Is anyone else still struggling to believe we only got 600k for cotterill?
After buying a player for 2 million we then sell him a year later for 600k, now if that isnt a massive balls up I dont know what is!!
Clearly Blackwell doesnt rate him but i expected to get more than a quarter of what we paid for him!?

We actually paid less than £1m for him. The silly numbers put out by clubs is only to show we fans how ambitious the clubs are, the rest of the 'fee' is in addons - promotion, international caps etc. Cotts disappointed more often than not. He was a liability with his tracking back, never offered his full back any protection, positioning was all over the place, he could never be selected for away games. He could take a bloody good penalty though. £600k cash money is OK.

£600k is more than a quarter of £2mill

[/pedant]

I totally agree with the sentiment though. I thought the pieman had fucked off.

We didn't pay £2m for him. nowhere near that. I think £600k is about right in the current climate as he's not consistent enough to hold down a regular place in the team. Ward is much better than him and deserves to be in the team on the right.

see what he's done 6 months from now. i reckon they'll be screaming they've been ripped off!

Agree, lets try and see how he fairs in the Swansea team.

£2million Bristol to Wigan,
£1million(?) maybe to United
£600k to Swansea

See the trend? Maybe Sousa can tap into his obvious potential but until i see him performing consistently well for them I can't lambast Blackwell for selling him/not getting the best out of him.

Glad they have released the figure though, i was expecting another 'undisclosed'.

i think we've done well to get the amount we have

....or a very talented player whose skills are with his feet and not with his physique. We never saw the best of him, which sadly says far more about us than him, IMHO.

The Swansea manager talking about Cotterill last week.....

"He's had a slow start, he needed to understand our style and movements and with some players that can take a bit more time," said manager Paulo Sousa.

He's had a slow start = He's been crap since Sheffield United managed to offload him onto us.

I apologise, I just remember the original 2 million figure being given in all the papers and the os at the time so assumed...
I cant agree more though, he was never any good for us and probably wouldnt ever be. However having said that I can see him becoming a huge success at swansea as he will be afforded more to 'gel' and will fit in with their style a lot better.
Yes marsh i was aware that 600k is more than quarter of 2 million.... I am a student but i aint that daft.

He'll be the latest in a long line of world-beaters now he's gone.

How many "world beaters" have we sold in the last, say, ten years?

Jags.

Er, I think that's about it. You have to admit, as lines go it's not particularly long.

he was never any good for us and probably wouldnt ever be.

the second half of both last season and the season before appear to have escaped your notice.

The fact that these two occasions when he was good were also the only two occasions he got a run in the side makes the way we gave up on him even more depressing.

Isn't it the same as what we got of ol legs of wood!

Seems about right to me.

If we're quick to accept that "it wasn't really £2m", how can we be sure it really is £600k??

We definately didn't pay 2 million for him. I remember Blackwell and Steve Bruce haggling over the fee. We ended up paying about a million on the initial fee and the rest would be incentive based.

I think £600,000 is about fair for cotterill. Yes we made a loss, but we cant demand 1 mill+ for a player that never produced on a regular basis. Its a shame because I thought the lad had it in him, there was certainly talent there. He wasnt the same player after we made his move permanent though.

Im just glad we recouped something for him. We should go and buy a left winger now. George Boyd perhaps?

There will be no signing of a winger.

There is no point in signing a winger.

Cotterill was a perfectly good winger. Blackwell did not play him.

Little is a perfectly good winger. Blackwell does not play him.

Treacy was a decent winger. Blackwell sent him back.

Reid might be a decent winger. Blackwell does not pick him.

Richard Cresswell is not a winger. Blackwell is going to play him on the wing.

Jamie Ward is not a winger. Blackwell is going to play him on the wing.

That's just the way it is.

1. Cotterill was potentially a good winger who had plenty of opportunities to hold down a first team place; he couldn't defend to save his life and was a wimp on 50/50 challenges.

2. Little is indeed a perfectly good winger but we need someone on the left.

3. Agreed Treacy was a good player, but always injured.

4. Reid might well be - youre right he doesnt get a chance.

5. Cresswell is a striker yes, we can agree on that as well.

6. Jamie Ward most certainly is a winger and a very good one so I dont know how you can say that. Hes also a good striker but better on the wing for me. Our best player by a mile.

We are united its not often we buy a player in and sell him for more than we paid. We didn't even make a profit on Beattie that says it all really.

We can sell some of our more home grown talent for a profit though atleast.

Fair enough but Ward is better on the wing, better than anyone on there.

Love this post its completely spot on.

The only plus is Ward does seem alright on wing.

never paid anything like 2 mill, and i reckon we got a lot more than he is worth.

I just can't see how this is good business.

I'd imagine him being a high earner so fits in with our 're-profiling'

I will always criticise Blacko when necessary. In this case I don't. Cotterill was nothing special at all. Reid has shown nothing to justify any fuss at all in his admittedly brief appearances.

Ward is a far better right side midfielder (I deliberately avoid the term 'winger') than either of them.

Cotterill will not prosper at Swansea. He'll be in and out of the team and then be moved on. Occasionally he'll get a decent cross in and very occasionally he'll get a goal. On these rare occasions someone will tell us what a mistake we made in letting him go.

Like Armstrong, Stead, Alan Quinn and many others before him his stock (now there's a player!) will rise exponentially. Bring back Nade and Shelton!

bloody hell pinchy. i agree with you on this one!!

What he said. Cotterill is one of those players who is world class when he's sat on a bench, and very ordinary when he's on a football pitch. He may have brief flashes of brilliance, but they are few and far between. Still, it won't stop people claiming he was the best winger ever to play for us, and Blackwell should be shot for getting rid, despite Cotterill often getting shouted at for not making forward runs very often, which is surely an essential part of a winger's game. Coupled with a total unwillingness to track back and do any tackling, we won't miss him.

I was rather shocked myself, but Pinchy has got it bang on. Cotterill should never have been signed following his dire performance away at Southampton on the last day of the season in 2008. When he was signed I thought that he should be given a chance as he's a permanent signing, but despite plenty of chances, either starting or as a substitute he never looked like fulfilling his potential. And Blackwell must have had some faith in to start with - he signed him, and he also made Cotterill the penalty taker when Beattie left. Selling him is simply a manager's way of saying "I got it wrong, let's get rid sooner rather than later and try somebody else there".

Because the fee has been stated as £600k, whereas when we signed him it was "undisclosed" so everyone was just guessing.
I think at the time Blackwell admitted the fee was "around the million mark".
