Would a Blades player, playing for Sheffield United resort to this? Have I been abused every time I pay to watch the Blades lose?

A youth football club has been ordered to pay £3,000 compensation to the family of a 10-year-old player after his father said subbing him was 'emotional abuse' and 'racism'.

The father took Berkshire-based Winnersh Rangers to a county court after his son's coach took the boy off the pitch during a pre-season football tournament in summer 2018.

The club which is funded by donations says it will struggle to cover the cost of the damages and will try to have the ruling overturned.

A manager said insisted that the substitution are 'just part of the game' and the boy was taken off to 'give everyone a fair chance and even playing time'.

Shameful story, and all too true of junior football in this country.

Parents should be told right at the outset how it works. Managing expectations. Essentially, watch, keep stchum, cheer, applaud, encourage, but that’s where it stops. Anything else SHOULD have consequences.

I imagine there's a good chance the club could fold if the fine is upheld. Who does that benefit? The organisers probably feel like jacking it in anyway if that's the thanks they get for giving up their time.

It's more abusive getting kids to turn up for a match and leaving them as a sub and not giving them a run out, cause you think it's the world cup and not an under 11s fun league

Very likely that's the case, but not really the thing they're hoping takes the headline. I just get annoyed by the sensationalism that wants to make it sound like all that you can just go around suing people for subbing your kid. There's obviously a lot more to it than that.

In my experience, junior football does strange things to player's parents - far more than any other activity I've seen. What causes it - the potential fame & fortune for the elite few who make the grade, football being such a competitive game or parents remembering their junior football days and thinking they know best? Who knows but after finishing coaching at Junior Premier League level and the top end of grass roots football earlier this year after 5 years, having had to placate numerous parents and having decisions questioned despite trying to manage expectations at the outset of each season, holding regular parents' meetings and providing regular updates on the team's and individuals' progress via comms, I can honestly say I am not missing it one iota.
