This. Wilder gave it fifteen minutes with McGoldrick up front and five at the back and could see a change was needed. But to have the courage to sacrifice a defender for a striker with ten men on the pitch and Brentford pushing us hard is a different level.
 
Said to my young un it was a brave call when Billy was waiting to come on but also the right call as I don't think we would have seen the game out with just Didzy on. He was playing lb at one point which was crazy as we had absolutely no out ball.
Great work by Wilder. He earned his money tonight.
 
We could and probably should have gone 4-3-2 as soon as Madine got sent off.
McGoldrick on for Dowell and Basham into midfield.
Warnock always kept 2 forwards on against 10 men and usually got good results from it.
Credit to CW for getting it right in the end though.
 
I couldn’t get tonight due to work commitments. My mate was keeping me up to date on the score. He described wilder as having balls of steel for making those substitutions when madine got sent off.
I can’t help but agree!!!. Wilder is a bloody genius for his game management tonight.

I love Wilder as much as the next man but if we’re honest, he only eventually had a stroke of “genius” and got it right after 3 previous attempts.

First we tried 4-4-1 with Basham on the right wing in front of Baldock.
That didn’t work, so we reverted back to the usual shape but with Hogan still isolated up front (3-5-1)
After half time, it was Basham into midfield again and McGoldrick alone up front (still 3-5-1)
Finally after brilliantly soaking up tons of pressure, he put Sharp on and went 4-3-2, which finally eased the pressure and we started to create chances again.

As I said above, he could have just gone 4-3-2 straight away with one simple tactical change. McGoldrick on for Dowell and Basham into midfield.
He did this eventually and it worked well but it’s not quite the revolutionary tactic that some are suggesting.

Agreed, FLN or Bozo would have pulled all strikers off packed the defence and lost 3-1

I stand corrected but was only getting scores by text so can’t comment with any authority on tonight’s formations. UTB
 
Not bonkers, just incredibly brave.

Putting two strikers on, using up your subs early, that can easily backfire and see us lose by a distance. Wilder's got the bravery to go for a win in a game where we needed it. No one would've blamed him for putting extra defenders on and holding on to what we had, maybe getting a 1-1. He's good enough to do make the right decision and not the easy one.

Absolutely superb management and I'm glad the players rewarded him with some outstanding individual performances and an even better team one.

You could also look at this as him responding quickly to Brentford changing their shape. It wasn't working only to the extent that we never lost the lead anyway.
 
Brilliant performance, from the players and from Wilder and Knill.

So pleased with and for them. Shit conditions, a fairly dangerous (but nullified) team and ten lions.

Fucking Madine. Head full of fucking cement.

Just got home from the lane now and it definitely wasn’t a comfortable watch even tho we was 1-0 up - definitely not a breeze but look at the outcome after he made the subs - great result and great to see the lads getting the fans pumped after the whistle tonight !
 
Credit to Wilder for putting Sharp on up top and taking off Baldock, but come on. It was the obvious thing to do as the equaliser was coming otherwise. It was a matter of time only, as no defence can keep it out for 95 mins if you are under that sort of constant pressure.

We needed an out ball pure and simple, and the ball wasn't sticking with Goldie up top. It was do or die time, but even a no nothing like me was screaming for Wilder to put Sharp on to help get us up the pitch and alleviate some of the pressure off our back line. In fact, I'd have put Sharp on at half time just because he works his arse off in those situations, whereas Goldie (though he is a clever player) is more of a link play man and has never been a player to hold up the ball. Was baffled by that decision at half time to be honest, but credit to Chris for adapting quickly when he saw what was happening.
 
Substitutions are not always Tuffty's strong point but tonight it was pure genius
 
I wouldn't call it incredibly brave, it was clever more than anything, and it made sense.

I didn't want us to move Basham to midfield so early but I agreed with this change. Something needed to be done - it was too easy for them.

We had the out ball, they couldn't play out from the back as easily and our midfield's job was made easier. They didn't have to cover as much 'vertical' space if that's the right term. They could focus fully on protecting the defence and covering the wide areas. The defence remained solid too, having a CB at RB played it's part in that - with Basham helping a lot.
 
Dunno if anyone else noticed Hendo looked to be struggling at one point after we'd used our 3 subs. I began to wonder who on here had sevely fucked off the footballing God's. Thankfully it was just being winded and not a pull.

I think it was more like play acting and time wasting.
 
Got the starting 11 wrong IMO however got the final 10 bob on!Inspirational subs, once again Cranie outstanding .

Cranie's a diamond. He was just a name to me, when he signed. Made sense to get a defensive body in, and expected half decent, given Wilder. He's hardly put a foot wrong. And fitted pretty seemlessly into his role.. His assist at West Brom, and his defensive play tonight..No more words required :)
