Does anyone know if any of Baldock, Stevens or Freeman have ever played up top? the reason I ask is they all have pace and know where the goal is!

I think Dowell is a very skilful player, he just doesn’t impose himself on the game for long enough. I think he needs to get a bit more aggression in his game, but he’s a quality player. But a bit of a luxury player.

McGoldrick gets through a lot more work and has good skills too, Just not clinical or selfish enough.

There’s summat wrong with all of em! But collectively they’re brilliant!

Agree particularly if Billy is out for the season. More than happy to have Madine and Hogan starting with Duffy in behind them. It worked very well against Reading at Home.

Spot on Gav, don’t rate Dowell one jot! and also Norwood doesn’t impress me, little pointless 5 yard passes, not what we need, I hope he provers me wrong Friday... Let’s go for it!

As someone who used to play as a fullback, and had pace, and could shoot, as soon as I went up top I couldn’t find any space, running towards the ball, completely lost. I know I’m not a professional footballer and I don’t profess to be anywhere near good enough to have ever been one, I just don’t think those positions are interchangeable. Although the required physical attributes are similar, the mental game is so so different

For me, it would be Hogan and McGoldrick with Madine off the bench. Duffy in just behind with Dowell interchangeable for the Duffmeister and Didzy. I would have Coutts Lundstram Moore Freeman Washington Eyup al on the bench.

Aye! Typical full back talking! Listen to me sonny, I was a proper winger in the Alvin Woodyard mould.

Full back is a job for owd men. My cousin told me that. He was a striker. (Worked for British Leyland).

When you’re a winger you like nothing better than to have wide open green grass in front of you. I was taught, “if there’s a space in front of you, run into it, and fast!” There’s nothing more satisfying for a winger than running at great pace with the ball at feet and seeeing full backs retreating in terror. Afraid to commit themselves in case a little Elvis-like swivel of the hips sends them the wrong way. Because once I’m past them they can never catch up. They’re beaten!

And then you’re into the box and the goalkeeper doesn’t know whether to come out and narrow the angle or stay there and poop his pants as I advance at great speed and with menace towards his goal.

Now (And this where I differed from David McGoldrick), I am beating down on goal, the goalkeeper is in three minds what to do, what am I thinking? I’m NOT thinking who can I pass it to! I’m thinking only of the moment the ball leaves the faux leather of my Timpson shooting star, side lace up, George Best copy, boots. I hear the soft “clut” sound as I strike it beautifully with my laces, toe pointed down, back arched slightly, to give it sufficient lift to take it over the dithering goalkeepers outstretched hands, and into the roof of the net, as he flails and snatches at meagre wafers of fresh air. The sound of the ball rippling around the riggin! The ecstasy of the crowd.

When you’re a natural born winger mate, all this is food and drink. All in a days work.

But tackling? Nay lad! That’s for full backs!

I’ve seen that occasionally too but overall I’d disagree. Having seen the likes of Edwards and Deane and other prolific strikers, there’s an arrogance and selfishness about them that he doesn’t have. I really like him, don’t get me wrong, but he often looks for a pass when he’d be far better off having a pop himself.

Agreed. I'm not sure Mcgoldrick and Madine are natural strike partners though. Both offer something different but are better build up players than they are goal scorers. Hogan has to start in place of Sharp for me along with Mcgoldrick and one of: Madine or Duffy..

I’d be tempted to go with Madine and Hogan up top - saw it once against Reading and we scored 4, so cant be that bad. I’d give McG the “free-role” with the option of Duffy off the bench if needed.

I've gone for Johnson on the bench, mainly as he could drop in at LWB and we move Stevens to LCB, if required - not convinced by Bryan, but he could replace Stearman if required...I'd also prefer to keep McGoldrick up front, rather than drop him back in to midfield.

Nailed it mate.

We haven't seen Madine spark up a partnership with McG yet, but definitely with Hogan. Didzy looked much better than Duffy dropping deeper against Millwall.

Madine/Hogan combined well against Reading and with Forest having nothing to play for they have no reason to shut up shop so there could be holes for Hogan to exploit.

Reading were atrocious so I’d not mark that game down to our strikers’ forming an unstoppable partnership.

I think the decision for Friday depends on whether Wilder wants us to go longer earlier, or save Madine as an option. My guess is he starts.
