digress...

It's pretty obvious to me that the heads of TV Sport Departments either have never heard of a Focus Group or can't afford one. Neither can any of them be active on social media.

However, in Garth's case there is another factor. Way back in time he was on a panel with Geoff Hurst when Geoffrey accidentally used an expression that went. shall we say, beyond the pale. These days not only would Sir Geoff be stripped of his knighthood if he said it, he'd probably be stripped of his citizenship.

Anyway, to his credit Garth took it with good humour.

Because of this I believe he's been competely unsackable ever since.

Totally agree.....Garth is a below average pundit but I wouldn’t say he was terrible....he is different.
However in a weird way I quite like watching him because he’s so incredibly pompous. I equate it to watching a comedy sketch.
He’s so lacking in knowledge but his mannerisms and style suggest he thinks he’s a football guru and font of all knowledge.

In fact sometimes Garth speaks in a very similar style to the late Brian Clough.
He was also incredibly arrogant but due to his unbelievable record of success could get away with talking like he was some guru.

The media can’t win. If they go for inoffensive types they are criticised for being bland and if they go for pundits with opinions, people get offended when they have an opinion they don’t agree with.

What we want, BushBlade, if we want pundits at all, is a pundit with an opinion that makes you realise they've added something to your understanding of the game.

Not the we've-played-the-game golfing set whose puerile, mis-informed views would be laughed at in the local, or the contrarian gobshites. Some like Savage and Sutton manage to straddle both categories.

What did he say please?
Yeah I think we have and I still think we're getting our critics, I saw Garth Crooks talking the other day saying we're down and that we're rubbish and he hasn't seen nothing, I haven't got a clue what he took that morning, but he needs to think that we're not ordinary, we play a different way, it's a different style.

We've come with same philosophy that we used in the Championship and I think we need to get respect for that - we haven't changed for no one and we've got a few results. And listen it's going to be a long season, we're gonna have ups and downs, gonna be games where we walk off the pitch where we're just going to have to hold our hands up, but I think, you know, at home were going to give a lot of teams problems and I think we'll see that throughout the season.

Word for word translation.......deserves a like based on effort alone.

Thank you, much appreciated.

As a contemporary of Crooks', I would just like to add that the shit that bloke had to put up with in his playing days was utterly disgusting. The way he dealt with it and addressed it, was nothing short of amazing. People talk about Regis' influence on the game for black players but I assure you Crooks' contribution was greater. If I didn't know all that I do about his past experiences I would also think he was a bit of a prat for his punditry, but I do so I don't.

His earlier experiences don't make up for him being in a 'job' he's totally unsuited for. What next? Diane Abbott to host University Challenge? 🤣

"They lack potency up front"
Is that why we have scored more goals than 8 other Premier League teams so far this season and scored in each of our first 4 games?
Not bad for for a team not long ago in the pub league, coming to terms with the best league in the world.

He did say that we’re professional and stoic though so we’re obviously winning Garth over. 😀

Garth Crooks should pack in punditry and join Corbyn's cabinet. He'd fit in well. Totally incompetent
Totally agree about Crooks, but before throwing comments about politics around, remember there's always a right of reply. Have you noticed that the actual Cabinet aren't exactly covering themselves with glory? ;) UTB!
