I felt really sad when I heard Kevin Beattie had died. We had a saying at work for years that started when a bloke and I were talking about the play offs and another bloke popped his head around the door and said, "Kevin Beatties back!". This was about twenty years after he had retired. Any time football got mentioned after that the conversation always included "Kevin Beatties back!" at some point. You probably had to be there.

Thanks for the good wishes, obviously hope we win tomorrow and win the league, stopping Norwich on the way but genuinely respect Ipswich. As I posted earlier you are not a 'little' club at all, I grew up watching you win in Europe and thought you were unlucky not to win the title at least once in that Liverpool dominated era. Good luck next season and hope to meet you in the cup again, love the away end view at your place and the ground generally.

Piece of trivia for you. The only time that the champions would have changed under the two points for a win rule (if it were 3 points for a win) was 74/75 and we would have pipped Derby. Unfortunately now I’m old the years go so quick and as someone previously mentioned it’s a few years back now but it seems like yesterday.

Nice to see the picture of our managers with John Cobbold. For those who don’t know John Cobbold was our amazing alcoholic homosexual owner for many a year. He was a complete nut case. To give you an idea of the man we were playing away to Leicester once and losing 3 - 0. John Cobbold was sitting next to Bobby Robson and said “I say Bobby, I don’t know what you have done to the team from last week but we look amazing”, Bobby turned to Cobbold and said “John, you don’t realise but today we are playing in White”.

Back to Beattie - he regularly followed us on away days in the back of someone’s car. He could never understand why fans wanted to speak with him, he never considered himself anything other than an ordinary bloke. He was so hard up that he auctioned his FA Cup winners medal but someone bought it and gave it back to him - he probably sold it again on the quiet.



Anyhoo, sorry to blab on but I’m a sucker for the old days when things were simple but exciting. In Bobby Robson’s 13 years at Ipswich he signed 13 players. Mick McCarthy signed over 70 while with us. In 81 when Villa stole the title off us we used 14 players and some of them played over 60 games that season.

I’ve done it again - I was about to finish but waffled on again.

Yes. He stood in the middle but swayed to the left or right and then dived the opposite way, it was quite amazing how many he saved. Many of our fans think he was great and he was a good keeper but he was the only non international in the team and as good as he was he was a weak link. We botched signing Pat Jennings from Spurs over a misunderstanding with a £25k payment in the deal and Robson later could have bought Shilton but wouldn’t pay the money they Forest eventually paid. If we had either of those we would have won the league at least three times in those years. Shilton incidentally is now shagging my mates ex wife.

That 74/75 season when you were up there was a bit mad, I don’t remember it well because I was a bit young but I just checked it and there were 8 points separating the top 10. I’m pretty sure from memory that Middlesbrough were on top for some time - although the memory plays tricks.

We suffered from it for years and it was a relief when they jumped off the wagon, our best atmosphere of late is on cold nights when no bugger turns up.

Talking about your Div 4 thing. I remember after we were relegated in 86 coming back from Sheffield Wednesday ( actually we weren’t technically relegated that day but we were to be) and we stopped off in Nottingham on the way back. It was all a bit surreal, there were a few Forest fans in a pub who had just come back from an away day and one of them was walking round the pub showing strangers a shit that he had had in a carrier bag. There was also a Wolves fan in there crying in his beer as they had just been relegated to the fourth division.
