Looks like he nearly walked away from the club after the last game of last season at Bristol City

Said he was in tears after the game

"This time last season, when I walked off the pitch at Bristol City, I was in tears because I thought that was me done here. Obviously there were things that weren't right."

We did, or at least had a very very strong suspicion that he was close to walking. After all he said in his interview at the time that 'things had to change' but it wasn't clear whether it was a proper ultimatum to the owners or him just firing a warning shot.

To hear him lay it bare yesterday didn't half strike a chord with me, and reminded me that success can flip at any moment if everyone at the club is not pulling in the same direction.

Agreed. I mean if things hadn't been sorted like what they were, the co-owners could've still not resolved their differences and got all litigious & the whole shitshow could've ended up in the High Court 12 months later, with the quite serious risk of the HRH grabbing control at a crucial time in our history. Oh..... :rolleyes:

Having gone on to achieve what we have this season, and the manner we have done it, I'm glad that all the concerns that CW had on the 6th May were addressed rapidly and to everyone's satisfaction by the 22nd May, when CW, AK, Darren Ward, Matt Prestridge and Paul Mitchell had all agreed new improved deals. :)
 
Whilst walking away from Bristol city’s ground having seen wilder in tears. I was certain that he was gonna chuck the towel in. I’m just so glad our co owners gave him reassurance and he stayed.
What a season⚔️⚔️. It’s only just starting to sink in that we’re gonna be hosting spurs etc at BDTBL next season⚔️⚔️⚔️. UTB
 
I suspect he's now on a lot more british team's radars after this season. He's certainly gone up a tier in reputation. I suspect he'll be linked with a couple of jobs close season, and then, when we have a strong start to next, he'll be linked with established prem teams.
 



The two aren’t mutually exclusive, he clearly wanted a new contract and the reassurance from the owners.

I guess he forced their hand and got what he needed to do his job.

Well I remember we were all singing “we want you to stay” so it was a fear we had at Bristol.
 
It was about budget, not salary.

Fans' 'noise' was deafening and put immense pressure on the owners. :rolleyes:

Same issue is right there again now, with bigger numbers. Oh and there ought to be another big set of pay rises too.

'Linked' as in some lazy hack filling space in the media? CW ain't going anywhere soon. He's got things that money can't buy - kids settled at school, wife happy, loved by all at United and he's been around football long enough to know that there are far worse owners out there. It's his dream job and he's built an affinity with the fans which won't be replicated anywhere else.

If he'd gone to lesser clubs like Sunderland or West Brom, the first sign of a bad run and the fans would be calling for his head. Won't happen here, whatever we do next season.

At the moment, he's proved that he can turn around a club on it's arse financially and wake up a sleeping giant and get them back to the Prem on less money than should have been required. Brilliant achievements though they are (and not to mention the fantastic football), he isn't going to get a job in the Prem until he's proved himself in that arena. Obviously he has time on his side on that front and a lot will depend on this season but I don't think Prem clubs will be after him just yet, more likely the Stokes, Swanseas, WBAs etc
 
I didn't think it was serious at the time tbh. Bit like when you know your girlfriend isn't happy with you, but then you think nah it'll be reyt and she'll not find anyone better than me! Oh, how ignorant I was - re United that is!
 
............except it DIDN'T happen.

All was resolved in the end. CW made a dramatic appeal to the powers that was at Northampton - that was resolved as well, it's just the way he is - emotional, honest, up front.

Think some of you should move on and look to the future as against the past.

How would you feel if we were five points adrift at the bottom at Christmas?

I'm sure the vast majority of fans would want to stick with CW with the expectation that it would come good. But would a foreign owner like HRH feel the same loyalty? I doubt it.

and there's the problem in a nutshell, Premiership status is everything to a foreign owner (OK, most of them) and some of them wouldn't think twice about sacking him and bringing, say, Allardyce in at Xmas if we were 5 points adrift.
 
That last game, down in Bristol, when he walked over to the fans after the final whistle, it really did look like he was waving goodbye, it wasn't his usual chest-thumping style. I was really worried he was leaving.

Thank god he didn't!
 



He went to Sunderland as he had a big fall out, when Dufffy was sold in the JTW to pay for the second installment on the Desso.

It's a well known fact on here and surprised more don't mention it.

If only he'd stayed. What might have been.....
