Apparently Mechelen bringing the transfer to FIFA, however there must be some kind of clearance to the transfer as he's been in Sheffield since Barnsley two weeks ago..........strange, but a solid goallie by all accounts. One for the future and perhaps not behind Henderson in a few months time....

To add: the club were found guilty but the decision was overturned by the Belgian Arbitration Court for Sports. Sounds like Verrips used the initial judgement as his reason to void his contract as his employers broke the law. His old club argue that his contract still stands because the judgement was overturned.

I think from what I read a few weeks ago when he was first linked, the club was accused of match fixing but he sort of refuted it and said he would stand by the club (because they were innocent), but then they weren't innocent so he used his power he apparently has to terminate his contract.

I imagine it'll be something like bringing him into disrepute, a pretty strange thing to have in a contract but for our lawyers to be happy enough to sign him, and the PL to register him, it must be there.

Cheers Roy.

Proost Panchero! (Dutch for Cheers Panchero)

You can't beat a bit of couch warming until you're settled in 🤣

A bit of a character then. Keeping up the bonkers tradition for a number 1. Excellent for applying some real pressure on Henderson by the sound of things.
He's only 22 so ripe for standing in the tradition of great keepers at the lane. :)

Ok its a little confusing. The Belgium FA overturned their original decision and cleared them of match fixing. However the UEFA Ethics and Disciplinary committee stillfound them guilty and banned them from Europa. I think this is what has allowed him to leave.

“Bad news for Henderson when Verrips comes!”

Had me in stiches that, only because I like a good bit of innuendo - poor henderson at the same,

Worst case scenario is we pay a relatively small compensation fee for him. Sounds a promising player though.

Hopefully will be our number 1 for years to come once Deano goes back next seasom

For those of us who've not read other threads, could anyone fill in the blanks? (the salty comments, match fixing, etc)

Verrips responds to fuss: "Most serious crime in sports"

Michael Verrips has explained about his rigorous step to unilaterally terminate his contract with KV Mechelen. The goalkeeper saw no other way out.
KV Mechelen was not amused to say the least about the behavior of Verrips, who grabbed his things early this week and did not show up with the Belgian PhD student anymore. The 22-year-old goalkeeper was accused of unlawful breach of contract.

That is precisely what Verrips has done, although he sees enough basis for unilaterally dissolving his commitment. "And now I have also broken my contract based on the outcome in the" Clean Hands "case, the goalkeeper announced via a press release.

The conviction for match fixing by KV Mechelen is the reason for the rigorous step of Verrips. "So now it is a legal truth that KV Mechelen and some of its directors have committed the most serious crime in sports: distortion of competition."

A continuation of his adventure Behind the Barracks was therefore in his eyes impossible. "I think this mistake is so serious that it makes further professional cooperation impossible for me: it goes without saying that I am entitled not to want to be affiliated with a club that has been punished for this."

It has not been an easy decision for Verrips to leave KV Mechelen in this way. The goalkeeper now wants to look ahead, with Sheffield United being named as the destination. His transfer-free status offers him opportunities. "Under Belgian law, I am now a player who is free to join any club."

Hope this helps... As for 'his adventure Behind the Barracks', me neither.

Not The Star online then?

It all sounds very Rui Patricio part two. Think Wolves eventually agreed to pay a modest fee

They actually agreed to pay the money they were originally going to pay before the Sporting president blocked the move – around €18m!
