When there's a disconnect between club and fans

Reading this thread, emphasises to me just what a fantastic time it is for us Blades. Not just the promotion, but the fact that the players and manager are all seen as being 'one of us'.
I've not posted this to have a dig at West Ham. They are a club who on one level have had a decent season and played some good football with a big fan base. But many supporters just don't feel a part of it anymore. Moving away from Upton Park to a bigger stadium which supporters don't think of as 'home' doesn't help.
I did feel a little sad yesterday that a season we will probably remember as our best ever has come to an end. I just hope, whoever ends up taking over us, we don't become another club that forgets its history and fans for the 'greater good'.

I find the history part interesting, surely all clubs evolve and continue to create new history?

As long as we play in Sheffield wearing red and white stripes, what can any owner do to destroy the history? It will always be there, you can’t wipe people’s memories or destroy the history books.

United are doing a lot of things right. But no one can stop the shift in attitudes as an anarchic set of fans is replaced with a more conservative generation who frown on you standing up, swearing or celebrating to excess.

As long as we play in Sheffield wearing red and white stripes, what can any owner do to destroy the history? It will always be there, you can’t wipe people’s memories or destroy the history books.

I guess it's like 'Trigger' s broom' in Only Fools And Horses. At what point does it become a different broom!

Everything we've achieved has beeen through our own efforts. The reason West Ham 'play some good football' is because they can afford to spend big, having had their ground practically given to them.

If their fans 'don't feel part of it any more', diddums. They could stay at home watching a box set of Alf Garnett. If it wasn't for Trevor Brooking they wouldn't be making the numbers up in the PL.

That needs putting up on the boardroom wall as a warning to any new owner or the winner if they stay on.

Agree the Difference with West Ham is the owners actively moved away from their history for commercial reasons and treated the loyal fan base terribly.

I’d argue McCabe has made plenty of catastrophic mistake and errors of judgement ( particularly managers and budget choices) but it’s always been in service of the right end goal.

I am glad you think of me, as I approach by 72nd birthday, as one of a new generation of fans. I disapprove of people standing up all the time (when it ignores the needs of others), of swearing (if it is aggressive and/or constant), and of celebrating to excess ('excess' surely implies disapproval). I can still support my team noisily, tunelessly, and would still bring my rattle to the Lane (see avatar) if it was allowed.

It’s not just the history though, it’s the routine. It’s the walk to the Lane, the walk you’ve done for twenty, thirty years, the pubs and/or the takeaways you’ve used for years, seeing the same faces in the same places - people you don’t know but you’ve seen them so often you feel like you know them.
The Lane is nothing like it was when I first went but when I go, it’s like I’m in the same ground I was when I was a kid, watching Edwards and Morris.

That’s what people hate losing, that connection with their childhood, their growing up, their whole life.

This is true. Stratford is soulless - you have to walk through a shopping centre to get in. Awful place.
