Which ex Blade's mum won the Nobel peace prize?

Paul Williams. Striker signed by Bassett in 87/88 season.

Considering his robust approach, he must have been more like his dad
Correct! Yes, he was one of the biggest thugs we ever had, I don't think he will ever trouble the Nobel prize committee when choosing their next winner!

Didn't he once have a sandwich shop on Chapel Walk too?

I remember him thumping someone at home and I seem to remember it echoing in the ground!

I quite liked him as he got stuck in, especially as earlier that season we had the presence of Philiskirk and future itk Cadette

For that season we probably had the dirtiest team I have known. It was either Wally Downes or Paul Williams who got sent off for a tackle so bad that even the United fans booed him off.

Think that was Downes against Bradford City. He had a ongoing feud with Mick Kennedy so was looking for some revenge. Only problem was that he got the wrong man and got sent off too.

Williams got sent off for punching an Ipswich defender I think. Silent will remember correctly I am sure

Mick Kennedy sadly passed away this last weekend. Have to say he was a bit of a thug though!

Reminds me of the joke I once heard, 'which footballer played for Sheff Utd, Sheff Wed, Newcastle, Everton and Man City and his father was a famous comedian?'

My mate was going, 'I don't know.'
'Imre Varadi',
'Oh yeah of course,' thinks for a minute, 'who was his father then?'
'Ollie'

Not sure how accurate this is, but the way my Dad tells it, Williams brought the ball down well for likely the only time in his life, and promptly got walloped by the Ipswich defender, winning a free kick in a dangerous position. Only the dozy bastard got up and twatted the defender for no readily apparent reason and got sent off! My Dad recalls that fortunately Wally Downes put the free kick straight in, although now that I type it out, it seems unlikely...

LOL, I had to think about that one! :)

The defender was Tony Humes. Williams broke Humes' nose with his elbow as they were lining up waiting for the free kick.

Downes did indeed score direct from the free kick, though it was a fluke. He bent the ball in low and everyone missed it.

Richard Cadette scored twice in the first half, won a 500 pound holiday voucher in the Blades Revival draw at half time, and missed a late penalty, thus missing out on a hattrick. He had quite the day.

Simon Webster headed in a corner for the other goal. We won 4-1, having lost 5-0 at Leeds the week before. We would lose 6-0 at Boro the week after.

Striker wins half time holiday ! Had we got behind with his wages ..? Allegedly. Sure it was all above board.

Did Downes get sent off against Leeds too ? As he had a long term feud with mark aizelwood .. and long term feuds with everyone else...

Although he wouldn't have played against Ipswich then ??? Might have been before fax machines and had to wait for suspension by post ?

Didn't a high profile club employee have to take a pay cut but proceeded to win the Superdraw within the month, more recently than that?

Yes, he went against Leeds as well. He was suspended for the Boro game.

Interesting story that a journalist told me, which I believe to be true but have no proof other than his word. :——-

Ex Blade Paul Williams used to play for Stockport at the same time as another Paul Williams who played left back, the left back had been extensively scouted by West Brom who at the time were managed by Bobby Gould.
Gould made the decision to sign the left back a smaller coloured guy who could not have been more different to the ex blade and told a colleague to sort it out.
Two days later Gould was sat in his office and in walks the colleague with Paul Williams, unfortunately he had signed the wrong one.
Anyone who saw ex Blade Paul Williams would doubt that he was worth the £250k that West Brom apparently paid.

Another interesting story about ex Blade Jon Cullen, but that's for another day.

Much as I love Lord Bassett, has anyone ever asked him why he felt the need to sign two journeymen bit players from Newport County - Darren Carr and Paul Williams? If I ever met Carr or Williams themselves I might ask them that question, and then run away as fast as I can!
