I seem to recall we got our retained list out within days of the 2017 bus parade (and before the players headed off to Vegas).

Madine sounded slightly more downbeat than I was expecting. Thanked the players and fans, said the meeting was happening, said he didn’t think he’d played particularly well, and on the meeting said “you never know what will happen”. I thought we’d be keeping him.

I note that the contract sticky thread Foxy had done has disappeared. Coutts and Wright are the only ones of the first team squad whose contracts are up I believe. We will presumably have some announcements of players contracts being paid up too (Holmes?), and any transfer listed players (all the senior players loaned out?).

He did seem downbeat didn’t he. Then again the decision for him to stay won’t be ours. It’ll be Cardiff’s. I’d keep him, think a player of his style will do well in the prem when we need that physicality.

Wilder said last week that he’d be having the chats after the civic reception.

What has worried me is that whilst we certainly need more of a physical threat up front at times, we do seem to change our style when he's in the team, that's maybe not a slight on him particularly, I guess the same would apply to any of his type. When you loook around the Prem, how many teams actually use this type of player anymore ?

Everton seem to do it with DCL at times, Chelski resort to it at times with Giroud but predominately, the 'bang it up to the big man days' are gone at this level.

I think in the Championship I can see your point, but in the Prem I actually think they'll be a greater need for an outlet such as Madine. Someone to come on and hold the ball up in the last twenty minutes, ruffle the defenders and get on the end of things. We can't expect to out pass all the teams in the top flight and I think Madine could really be useful.

I also think Madine would do better if he played alongside a player of genuine pace who can run beyond defenders and work off Madine. Probably the closest to that is Hogan but I'd prefer someone better than Hogan, who I feel needs another season in the Championship playing every week.

True but against certain teams his inclusion (even if coming on as sub)
Will help us win matches, he’s totally different to anything we have, so would be a decent (if underwhelming) signing.

However, of course it depends what other (better) signings we can make
And Wilder always goes on about “value for money”, so would depend on Madine wage demands and transfer fee.
Madine would be a good back up player, so we shouldn’t be paying out large amount for just a squad player.

He is under contract at Cardiff and them being in championship will maybe want to keep him,he also cost a pretty penny so that could also be a stumbling block.
Wilder looks for value for money so we will have a price we are willing to pay that's if
Wilder feels he can do a job.

We need a striker in the prem who will have the same sort of impact Hulse had for us last time (without the broken leg this time...). This will be the biggest recruitment challenge of the off-season.

I tend to agree with this, but every team needs a plan B. We didn't really need Hanson, but he was our plan B in the JTW.

The end result is we got promotion WITH the help of Hogan and Madine and it helped confuse other managers in the run up to the game as to who would start in our front three.

It's quite noticeable that very little, if anything at all leaks out about our starting line ups these days.

We will need a plan B for next season even if it isn't Madine.

I don't care who you are, the big target man / outlet centre forward is a useful squad member. Perfect example of where having one in the side worked was when Leicester won the league. Vardy was the main man there but they also had Ulloa who was superb that season.

I think Madine has been a good addition for United this season & can be utilized as a plan B in the premier league, but the question is, are there better available & are they value for money?

We need to move the club on and there are going to be some disappointed players.

Staying in the Prem for more than one season may hinge on making the tough choices now.

We need to make room for QUALITY to come in.

Sadly, some out, some new in.

We are definitely going to need a good plan B in the Prem, (and probably a C and D as well...) and a target man to look for the flick-ons etc.....for me Madine would be about 5th or 6th choice in that type of player, he's not brilliant in the air for a big lad and goes down far too easily, he's also not that good on the deck....there's a reason why he came on loan to us from Cardiff, a team that naturally play to his type of game anyway.

Jutkiewitz, McBurbie, Charlie Austin, Mitrovic (on loan granted) and Jay Rodriguez, (although I can't stand him) would all be preferable...

I don't think he's saying that, to be fair, I agree with him though, that Madine hasn't been good enough at that level so we should look for better quality at the next.

Madine is a Cardiff player - and it may all change if NW decides to or is told to go from Cardiff.

He cost them £6m from Bolton in the JTW and apparently £35K per week. Cardiff are not going to give him away, which is sort of what we would want.

Surely at those figures, even with our SKY money next season, they are bonkers figures for a plan B player.

From the photos I was being sent in the early hours I don't see contract negotiations being too high on CW's list today

Cardiff will probably want him back for the championship,they deemed him not good enough for the prem ,and as harsh as it sounds neither should we

We're where we are by playing a variety of ways on different occasions.

The way we played against WBA and Leeds away is completely different to how we played against Ipswich or Reading at home.
