South stand debt!!
We built the south stand in the early 70s and got relegated straight after culminating in us landing in the 4th division 1980, due to the fact we had a debt on the stand 650000 K.
That was a desperate time and the repercussions of that have been with us to this present day really.
We lost our talisman TC when he had signed a big contract tying him to the lane for 5 years,relegation took care of that and we slipped away dramatically.
In a similar but smaller way we lost Jags on the back of relegation.
Coming back to the present we have just spent 5 million on the ground and nobody bats an eye lid how inflation and the premier league have changed everything.
A carefull way forward is still essential as many clubs end up in desperate trouble if not using there money wisely.
Luckily we have a massive blade as manager he has the future of the club 1st and
would not risk the future.
We have to keep him at all costs ! I'm sure the owners whoever they're going to be
will feel the same way.
What an amazing position Wilder living the dream and making a fantastic job of it.

Saw on look "weeds" earlier a lot of the work done at lane while encompassing the fans area, has also covered building 2 new TV studios and a big area to interview in ground after game. I admit it's wrong but that's football in PL sadly plus I remember the South Stand going up and, our subsequent fall from grace shall we say. Lot's don't know but before Harry Haslam arrived in all our history we'd never finished lower than 11th in 2nd Division, that equates to 33rd in all leagues; him and that twat Martin Peters soon put paid to that

Why would we refuse it? They'd just refuse giving us TV money which is far more than £5m.

The Premier League pot of gold comes from the TV companies. The money that we are spending is largely to satisfy the TV companies - so in reality they are paying for it as part of their investment.

We can claim it back through the PL though. We are spending it initially but we can expense it back as such.

We still got 30000 gates in the 3rd division, so the gate money was not such a disaster. It's an age old story put donkeys in a red and white shirt, we'll still pay to support them.

We had to spend the 5 mill to meet the prem league and sky requirements, listening to Steve Bettis interview this morn on RS and I quote "We had to build two TV studios in the stand, one being the primary studio for SKY and the other one for other broadcasters (TV or whatever from his inferal) but if sky one goes faulty and we are on tv for a game then the 2nd one automatically is allocated to Sky....for PL games. Had to have brighter floodlights to show the ground on a whole in (no pun intended) a better light.

I remember an interview in the Sunday Express where Harry Haslam talked about the debt of the stand having an huge impact on the club and its ability to recruit players/ pay its way. Remember, inflation got above 25% in the mid 70s (when I guess the debt was highest) so even paying the interest was a struggle.

He said he'd keep walking past it until it was paid off.

I wonder what the net present value of the debt then would be now? And I wonder when we paid it off ?

As we scraped the bottom of the Barrel for the money , the local Mps made sure the pigs got , large grants , to develop that shithole in 1966 . Even after that , the loveable Seb Coe was looking into the pigs moving into a new Stadium paid for by the Council , and if they had not spunked the money on the Student games may well have succeded ,with this , before Man City and Whu got the idea of a virtually free new ground .

Finners my friend, I understand and agree with most of your post,however, you say a careful way forward, using money wisely and not risking our future by generally not overspending is fine but then you say we must keep Wilder,AT ALL COSTS.! Ever thought of being shadow Chancellor, seems like the labour blueprint to me

My Dad worked on the South Stand and the Hallamshire. I’ve seen his DIY and I wouldn’t say any are safe.

I'm sure that Reg Brealey wanted to redevelop BDTBL but plans were rejected. Running track hotel and shops(?) no need for Don Valley stadium.
Probably going over old ground, already be a thread.

The reality was that we couldn't have picked a worse time to build the south stand as the economic climate went to shit as the cricket pitch was being dug up.
Crazy the money being spent today in the Premier League. We have just spent over £5m to bring the lane up to standard nothing more, imagine how much it would cost to bring the sty up to the same standard the fee they just received for arguably their best striker wouldn't cover it hahahaha.
The thing is with United we have never had any hand outs to improve the lane or help from the council, the fucking Supertram only went to Middlewood so it could serve the pig sty the only thing we get at the lane is more council parking restrictions. We are spending money on our ground to play in the toughest League in the world which through it's global exposure will promote the name of Sheffield world wide and bring millions of pounds to the city and all we get are road works and parking restrictions from the council when we play our first home game.
