Memries of Leicester

We first met Leicester (Fosse) in 1900 and a couple of times after that before they changed their name to Leicester City in 1919 and we played them under their new guise in 1925. Apart from three uninteresting Cup games, we must go back to 2011 since we had a ‘serious’ meeting in the League. Here are our most recent meetings headed by that classic match on 5th May, 1990 – more of which later.

Full history v Leicester

I won't bother with our most recent meeting, a narrow 0-1 defeat in the FA Cup eighteen months ago. So, let’s start with the 1990 match on 5th May from the incomparable BBC2 series ‘United’. (Special thanks to WalthamstowBlade).



To complete a memorable day which would see the Blades promoted back to the top flight, Wednesday lost at home 0-3 to Nottingham Forest and would be relegated to the third level. An estimated 12,000 fans – many wearing the iconic fluorescent yellow away shirt – travelled to Filbert Street and roared Dave Bassett’s team to a 5-2 win. As a Blades fan, days simply don’t get better than this!

On 18th August, 2009 in The Championship United drew 1-1 at home with a fine equalizer from Keith Treacy:

Boxing Day (26th December, 2009) and a 1-2 defeat at Leicester. Our goal was scored by Henri Camara, a much-travelled Senegalese striker who was nearly 32 years old in this match, but who went on to play for another seven clubs after leaving The Blades!

Bramall Lane on August 6th, 2005 – the opening day of the 2005-06 season which would see the Blades promoted back to the top flight - witnessed a good 4-1 United win over The Foxes. Only 18,224 were in the crowd to see our goals scored by Andy Gray (p), Steve Kabba (p), Paul Ifill and Leigh Bromby:

However, just over three months later in the return match, United lost at Leicester on 26th November, 2005 in The Championship. This time, the score was 2-4 with Steve Kabba and Craig Short scoring for us:

14th September, 2004 and United lost 2-3 away at Leicester. Chris Morgan and Jonathan Forte getting our goals. This was only our second visit to The King Power Stadium (formerly The Walkers Stadium back when we played on this day) which opened on 23rd July, 2002.



On 21st April 2003, United beat Leicester 2-1 at Bramall Lane. Leicester had gone ahead with an opener from…Brian Deane…before Carl Asaba scored a brace. (Deano played 52 games for Leicester and scored a very-respectable 19 goals. The man who took Deano to Leicester? Dave Bassett). This was the season when United lost the play-off final in Cardiff to Wolves. United missed out on automatic promotion to the top flight as Portsmouth were Champions (98 points) and Leicester City were second with 92 points. The Blades trailed far behind in third place (80 points) but the disappointment of a no-show at The Millennium Stadium was still cruel on the Blades fans in the 69,473 crowd. A few weeks earlier, we had lost the FA Cup semi-final against Arsenal at Old Trafford 0-1 and, in January that season, we had lost the Worthington (League) Cup semi-final over two legs to Liverpool. Still, this ‘Triple Assault’ season (2002-03) will live long in the memory of our fans back then.

A 1-3 home defeat on 21st October, 1995 in the second tier with our goal scored by Jostein Flo. Despite finishing this season in ninth place, the Bramall Lane crowd for this fixture was just 13,100.

On the 18th of September, 1971 Match of the Day cameras were present to see a 1-0 United win at Leicester’s old Filbert Street ground. The Blades fans packed into the ‘away end’ (a small shed behind the left-hand goal) had a near front-row seat to see Alan Woodward score directly from a corner, beating Peter Shilton in the Leicester goal. Simply the best United team I’ve ever seen.

Our team that day was: John Hope, Len Badger, Ted Hemsley, John Flynn, Eddie Colquhoun, Trevor Hockey, Alan Woodward, Geoff Salmons, Bill Dearden, Tony Currie, Stewart Scullion. What a team!



We’ve only met five times in the FA Cup – On 27th January 1900 we beat Leicester (Fosse) 1-0 at home in the first round. On January 11th 1930 in the third round we won 2-1 at home, our winner coming from Jimmy Dunne.

January 7th 1950, WW2 had not been over for too long and an entertainment-hungry 41,898 saw United defeat Leicester at Bramall Lane 3-1 in the third round. Our third goal was scored by Harold Brook. (Jimmy Hagan also played in this game).

1961 saw us meet three times in a twice-replayed FA Cup semi-final. The first game at Elland Road on 18th March ended 0-0, as did the first replay at Nottingham Forest’s City Ground on 23rd March. Finally, on 27th March, we lost 0-2 at St. Andrews, Birmingham.

Leicester would lose the final 2-0 to the great, double-winning Tottenham Hotspurs.

It’s over forty years since we last met The Foxes in the FA Cup. On 3rd January, 1976 an abysmal United lost at Leicester in the third round 0-3. Although in the top-flight, United would end this season rock-bottom of the table with just 22 points.

