There was no trouble off the pitch that I saw. The trouble was on the pitch, whenever the ball came anywhere near our clueless defenders. That said, we nearly won 6-5.

At full time most of the Swindon fans on the pitch decided to come and goad the United fans rather than celebrate their success - from memory there were barely any stewards or preparation for that kind of thing to happen, so it was a bit hostile.

Needless to say I took great pleasure in watching them get smoked 4-0 by Preston in the final and still a small amount of enjoyment at them disappearing to league two in the same season we got promoted.

God damn we've come a long way.

The small mercy was that the power PNE showed in that final would have flattened our defence too. Saved us a few hundred quid each.

it was another let down but we did have hope that season. The season after was my all time low as a Blade even though we’d had worse positions. Adkins had ripped away every bit of hope and enjoyment out of me by that final home game.

The really depressing thing about that game wasn't that we failed in another play-off campaign, it was that we scored five goals and proved that however garbage some of our team was that if we'd attacked teams for more than the last hour of our season then we might have done a lot better.

I used to go on and on about it under Clough that on so many occasions we were happy to be playing out the game. Other teams we played were more than happy with it too. Pass the ball side to side, keep it nice and tight, hope you somehow nick one but act like a draw would be absolutely fine.

I'm so glad that Wilder has been proven right that just by virtue of trying to win every game you end up miles better off.

We were pelted with coins and all sorts after the game. Sitting ducks in the stand where the stewards basically penned us in whilst they ran amock on the pitch.

But the die was cast in the first leg - a 1-2 home loss on 7/5/15 - when referee Darren Bond ignored an outrageous handball as Swindon defended the the Bramall Lane end.

The highs would not be as high if not for the lows. We suffered so much misery...but the current situation is only amplified by knowing what we went through to get here..

Spare a thought for Swindon and their fans - 3 points from their last 5 games and sitting mid-table in League Two. I have a special memory of one particular sour-faced Swindon fan who had a pop at me and my lad who were reflecting on the game as we walked along Bramall Lane. I game him the customary finger gesture and thought then that I might one day be looking back at that incident with a big smile on my face.
