Having a debate on United Facebook page, about an incident in March 1978 V Luton at Bramall Lane,

Simon Stainrod rounded the keeper and rolled the ball towards the net from the edge of the area and turned round to celebrate his hat trick but it got stuck in the mud and was cleared by the defenders.

I am confident it was at the Kop end, but others maintain it was at BL end.

It was over 40 years ago and I am now in my early 60s so the chances of my memory being shit are high.

Anyone have a definitive answer, or has it happened at both ends.

We beat Luton 4-1 so fortunately it didn’t matter.

Yes, BL End. Woody scored the 4th goal with a header at the Kop End. We were 4 up but late in the game Cliff Calvert chased after a Luton striker who was running the ball, managed to flick the ball off him, but it flew over from 25 yards over the helpless Jim Brown for a spectacular own goal!

As others have said it was definitely the Lane end.

Saw the Hanover one on the tele this morning and said straight away to my misses that I remember Simon Stainrod having one stick in a puddle just like that.

There's an old thread called Open Goal Misses at Bramall Lane and Cerberus Blade in post #34 agrees with you that this was at the Kop end, unfortunately I concur with everyone else on here and say this was definitely at the Lane end. I cannot find any video of this "goal" anywhere to confirm this. Can anyone else find any footage?
And while I'm on anyone complaining about the cost of the Desso should look at the not too distant past to see what poor conditions professional football was played on in the country. Derby stands out as a particularly bad sludge heap.

Wow that really happened. I'd always imagined it was another of my brother's lies/exaggerations - few years before I got taken to the match.

That was my first ever match. My only memory of it was the heavy rain.

I thought it was Kop end - I remember it well. At least, I thought I did! But it seems I may be wrong!

According to reports on our 10-0 away win at (Burslem) Port Vale in 1893 (which remains the record League away win), the scoreline was partly due to "the Port Vale keeper losing his spectacles in the mud!".

How times change.
You're right!. It's still just as muddy at Port Vale, but their keeper wears contact lenses now!;)

.

Luton match wasn't televised

Defo at the lane end. It was pouring with rain. It was in the first half and if it had gone in it would have been Stainrods hat trick. I seem to recall that Some one (a sponsor) or other was offering something like a grand (Maybe more maybe less) for any player in the league to score a hat trick in one half. So he missed out on that too.

I was there that day, and would put money on BL end.

Remember Stan turning away when celebration after he hit it, instead of following it in and making sure.

Happy days.

I think we tend to forget with the ubiquitous coverage of football these days that in the dim and distant past only certain matches were covered. Never mind, I've still got it in my head.
Our 3-0 home defeat against Luton in January 1977 (Steve McKee played - England manager Don Revie was in the directors box watching the match)) was on MOTD (before the match the tv cameras filmed Woody receiving an award- I think it was for breaking Doc Pace's post war scoring record ). The 1-1 home draw against Luton in Sept 1978 was televised by YTV

In the same game, Stainrod got in the way of a John Flynn header, blcking it on the line.