Finally, a game one or two on here may remember. On 22nd November 1952 a very strong Blades team (who would end this season as Champions of the second tier) won the league game at Bramall Lane 7-2. Our scorers included Alf Ringstead (2), Hagan (2) and Furniss. The second Leicester goal was scored by Arthur Rowley – later to be Sheffield United manager 1968-69.

Men to watch: As ever in the PL, quality all over the pitch.
Obviously, Jamie Vardy is ‘the one to watch’ with exactly 100 goals in 239 matches for The Foxes.



Vardy began his professional playing career at the very bottom with Sheffield Wednesday in 2002 at the age of sixteen. When Wednesday released him, Vardy soon found a bigger club and moved to Stocksbridge Park Steels. Spells at FC Halifax Town and Fleetwood followed before – on 17th May 2012 – he moved to Leicester City for a reported £1m. Now he’s an established Premier League player and England international.

James Maddison has greatly improved from a ‘Grealish-twat-a-like’ who signed for The Foxes from Norwich on 20th June 2018 (for a fee believed to be £20m) into one of the Foxes’ most influential players. Since August 2018, he tops the list of ‘Most Chances Created’ in the PL with 105 – ahead of Eden Hazard (98).

Nothing will ever top May 5th 1990 fantastic day fantastic season, then the tannoy said Bournemouth 0-Leeds 1, Luton 3 Derby 2, then Sheffield Wednesday 0 Nottingham Forest 3 the ground erupted. Got back to the Birley saw one grunter all night and to his credit he was a good lad we knew well anyway, my brother was dancing on tables stark naked.

He organised mini bus to Leicester and then lost all his money so we had a whip round for him and collected a right bag of dosh, he woke up we gave it him; silly cunt gave it driver thinking it was his tip never seen such a happy driver.

This was at the fag end of Bassett/Brealey's reign. We were truly dreadful at the time and had lost our first five matches. The awful crowds and atmosphere in the 3-sided ground matched this. We finished ninth because we went on an unbelievable run in the new year when Howard Kendall/Michael McDonald/Charles Green took over, although of course this proved to be a false dawn.

You mean the Walsall game yes it was pandemonium fans attacking their players, Givens missing pen Matthews bottling it all because twat Martin Peters told Kenworthy not to get changed he wasn't playing, if it says he's injured they're lying.

There's been some memorable encounters with Lestah over the years, i recall the November 1969 0-1 home defeat, their fans at the back of the kop, Woodys goal direct from a corner at Filbert street, and the 4-0 win last game of the season with the famous Birchenall/Currie kiss which the National Front got its knickers in a twist over.

My first Boxing Day match was in 1970. Blades 2 (Nish og, Woodward) Leicester 1 (Farrington). I was stood in the BLLT. Dont remember Nish's own goal but our second goal was a piece of quick thinking. We were awarded a free kick at Kop End. As Woody was about to take it, a firework exploded in the Kop but the quick thinking Woody bended the free kick round the wall and into the net. Peter Shilton never moved (probably stunned by the firework explosion and losing his concentration). In the programme for the next home game it said that they were unable to take a photo of the goal because Woody was "too quick" for the photographers

I went to that game and I’m convinced Jimmy Johnstone played while being completely pissed.

That was my first unaccompanied away game aged 15. I remember little of the game itself but afterwards I was accosted by a group of urchins straight from the pages of Oliver Twist (except for the flares) who took my scarf off me. I really liked that scarf too, it was made of a sort of flannelette material and the stripes were vertical rather than horizontal. The first of many beautiful away-days following the Blades!

I missed the match as I had got back to my boarding school after the Easter holidays. I wasnt aware of the photo until Monday after the 4-0 win when quite a lot of pupils at my school were telling me "Your hero is a homo!". I couldnt understand what they were on about until one of them brought a newspaper to show me the photo.

It's alright mate got me dates mixed up happens a lot, yes the Leicester game was naughty as well think we needed to win summat like 14-0 or summat daft, it's easy to get confused even if you were there.

The fences were already up for the Walsall game but it didn't stop the pitch invasion. Two Walsall players and referee were assaulted and mounted police cleared the pitch. I saw a Black Maria have its window put through on Bramall Lane afterwards. There were several pitch invasions during the game with Leicester as well as at the end.

Sheffield United 2 - Leicester 0 in 2004. Gillespie sent off for Leicester, then signed for us not long after.

Really only memorable as it was my oldest son's first game.

2-0 to us in March 1996 I think - Martin O'Neill in charge of Leicester. It won't mean much to most Blades but I lived in Leicester back in those days and it left deep scars. Crowd were calling for O'Neill's head but he recovered to be really successful there. Every time somebody congratulated him or complimented him in interviews he used to say - 'Yeah well I haven't forgotten how it was when we lost 2-0 at home to Sheffield United a while back'. Always used to make me smile.
