This would be a disaster for true football and it's fans. A slow death for the beautiful game which we would want no part of. There would be a breakaway league in the UK...on the plus side we might have a chance by then of winning a 'Premier League' minus Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool et al.

The premier league fat cat bosses won't let it happen. They're not going to allow their top earners just swan off into the sunset & take all their income away. Maintaining the status quo will be their only concern as clubs in the lower leagues struggle to pay their staff.

To a certain extent, it's already happened, no-one (bigger clubs) care about the domestic cups anymore until they get to the final, Liverpool and Tottenham will have played over 1/3rd the number of League games in a season by the time the Champs League final comes around, the Europa League is just as bad, starting weeks before the domestic season.

Aside from the title, the Champions League is the be all and end all at the moment and it's only a matter of time before we have an actual European League IMO, it's where the money is and as we all know, that's the mian driver in all of this.

I don't think we'll see a breakaway "Super League", they'll more than likely just expand the Champions League with a possibility of expanding it further out than just Europe.

How about making it an 'actual' Champions League that would dampen the enthusiasm :)

To state the obvious, the so-called big six are by and large in that position because of being in the upper reaches of the prem for so long. The higher you finish the more money you get. In the end the gap is pretty much insurmountable. Leicester's title was a welcome exception, but wasn't sustainable.

With that in mind, if the top clubs do break away it's going to be important to be in the top tier of the English league when it happens. That way we've a chance of becoming one of the fatter cats ourselves, albeit probably in a less wealthy league.

I reckon it would be a more enjoyable league due to being more competitive, like the Championship is now.

I think there’s already plans to move Champ’s Lge fixtures to the weekend and play the Prem games midweek - terrible for the fans who attend games and especially for fans of lower level Prem teams like ourselves.
Could be a sign of things to come and may be the first step towards a breakaway league.
However, the Premier League are a very powerful organisation and I expect they’ll fight tooth and nail to save their “product/brand”.
Looks like there could be a power struggle between League and Clubs similar to the one between that’s developed between Club and Player.
We’ll soon find out where the power lies.

This has been inevitable for a while, I can see the current status quo lasting another five years at tops.

The Italian, German, Spanish and French leagues are already a dead duck the winners are known before the season kicks off.

The EPL is going the same way with Man City’s wealth.

What happens to the rest of us when the top six swan off remains unclear, I think a form of two or thee tier European League is possible long term but would almost certainly have places awarded on a “franchise” basis,

if there were one or two places for a “Yorkshire” franchise who would get them?

I think we all know the answer to that.

Paranoid nonsense.

It'll never happen.

It’s a lower standard having only champions from the previous season.
In the old format sometimes the UEFA Cup final was as strong as the European Cup final.

The whole point of the current format is to have the best teams in Europe competing in it.

It better happen quick then!

Yeah, Tottenham and Liverpool :)
The whole (original) point was having the Champions playing off against each other. It may (is) the case that this would lower the standard but this is exactly my point, we've moved into a European League to all intents and purposes already. The only difference is that they lower themselves to compete against the likes of us for parts of the season.

Which made it a great competition. The knockout format also made it more interesting. The Cup Winners cup was also relevant too and had some of the more obscure teams in it. The whole European thing was far better under the old formats, they were genuine competitions that had real credibility and consequently created interest. Nowadays, some teams really aren't bothered about the Europa league and many of the champions league fixtures are irrelevant, played in front of disinterested lowly crowds. If you want the same old same old every year like the EPL fine, but if you want genuine competition, excitement and variety, the old formats win hands down.

It already has, and it has for years. There has been little competition for the league title in over two decades.

In 12 seasons between 1993 and 2004 Manchester United and Arsenal dominated, winning it 8 times and 3 times respectively. The only team to break into that were Blackburn who, in 1995 were actually the big spenders so it wasn't a major surprise. Man Utd and Arsenal were usually runners up if they didn't win it.

Then Abramovic's money took over as Arsenal fell away. In the next seven seasons Chelsea won it 3 times and Manchester United 4 times. Again, if either of those didn't win the league they were usually runners up.

Now we have Manchester City's rise and this could be their fourth title in 8 seasons. Manchester United (once) and Chelsea (twice) have broken that up. For now Liverpool are the main contenders. This is the first year in the last five that there's even been any doubt about who might win the league going into the final month of the season - and that includes the season Leicester won it.

There's currently just as big a points gap between first and fourth in England as there is, say, in Spain.

It will never happen.

Even less likely than our leagues and the Scottish leagues amalgamating.

Yeh i’ll give you that, the old formats were quite random at times, making it weaker but more interesting.
Although the luck of the draw played a big part.

I suppose that many of the big clubs want a European Super league and the present format is a step very close to that.
However you have to feel sorry for European giants AC Milan and Inter who, even with the easier qualification, still seem to struggle to participate in the current Champions league.

No, I don't feel sorry for them at all. Maybe if they hadn't been so greedy in supporting this, they may stand more chance in knockout games rather than the mini league format which is crap and geared around money, not competition.

The biggest problem with a European Super League is who exactly would be in it, and how would the be chosen?

Going on UEFA club coefficient tables, if you has an 18 team league, a third of them would be English, four Spanish, three Italian and two from Germany. France, Portugal and Ukraine would have one team each to make up the numbers.
I doubt many of the other "European Giants" would be reyt keen on that set up...
There are too many "big clubs" for it to work out.

As usual the power will lie where the money lies.

The real fans would be against a European Super League if it seriously affected our domestic competitions. There was talk of a reduced Prem League a few yaers ago, presumably to allow a winter break and/or more European fixtures for the elite few. We have to protect the structure we have got with its promotion and relegation. Our Prem grounds are full and the EFL has benefitted too from a stronger and very close Championship and Div 1.

Will never happen. The big 6 english clubs will threaten to break away & the EPL will cave in & give them a bigger slice of the TV rights. That will be the end of the "collective bargaining" that has been the EPLs success for so long.

Clubs will then have to sell their own rights.

Don’t think that will happen either. The big 6 wouldn’t dare break away, would be a road to ruin for them.

Also the big 6 currently receive a bigger slice then everyone else but the difference isn’t massive like it is in the other countries.
This ensures that the English league remains the most competitive in the world and also remains the most popular.

Of course the landscape might change in 10 years time
But I’m certain any super league will be done on a kind of trial basis to test the waters.
It will run alongside the domestic leagues.

We need wage and spend caps to make things fair. FFP is NOT enough.

Totally agree and I posted on this many moons ago. The most worrying thing is that money doesn’t flow through the leagues and the League 1 and League 2 clubs will be like non league clubs in the future if this continues. The financial gap is widening all the time and this applies to the gap between Championship and Premiership as well.

We are moving towards a situation where the same small group of clubs will go up and down between the top two divisions each season because they are the only ones financially capable of doing so.

This is why I’ve strongly argued that we absolutely must get to the Prem ASAP and taken issue with those fans who think the Championship is ok and there’s no rush. There’s a hell of a rush and thank God we’ve made it.
