Just thought I'd post this on here for those who aren't on twitter to try and get as much coverage as possible. Great to see the club taking an initiative on this sort of thing and hopefully some help can be done.

Poor lad that's awful hope he gets a match. Is he mixed race? If so that will explain why its so hard for him to find a match, its a well known problem with transplants, particularly bone marrow.

I believe he's of Turkish extraction, but there's also a lack of Middle Eastern/Asian donors.

If you're of the same race a match is much more likely, but I don't think a match is totally dependent on it. It's basically like blood type but more complicated from what I've just read.

Race/gender/ethnicity doesn't feature much. It is 'blood type', not so much 'group'.

And sadly, it's the amount of people on the donor database which has the greater effect on the lack of donors.

I know this because my own daughter had AML and had a Stem Cell Transplant (which was in the end unsuccessful as she went into relapse and died, aged 27)

So get yourselves on the donor database, why don't you?

Intend doing it depending on crowds queues etc. I'm concerned that there will be so many trying to give samples thy won't cope. Surely we can give a sample elsewhere at a time of our choosing?

A local lad, who went to school with mine has been recently diagnosed with leukaemia. He is only 18 .
He was a keen sportsman, especially cricket and ice hockey, and a regular at the Lane. He needs a blood transfusion from someone matching his specific stem cell type.
This same condition also affects thousands of others, who can be treated and potentially cured, so long as they can be matched up with someone matching them.
If you're a match, it is a blood donation solution.
SUFC have teamed up with DKMS, who are going to be doing mouth swabs at the Lane on Saturday, to check for matches with people who desperately need these transfusions. They'll be in the Family Zone, John Street.
It is featured in the matchday program too.
So, while we are hopefully celebrating our future, let's also try do our bit for those who have been hit with this bombshell.

Similar questions coming from a few people. It does make a match more difficult for him. But remember there are also thousands of others in the UK in the same boat as him. It jumps home, when it's a local lad who some of us know, but we can still help others who are desperate for that help.

Worth checking that there aren't age limits. I read about this lad in the Star last week (he sounds a top youngster, incidentally), and from what it said there, I am way too old to be a donor. But do check - I am also way too old to remember what I read.

Assuming you were a match, I thought they extracted the stem cells from donated blood (?).
I've been a blood donor for more years than I care to remember, but I'm over 40, so wouldn't qualify as a suitable stem cell donor.

Today's Star reports that 145 fans had swabs taken before the Ipswich game, and results are being analysed to see if a match can be found. Others have said they will be volunteering. The family are delighted with the response, and the lad himself (who was going through a bad patch) had his spirits lifted by Utd's promotion. So well done to all involved, and a special mention for a number of Ipswich fans who took the trouble to volunteer, and to some Wednesday fans who did the same. The football family at its best.
