Baseball has been in the Uk since the 19 century so I think the phrase is probably not that new albeit I’m sure someone will report otherwise if I’m wrong

There’s lots of phrases that originated from sports quite a lot of them US sports, you probably use loads and don’t even realise
‘Stepping up to the plate’ is used constantly, often by politicians.
I assume this is also a baseball term. And yes it annoys me hugely.

Fuck it, play three up front and aim to score more than them. 4-3 to us.

There’s lots. Striking out, playing hard ball, covering your bases, big league, ballpark figure, batting 1000, hitting/batting above your average, closer, screwball, grand slam, home run, “it ain’t over until it’s over”, out of left field, on deck, off base, rain check, whole new ballgame and more.

Toe the line might be boxing or running races, ball in their court tennis or basketball, slam dunk basketball, par for the course golf etc etc etc. Plenty from football too. We all probably use them and don’t realise half the time. Even lots of historical and long standing phrases have their roots in various sports or activities.

I’m pretty easy with a lot of it as it is the sort of thing that makes the English language so flexible and fun compared to other languages. That said if people talk completely in these terms as some in business do it makes them sound twats, hence the wankspeak bingo board for office meetings.

Whole Nine Yards -( giving it everything you have )
One theory is it was the length of the ammunition belt feeding the inboard guns on the P51 Mustang fighter of war 2.

CW went with Mandine and Dowell instead of Duffy & McG against Norwich, with Duffs/McG brought on to change the game in the 2nd half (as they did).

Think his could be a goer

The same corporate twats who use the modern terms would have used terms like ‘sticky wicket’ thirty years ago and still sounded like twats. I just deadbat them.

The league position represents who is better than who, that’s why we’re a better team than them, we should let them worry about us and play to our strengths.

Some people think starting Madine and Dowell worked at Norwich but we only drew after they went off and was losing whilst they were on. Let’s play to our strengths which is clearly getting the ball down on the deck and out footballing teams, especially the ones who worse than us like Villa.

Villa is a great ground with character and is a great away day, we should comfortably be selling out for games like this so it should be a good neyt and a cracking atmosphere, I’m really looking forward to it.

Filthy Mings 2nd head stomp and the league should have increased the suspension for a 2nd offence The scumbag helped out the pigs at the same time. Oliveira will be unavailable to play against them.
I hope that ugly incident will spur Reading on to a big performance.

Same again as at Norwich for me. Contain them first half, use Madine as the emergency outlet if we need and then Duffy and McG on at 60 mins. Another big 90 for Billy who could be rested against Boro for Hogan, coming on at 60 in that game.

Decent options these days tha knows

I hope that little cunt Grealish is playing. I think he would rather hit the deck than hurt us with his “obvious talent”

I’d be very surprised if Madine doesn’t start every game where we’re not going to have as much possession as the opponent

Grealish hasn’t played for a while so won’t be match fit. Would have thought he’ll be sub.
Not worried if he starts because surely he’ll be rusty in his first game back.

I'd go with Madine for this one. Same team as against Norwich.

Duffy and Goldie coming on for Dowell and Madine in the 2nd half.
I agree, otherwise we can’t rely on any subs to make a difference if required. Dowell will come good, I’m confident of that.

Shockingly, it looks like Tyrone The Psycho will be able to play. Hopefully Madine fucks him up (on the sly, obviously).

Watch out for the dirty chunt Mings , made a right mess of the reading player , and he has previous of the same offence , he needs banning for this , an outright ban !

The Reading forward was left in a heap on the floor and clutching his face after the incident

Mings was handed a five-game ban for stamping on Zlatan Ibrahimovic back in March 2017

It was a disgraceful stamp. Ibrahimovich is a worthy candidate of such an offense though. Tool. Allegedly.
