With the tragic demise of Bury now expelled from the 92, it is in tribute we should remember the many memories of our frequent visits there
Deane rescuing a point in the last minute.
A 2-1 win when 5000 blades travelled tsmall fishhere.
A truly classic old world football ground with honest down to earth supporters who accepted their role as a small fish in an ever growing environment.
Had some wonderful days out there . Will miss it

The lack of governance by the EFL is the problem almost any wealthy businessman can take controle of clubs.
Things have to be put in place quickly to stop others going same way.Its a tragic situation ! Bury have survived for years on meagre gates of 2,3,4000 ,they were the only club years ago who paid the away team there share of gate money on the spot after the game ,they were run efficiently .the powers that be must be more hands on in future.
The game at lower level is at risk,EFL are you listening the signals are loud and clear.
 
Saw us win at Bury in 1968. Jonh tudor getting a brace. I was behind the goal when Woody smashed a shot over the bar and i put my hand up to stop it and sprained my wrist.
Got to feel for the Shakers when there is so much money at the top end of football. Surely there could have been some club out there to help, or even some rescue plan for when teams get into difficulties. A bad day for football.

If the EFL board had any respect for their own institution, they would resign as well. They clearly failed to implement their own FPP rules in allowing Dale (and Anderson) to take over member clubs.

I think part of the problem is.....if they stop bad owners taking over...then many clubs would go bust as takeovers would never happen.
Many businessmen in football have histories of dodgy dealings.....it comes with the territory.

Also I heard on the radio yesterday that Steve Gibson the Middlesboro owner gave a few ideas to protect football at the directors meeting.
He suggested that the EFL have a neutral accountant that monitors and prepares the annual accounts for EVERY EFL club.
This means that the EFL would be on the inside and have a good idea of club finances at all times.

This idea was rejected by the EFL chairmen. Wonder why?

It’s because some Chairman like Chancer and the Derby Chairman use loop holes to fiddle the rules.
Both have sold their stadiums to themselves and Derby are using a gambling company to pay part of Rooneys wage.
 
Remember the day we had our fans on three sides of the ground. A cracking away day in a decent little town. I always liked going to Bury. To this day it's probably the nicest pie I've ever eaten at a football match and a damn sight better than the shite we serve.

You have to feel for the fans. They'll be back in some form or another.

Do they and Bolton hate each other to any real extent? They'd do well to merge and form a bit of a powerhouse club in a heavily diluted area, being so close to one another. Too many clubs in Greater Manchester/Lancashire.
 
My recent memory of Bury was the 1-3 home defeat the other year.

Was really impressed with the Bury performance. The Leon Clarke goal lobbed over our keeper was class.
But I remember at the time thinking, how the hell can Bury afford to have Leon Clarke and Tom Pope up front?
 
1-1- draw in the 4th Division promotion season. Midweek game, Edwards scored with a header in the last minute from a Jeff King( I think) cross.

Football Special got delayed just before the Totley Tunnel on the way home. Didn't get back home to Woodseats until well after midnight. Seventeen at the time . Not told my parents I was going , left a message on the kitchen table to tell them where I was. Major bollocking when I got in.

Loved telling the story of the game the next day at the 6th Form common room at Newfield
 
Only went to Gigg Lane once 4th Division 81/82 season I think we drew 1-1.
The only thing I can remember about it is getting a leather glove fist in my face from a police officer for complaining about the treatment of our fans at the train station.

Hope Bury can survive and come back up through the leagues it certainly can be done keep the faith Bury Fans.

I always find it very sad when any football league club goes bust, although if Bolton go the same way there is something at the back of my head that keeps remembering when they were in the Premier League and their then Chairman tried to make it a closed shop(Something I would be totally against even if our owners tried to do that now) which might not make me as sympathetic.
 
I remember the battle between Keith Edwards and their striker Craig Madden to be the leading goal scorer. Madden kept catching Edwards up (Madden-ing) but Edwards finished top with 35 goals for us and 1 for Hull. Bury ended up finishing 9th. Madden was one goal behind.

If it is the game I was thinking of, we won 3-0, Lee Williamson, Ched and one other (need to have a think), we were on fire, Ched was on fire, we were about to march back into the Championship......ah well.

Bury were smart enough to know we would buy every ticket they would let us have, so as you say, we got three sides of the ground.

