Unless we spend money, we'll be losing:

Bunn
Treacy
Harper
Cresswell

Killa wants away.

We have injuries to:

Monty (back next month)
Williamson
Ward (should have been back last night?)
Naysmith (a season is a long time to be out at his age)

We are seriously lacking in firepower.

So... exactly how many players do we need to buy in January and who?

I think we need a whole new backbone to the team... goalkeeper, central defender, central midfielder (or two) and a new man up front. It ain't gonna be cheap, but are we going to do it?

The priority shud be a new QUALITY manager.

With out that yer just wastin money.

Didn't the official site confirm that a deal for Cresswell had been done, and isn't Harper is on a free if we sign him?

Bunn I personally wouldn't sign although a deal for Treacy might be worth making but only if the price is right. I wouldn't pay over a million for him.

If that's the case, then some money has already been spent. Cresswell I think would be a good player to fit into a new-look side, but I'm not so sure about Harper.

We still need more players though.

In what position? (serious question)

Harper and Cresswell will be here for the season, add Davies to your list of losses.

Maybe Reid will get his chance if we don't do anything about Treacy bit I reckon McSheffrey will come in after Xmas.

I think he'll be reasonably happy with Hendo, Evans, Ward and Cresswell, as you say, Monty and Williamson will be back, Taylor and / or Naysmith but after last night we don't know how long Kyle will be out.

CB and keeper will be priority I reckon, maybe Wood who has been close to signing a few times by all accounts although we won't be offereing the money we have been !

I hear that the Killa exit is sealed, just deciding whether Newcastle or Wigan. The replacement I'm reliably informed will be Wood from the snortbeasts! With Fortune that will be the centre-back options, Davis loan maybe extended.

We need, what we have been needing for bloody ages, a decent central midfielder - that is vital - there is simply no cohesion in our midfield - stephen quinn isnt good enough for centre of the park, he disappears for large parts of the game - and whilst harper does have some class, his legs have gone. im confident in our full back and winger situation - i dont see why cotterill and treacey play those postions every week - they were excellent in the last 15 of the match last night. we have good defensive midfielders with monty and williamson - were crying out for some creativity (someone of the gudjohnson, whelan, stock mould)
We obviously know killa is going - wood, in my opinion would be a bad signing - he lacks in pace - which is a massive issue - seeing has morgan isnt the quickest - davies needs to go back as he looks shakey almost every game and cant seem to click with morgan.
i think bennett will keep his place - but we should look to improve in the area - as i cant see paddy coming back to us after his ban.
a striker would be a good idea too - ched has had alot of game time now - and still doesnt look the best, fitness and ability wise. we desperately need ward back - hendo will do a job for now - time will tell on camara - i think 1 more with the 5 we have would be a good addition.

so all in all - we need 4 - possibly 5 players - if we sign some quality - it will probably cost us about 3-4 mill - which we dont have! up the blades!

this doesn't fit in with:

- us not having any money to spend
- the Pigs not selling their best players cheaply
- Strafford's desire for good PR at all costs. Wood to the Lane is bad PR, particularly if we are still below them by then.

Well I seem to be watching different games to everyone else but I think Harper should be snapped up permanently as he is a class above IMHO. He actually uses the ball and gives himself time and space. I would agree he is nowhere near his reading form but it does take time to settle.

I've also been impressed by Davies, the Wednesday first half aside but everyone seems to be slating him.

I wouldn't think Cresswell or Davies would cost much as Stoke want rid.

I'd like to see Harper, Davies, and Cresswell brought in on deals which I can't see costing more than £1.5 Million in transfer fees. I'd also like to see us get a decent young keeper to challenge with Paddy when he comes back.

I also think the deal for Wood is in the bag. He's wanted to come to United for a while as he wants out of Wednesday but doesn't want to uproot his family.

Got to say I'm loving the Sun's story that Newcastle are planning a £4 Million raid for Killa. How much do I wish that story is true. If we get half that we'd of done well.

I agree, sort of. Bit after an age of having poor midfielders, is it just me that wonders if the players we bring through are consistently as poor as they seem? It would be statistically impossible, I believe.

It's our style of play and the options provided by the players that surround the midfielders. Historicaly there are none (options) other than a hopeful punt towards the box. The last few games have been an improvement but it can't happen overnight.

That said, I'm with you on Quinn. Not the worst player by a long way, but no significant strengths to counter his significant weaknesses (strength, stature, pace).

Harper I think is a player we need to bring in long term. Last night he looked the best midfielder on the park. Whenever I looked at him he was running into space and wanting the ball and I think this is what helped us look so good with passing and movement last night.

I think Nolan looked a bit better :-)

I agree about Harper though, he hasn't got the legs and seems to run out of steam after 60-70 minutes but always wanted the ball and always tried to link defence to attack. As ever (and a problem Tongy had), the issue is having enough movement around him and options to pass to.

I was actually not too impressed with Nolan. Yeah he got the ball and moved it around well but I was expecting more from him. I thought he would be one of those players that when you see gets the ball you start to worry.

I do think Harper was our best player last night, he never tried anything stupid and kept it simple when it was needed.
