So, just seen a post on another thread about MNF's Neville and Carragher spaffing (sic) about our over lapping CB's on MNF.

What's everyone's thoughts on our tactics next season? Surely we can't emulate the last few years, surely the Prem have this sussed with the increase in quality sides we'll be facing?

Hope WilderKnill have something equally as magic up their sleeves.

Why would increased quality of opposition players mean they have already Sussed out something teams just relegated and teams with premier league quality players couldn't? To be honest I think at least first half of the season, teams will be caught out by our unusual tactics, they may very well get the measure of us by the second half of the season, but just maybe wilder/knill will have tweaked it enough to keep the other teams off balance enough to get points or at least give a good account.

I thought the same about Leicester. It seemed obvious to me that they wanted the opposition to attack them, so they could counter, which they were excellent at. But they were crap in possession, what little they had. So I’d have expected clubs to sit back a bit and draw them on before opening them up.

But no, even towards the end of the season teams were still going at them and still getting caught on the counter.

Our opponents will only have a few days to prepare for playing against us, there’s not that much you can work on in that time.

Hopefully we’ll surprise a few.

I think we will be far more conservative away from home, similarly to how we played at Leeds. At home I think there will be little change. If we are to stay up it’s at the Lane where we need to rattle up the points

I'm assuming W/K will be hoping to use the 3-4-1-2, with JO'C and Bash bombing on and supplementing/overloading as we have seen used last season.

However the PL game is fundamentally different. In the Championship, if we lost the ball we could tussle and win it back in midfield, or close off any counter to allow our CB and WB on that side to reorganise. In the PL, the fitness, physical agility and accuracy of passing will mean that if we attack down a flank and it is thwarted, the ball will be up by our 18 yard box within ten or twelve seconds, possibly less. PL strikers will waste no time in punishing this with clinical accuracy, even before Jack or Bash has even the time to cover 70 yards to get back into the zone and mark out and challenge. You can't expect the likes of Fleck or Norwood as covering DM to do what Bash of Jack does in the box. Also, our chances of executing attacks with the likes of Dids or Billy will be greatly limited. They won't have the time on the ball or the space in the box against their defences. Again, I'll be surprised if Billy makes double figures and Dids five. To stay up we need Billy to hit between 15 and 20 and the second scorer to go over double figures. PL defences are pretty mean and pretty experienced and have played a multitude of formations at all levels - sometimes internationally.

It is going to be tough unless we match like for like - so us jizzing ourselves empty over signing a QPR midfielder is possibly a bit bleedin' previous.

Really? Better not bother next season then.

In reality the Prem sides outside the the top six or seven are vastly overrated... as can be seen with what happened to the sides who came down to the Championship last season.

All eleven players on the goal line for 90 minutes.

That way we don’t have to worry about pace or skill.

Disappointing. I thought this thread was going to be an alternative to the one about vaping being banned by the Premier League,
Fuck the Premier League. We’re Sheffield United and we’ll vape where we want.

I think this will also work in the Prem but we will have to be selective as to when we use it.

The interesting thing for me are the links with pacey players. Wingers in particular. I think Wilder realises that we can’t necessarily impose our slow, methodical, over-loading game on some of these teams. We will need to supplement that approach with pace as well.

Southampton's top scorer got 7 last season. Watford's got 10

Chelsea didn't have 2 players in double figures

Only 11 players got to double figures last season from the bottom half teams. Sharp won't score 15 and he doesn't need to

If football was as binary as you suggest here, then nobody would bother with it. You pool “PL Strikers” into a single unstoppable force whom shit bullets into top bins at 100% accuracy. The reality is far more unpredictable my man.

Fine. Most of our goals last season came from the front two. The other teams you cite all had goals from other areas of the pitch.

Where's ours coming from? Norwood? Fleck? Duffy? The wingbacks?

We need a prolific, PL standard goalscorer. And we need to spend to get him. Let's not fuck about with semantics now. Last time up we bought one palpably ready PL striker and lost him within the season, and were left looking round as to where the goals were coming from to keep us up. Lessons from the past are there to be learned from.

Tell that to Man City and Liverpool.

"Let's not fuck about with semantics now". ??

I don't see any "fucking about with semantics" in my post, just stating some facts to back up my argument that Billy doesn't need to score 15 goals next season.

I'm sure everyone agrees that we need to sign a striker or strikers that can score a few.

Who do you think you are arguing with on that score?

The semantics are in your statement 'Billy doesn't need to score 15 goals next season'. Our top scorer does, however, because there wont be five or six other players on five, six, eight, ten goals. The semantics are 'how many goals we score'. Hulse was our top scorer in our last PL venture - our next highest scorers were Jags and Nade on half of that.

I'd say that's not fucking about with semantics. It's fact. Stating our current top striker doesn't need to hit the net in a league very much on another level to ensure our survival is fucking about with semantics.