Main thing I remember was a load of younger Blades fans, who decided to spend about 20 minutes doing "the Conga" around the ground, singing something like "the line is getting longer, cos the Blades are doing the Conga, na, na, na, na OOH!, na, na, na, na OOH!", with more youngsters joining on the end of it.

This is a real shame.
 
Always a good away day Gigg Lane I really hope they can keep their ground and work their way back up through the non leagues. What has happened should serve as a warning to other clubs that try to spend more than they have in the pursuit of glory. It's only a matter of time before a percieved big club goes tits up.
 
Sad to see a club like Bury go under especially as a consequence of how the money laundering elite and match fixing establishment have brought it about through greed and excess.
Hopefully this will throw the spotlight on the disgusting excess of the few at the expense of the many. ManCity weekly wage bill could have saved Bury and putting some of the riches into kids footy to get them off the streets would help them grow and develop. But whilst Scoodomore got £8m big ones as a leaving present kids grass roots football lost its £8m funding.

I for one have felt less welcome by the attitude of the club since we got back to PL especially around ticketing allocation. Hope the emergency supporters club meeting with the club in September is to plan how to reconnect with the fans.

On a plus side the stewarding seems better organised and they are moving the early leavers in away from the exits. I also like the blue tabard army of cleaners on the concourse.

I was there for that. Three days after my mum passed away (14 Mar 1989). Needed summat to cheer me up so went to the match. Cold, dark March evening and the noise coming off to our left in the away end was incredible, especially when the winner went in.

It cheered me up somewhat.

Poor Bury. Great club and great little ground. You'd think their rich neighbours would help bail them out, wouldn't you? All that cash sploshing about the two Manchester clubs and they're letting two of the oldest UK clubs go to the fucking wall.

Historically, their biggest rivalry is with each other although in recent seasons they’ve hardly played. They were due to meet next week in the (now not quite so amusing) El Brassico.

The A58 from Bolton is Bury Road and the road from Bury is Bolton Road and changes it’s name halfway. It’s a bizarre coincidence that both clubs could disappear within days of each other.

That’s right, it was televised as I remember. That Bury side had Andy Woodward and Chris Lucketti in defence, with the strike pairing of Laurent D’Jaffo and Adrian Littlejohn!

Saturday afternoon. Bury FC had a policy of supporters having to make two payments to get into the ground.
First to get through the main gates, second was at the turnstile to get into the ground.
We were in a spell of 9 wins out of 10 matches.
 
There’s talk of Bolton and Bury merging, well can you see the arrogant Bolton fans agreeing to that?

The reason they won’t is that they know they’ll get out of trouble, although it’s a pig to get out of, the stadium is still decent and will prove attractive, plus Bolton have been a premiership club which enjoyed a few years up in the top flight.

Contrast that with bury, a handful of fans in an old ground, paying unsustainable wages without a sugar daddy to bankroll it.. could only go one way..

On some level the tribal rivalry between the clubs will prevent it happening, even though it’s a rivalry not on the map so to speak, there’ll be a group who would rather see the respective clubs die than merge and dilute their purity..

The last time I went was January 2012 and we won 3 -0.
I must admit, I was quite surprised to still be able to pay cash on the turnstile and receive no ticket or indication that I'd ever entered the ground.
As we said going in "someone's potentially having a beano on us today"

Ages ago (was it) there was conversations that the premier league was so far away we wouldn’t reach it, and that for a team from Sheffield to ever win the title we’d have to merge and create one huge club, theoretically 80.000 fans in a new ground playing in blue n red stripes. (Just been sick in my mouth)

I know a lot of people who read this will be ready to respond with “not over my dead body” and one response from back then was I’d sooner not have a club than mix with them lot, he was deadly serious..

It’s in our dna..
 
I thought Gigg Lane was a bit of a shithole to be honest. No decent pubs by the ground and a hike to the train (now tram). Sad to see them expelled, but if they can hang onto their ground they'll be back. They are a similar size to Halifax, who reformed and are pretty much the same club as Halifax Town - same stadium, colours and fans etc. Feel bad for their fans but as lon as there is an appetite for football in Bury there will be a football club in the town.

Plenty of pubs around the ground, depends what your definition of decent is. Mine is that it sells alcohol.
 
Been there twice, first time was the lampshade match, second a tuesday night when I believe Jamie Murphy scored his first goal for us, and Jonathan forte scored the second!
