If we are after Mikel and it’s not just agent talk that would be outstanding. I assume it might be the former, but we are clearly going to be looking for reinforcements now Coutts has gone so we’ll see.

He needed that move to Boro to prove he could still do it in England, I think there’ll be lots of interest now.

That mean Lundstrum going then because they both are defensive midfielders

Ones a champions league winner and has played at world cups, the other has had a handful of championship starts and not necessarily impressed but then again he isn’t a defensive midfielder really.

Lundstram will be staying.

Mikel was by far the best Boro player when we played them at home this season. I wouldn't be too averse to this, if wages were reasonable. Him or Fer would both be good options to have.

I don’t want to stifle enthusiasm but, just like the Northern Echo’s Assombalonga report, there is nothing in the substance of the story to justify the headlines!

Just the job for Tufty then. All the variations ‘do his head in’...

Can imagine it does, especially the amount of games he’s given Norwood behind the front two and Duffy slipping into the back 3 to set the ball rolling

If we're looking to sign Mikel now then I think that means we've already accepted we won't be able to afford Phillips.

For a season where we need to focus on staying up I thing Mikel would be my preferred option.

For the cost, I might agree.

I just wonder whether Mikel is still fit enough to be a serious player at PL level.

I think I'd prefer Leroy Fer, if his injury situation isn't anything to worry about.

Usually dead against this type of signing but he was brilliant against us last season and I think he could definitely step up.

Didn't see Middlesbrough play enough to have an opinion. Not a very exciting one but our priorities this upcoming season are a lot different to the last 3 under Wilder. I trust he'll know what we need.

Think we are going to need a physically dominant midfielder in the mould of a Fer or a JOM to provide a different option.

He'll join whoever offers the most money. I'd prefer us to look elsewhere.

If he was all about the money, he would have probabaly stayed in China. I've heard multiple people cite him as a model pro, so I wouldn't write him off personally.

Not every player over 30 who has played at the top level is a waster with a bad attitude.

Just saying.

Finally somebody has said it. People on here often roll out the tried and tested phrases “on his way down” or “here for a last payday” but I think we’ll need some established, experienced premier league talent and ability to complement our current squad. Talent, experience, determination and a good attitude are not mutually exclusive.
